Juul’s imitators are copying the popular vape’s high nicotine levels
The popularity of Juul and its high-nicotine pods is driving up nicotine levels across the vaping industry in what Stanford researchers are calling a “nicotine arms race,” according to a new study. The findings back up suspicions that Juul’s competitors are watching the vaping giant closely to capitalize on the largely unregulated multi-billion-dollar e-cigarette market.
Researchers with Stanford Research Into the Impact of Tobacco Advertising investigated the nicotine levels that Juul imitators advertised. They looked at pods compatible with Juul devices or Juul-like knockoffs, as well as e-juice bottles for refillable pods and vapes. Their study, published Wednesday in the journal Tobacco Control and first covered by CNN, reports that...

Warner Bros. is planning an Aquaman horror spin-off set in The Trench
According to a Hollywood Reporter exclusive, Warner Bros. is making plans for a spin-off to its billion-dollar hit Aquaman — in the form of a modestly budgeted horror movie with none of the original main cast involved. The film, set around the underwater kingdom known as The Trench, would be produced by Aquaman’s director, James Wan, and its co-producer, Peter Safran, who has a long production history on horror films like The Conjuring and many of its spin-offs.
Details are limited, but The Hollywood Reporter says Warner Bros. has commissioned a screenplay from Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald, two former employees of J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot production company.
While the immediate description of “an Aquaman movie without Jason Momoa,...

Rep. Devin Nunes repeated a 4chan meme on national television
Last night on Laura Ingraham’s show, The Ingraham Angle, a strange thing happened (stranger than usual, I mean). Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA) stopped by for an interview, ostensibly to talk about Rep. Adam Schiff’s (D-CA) latest actions regarding the ongoing Russia probe. “This is clearly an investigation again, without a crime. We’ve looked for two years — didn’t find anything, at all,” Nunes said, which is misleading at best. He went on to speak about the “cottage industry” of press people who are following the case and reporting it, so the public has an idea of what goes on behind closed doors. Nunes sounded offended when he reported to the Capitol for what was, in his words, a routine meeting, and he saw many camera people waiting for him...

Amazon copies brick-and-mortar stores by launching a new home shopping channel
Amazon is taking another page out of the brick-and-mortar playbook, this time by launching its own shopping channel to promote products on the platform called Amazon Live, as first spotted by TechCrunch. The copying of physical stores’ strategies may be extra stinging to retailers because Amazon controls about half of the United States’ e-commerce market, ahead of more traditional stores like Best Buy, Macy’s, and Walmart.
On the list of companies that Amazon has crushed in market share is QVC Group, which broadcasts its own shows where hosts chat about available products, making it easy for people to watch along and buy. Amazon is now mirroring this approach with live streams available on its site and through a new app called Amazon...

Google is hiring a VP of engineering for wearables, but what does that really mean?
Last night, Android Police caught two new job listings at Google: “Vice President, Hardware Engineering, Wearables” and “Wearables Design Manager, Consumer Hardware.”
Given the sorry state of Wear OS smartwatches, everybody has their fingers crossed that this finally means that Google is getting serious about doing something to improve its smartwatch offering — specifically, by making one itself.
It’s certainly a reasonable conclusion to jump to. There are lots of clues you could put together that seem to add up to Google working on its own hardware for a smartwatch: this job, for one, along with Google’s overall strategy of making its own hardware as touchstone devices that teach the rest of the Android (and Chrome and Google...

Save on Apple’s latest iPad and MacBook Air, DualShock 4 controllers, and more today
The two biggest discounts of the day are both Apple products: the 2018 iPad and MacBook Air. These are notable deals, not just because Apple gear rarely gets a discount worth talking about, but also because what’s on sale is worth buying if you’re in the market. If you’re not, we’ve added a few other deals below that we think are worth checking out.
The latest iPad tablet with 128GB of storage usually retails for $429.99, though it’s now down to $329.99 at Amazon. This beats the cheapest price that we saw during Black Friday 2018 by $20, and is likely the cheapest that we’ll see this tablet run for until its successor releases this year. The Verge’s review of the sixth-gen iPad calls it the best tablet available under $500, and for a...

Senator introduces a bill to legalize marijuana and it’s called S.420
A new bill introduced in the Senate today would legalize weed, and it’s not just the text of the bill that’s a nod to marijuana culture. The bill, introduced by Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR), is labeled with a conspicuous number: S.420.
The new bill would give the Drug Enforcement Administration 60 days to remove the drug from its list of controlled substances, while also barring the sale of marijuana in states where it’s still illegal. S.420 would also require merchants to add an excise tax to marijuana, an indirect tax that’s added to the price of the product, similar to how tobacco and alcohol are taxed.
The bill would also require businesses to register for special permits to start selling weed. Cannabis products would also face labeling...

