Phil Coulson Will Be A Rookie S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent In Captain Marvel

EW’s recent Captain Marvel blowout gave us lots to chew on about the upcoming MCU movie. For one, we learned more about how Nick Fury will fit into the proceedings. As the film’s a prequel set in the 1990s, Samuel L. Jackson will be de-aged in the role via state of the art CGI, playing the part as a lowly desk jockey who’s yet to really get out in the field.

Also returning in Captain Marvel is everyone’s favorite S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Phil Coulson, who hasn’t been seen in the movies since 2012’s The Avengers. Much like Fury, the film will find him in a very different place to where we’re used to seeing him, which is as a high-ranking member of the organization (he was even director for a time on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.).

According to Jackson, here’s what we can expect:

Captain Marvel also includes Fury’s first meeting with Clark Gregg’s rookie agent Phil Coulson — and there are other surprises, too. He has a greater sense of humor in this than anything I’ve done before.”

For both Fury and Coulson, that should allow for a fascinating new interpretation of the characters that should be fun for both audiences and the actors to get to grips with. As Jackson says to EW above, Captain Marvel‘s given him the chance to flex his comedic muscles more than usual as presumably, this younger Fury isn’t as unflappable and kickass as the one we’re familiar with. Coulson’s always an affable guy, though, so it should be interesting to see how Clark Gregg gets to play him differently.

Captain Marvel is part of a full-on comeback for Fury in the MCU, as he just cameo’d in Avengers: Infinity War and will return in Spider-Man: Far From Home, too. As for Coulson, hopefully his role here will lead to more appearances for the fan favorite on the big screen. I mean, one of these days we need to have a scene where the Avengers discover that he didn’t die at the hands of Loki, right?