Play this simple design game to test your UI knowledge
Can’t Unsee is a web-based game that presents two choices of iOS interface designs, and asks the user a simple question: Which one is more correct? There are three rounds that ramp up in difficulty, asking you to pick between two mock-ups presented side by side that start out with design choices that seem obviously wrong, but then escalate to images that are nearly indistinguishable. Created by software engineer Alex Kotliarskyi with product designer Amanda Hum, it’s a game of “spot the differences,” but only one of the choices is the right one.
Of course, what makes something good is subjective, but most of the answers are based on universally accepted design traits like even spacing between text blocks and consistent capitalization....

Let’s all watch the Wisconsin local news desperately try to get answers about Foxconn
No one knows what’s happening with Foxconn’s promised factory in Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin (my hometown!) after conflicting reports surfaced last week that construction was on hold, then not on hold, on hold again, and then maybe back on track after Trump personally called Foxconn CEO Terry Gou. We’ve been tracking the story closely, Bloomberg Businessweek just ran a cover story about it, and there’s a great Reply All episode about it as well. It’s... well, it’s a mess.
But nothing quite captures the insanity like this tremendous report from Terry Sater at WISN 12 in Milwaukee. Here are some things it contains:
- Absolutely no one from Mount Pleasant, Racine, or Foxconn going on the record.
- Mount Pleasant Village President Dave DeGroot...

Child's Play Remake Trailer Arrives, New Chucky Is Ready to Play
from Movie Trailers http://bit.ly/2RJWIzT
Jennifer Tilly’s Not Impressed With The Child’s Play Remake
The upcoming Child’s Play reboot has been the subject of heavy backlash ever since it first announced, with much of the hostility stemming from the fact that franchise creator Don Mancini already had plans to continue in the original continuity of the series with an upcoming TV show.
Mancini himself has already made his objections to the new Child’s Play very clear via social media, and in the wake of the first trailer dropping, actress Jennifer Tilly has taken the opportunity to share her own less-than-ecstatic response. Taking to Twitter, the star posted a photo of herself alongside her murderous alter ego Tiffany Valentine, captioning the image with a blunt dismissal of Lars Klevberg’s reboot:
“New ‘Chucky’ movie? Ummm…no. Tiffany and I are gonna sit this one out. #NotmyChucky”
Based on the comments received by Tilly’s tweet, it looks like a lot of fans are thinking the same thing. In fact, should anyone choose to give the new Child’s Play a miss, they’ll even have a small screen alternative to go to in the form of Mancini’s Chucky TV series on SyFy.
Though Mancini’s show is still in its early stages, it’s already looking pretty likely that the project will see Brad Dourif reprise his role as the killer doll, and given how Cult of Chucky ended, you have to imagine there’s a good chance that Tilly will be back as well.
But while the TV series is the Chucky project with the returning players, it must be said that the Child’s Play reboot has some notable cast members, too, including Aubrey Plaza as the next Karen Barclay and Brian Tyree Henry as Detective Mike Norris. We’ll find out if the new lineup can win over skeptics when the film hits theaters on June 21st, 2019.

Chris Pratt Says He Was Blown Away By The Pitch For Jurassic World 3
Last year’s Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom may not have received the most enthusiastic of responses from fans or critics, but it still did rather well at the box office, with J. A. Bayona’s film currently ranking as the twelfth-biggest global grosser of all time. Suffice to say, the series has more than enough commercial momentum to keep going, and according to Chris Pratt, writer-director Colin Trevorrow has something very special lined up for us in Jurassic World 3.
Speaking to MTV News, the star of 2015’s Jurassic World and its subsequent sequel claims that he’s heard the pitch for the third movie, and it’s sounding “pretty epic.”
“When I heard the pitch, I was blown away. I can’t believe we’re gonna make that movie,” Pratt said. “I can’t believe they found a way to deliver on the promise on the end of Fallen Kingdom. ‘Wait, what? The island is blown up, the animals are out, we can’t put them back in the box. What are we gonna do? How is, not only the dinosaurs, but this technology, moving forward, going to affect the planet?’ And we jump forward and it’s like, ‘Oh, oh right. Oh, damn.’ [Director Colin Trevorrow’s] been working his butt off on it and it’s going to be pretty epic.”
For some viewers, the ending of Fallen Kingdom teased the movie that Bayona’s film should’ve been, as the freed dinosaurs make their way towards civilization. Indeed, Trevorrow has mentioned previously that he regarded the first two World movies as necessary buildup in order to tell the story he’s always wanted to tell with Jurassic World 3, explaining in an interview with Empire last year how Fallen Kingdom laid the foundations for “something that we haven’t seen before.”
Hinting at the vision he has in mind, Trevorrow has told Jurassic Outpost that he’s excited by the idea of a world where a dinosaur “might run out in front of your car on a foggy backroad, or invade your campground looking for food,” adding that he’s bringing us a reality where “where dinosaur interaction is unlikely but possible — the same way we watch out for bears or sharks.” What kind of story Trevorrow wishes to tell in this world remains unclear, but there’ll be plenty of time for further details before Jurassic World 3 hits theaters on June 11th, 2021.

Doctor Sleep Actress Teases The Story Of The Shining Sequel
Though Stephen King’s 2013 novel Doctor Sleep serves as a follow-up to 1977’s The Shining, you can imagine that there are a lot of horror fans out there who are familiar with the story of the latter but not the former. But with a film adaptation of the sequel scheduled for release later this year, actress Emily Alyn Lind has offered a helpful synopsis of the sinister events to come.
As you may be aware, director Stanley Kubrick brought The Shining to the big screen back in 1980 with a movie starring Danny Lloyd as as a psychic young boy named Danny Torrance. For Mike Flanagan’s Doctor Sleep, the role will be filled by Ewan McGregor, and in a recent episode of The Direct Message Network’s Now What?! podcast, Lind teased what’s become of little Danny:
“So, basically, it picks up from when Danny – played by Ewan McGregor – is going down the wrong path, a lot like his dad, who’s played by Jack Nicholson in the original movie. He decides when he is younger, right after the Overlook Hotel has been destroyed, that he is going to turn off his powers,”
Jump a few decades later, and Danny is approached by a young girl with similar abilities, played by Kyliegh Curran:
“This little girl named Abra Stone reaches out to him, and he hasn’t had his powers – his shining – on for twenty something years since he was a little boy. And this little girl Abra Stone reaches out to him somehow and needs his help because she has the most powerful shining out of everyone in the world.”
It’s here that Lind’s character Snakebite Andi comes into the story as a member of a mysterious cult that wishes to feed off Abra’s essence:
“So, she’s reaching out to Danny to try and help her because this cult called the True Knot, which I’m a part of, is trying to capture her because what they do is kill children and eat the shining out of them, and that makes them almost immortal. So they are trying to find her because if they eat her, they will be set for years and years and years and be very healthy. It’s sort of like – the movie is really cool because you have two different storylines going on – you see the whole Aubra-Danny storyline and the True Knot storyline and they’re kind of coming together until the end when they emerge into one.”
Evidently, this isn’t just a rehash of The Shining that we’re getting here, though director Mike Flanagan also told Bloody Disgusting last year that he intended for the movie to at least acknowledge the Kubrick classic.
In any case, Flanagan’s film comes to us in a busy year for King adaptations. Though a lot of horror fans are already feeling pretty pumped for the release of It: Chapter 2 this September, we’ll first be getting the new Pet Sematary in April, which has already earned King’s endorsement. Once those two are out, it’s just a short wait until Doctor Sleep hits theaters on November 8th, 2019.

Warner Bros. Announces Aquaman Spinoff For The Trench
After the billion-dollar box office success of James Wan’s Aquaman, it only figures that Warner Bros. is looking to further flesh out this crazy little corner of the DCEU. Nonetheless, it may come as a surprise to hear that the studio is currently at work on a spinoff project titled The Trench that’s centered on the amphibious creatures of the same name.
THR reports that writers Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald have been hired to pen a “horror-tinged script” focused on the monsters that attacked Arthur Curry and Mera in last year’s release. While details remain vague, it’s said that the project will be set in the kingdom of the Trench, will not feature the main cast of Aquaman, and will be produced by Wan and his regular collaborator Peter Safran. The report doesn’t specify whether this will be a work for the big or small screen, though it does mention that The Trench will be “much more modestly budgeted” than your average DC flick.
Wan has previously gone on record saying that he initially pitched Aquaman as a “horror monster movie,” and while you could argue that the eventual film doesn’t exactly fit this description, a whole spinoff centered on the Trench certainly sounds like it could bridge the gap between Wan’s horror leanings and his more recent blockbuster work.
In any case, as things move forward with the Aquaman spinoff, we can also expect Warner to follow through on their plans for a proper sequel. Last month, it was reported that the studio is keen to get Wan back to direct Aquaman 2 after the phenomenal box office performance of the first movie, and while the Conjuring helmsman is apparently waiting to see a script before he agrees to the gig, his involvement in The Trench at least ensures he’ll be staying in the DCEU’s orbit for some time.
