Samsung to debut AirDrop competitor alongside Galaxy S20, report claims

Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge

Samsung is developing its own alternative to Apple’s AirDrop file sharing service that will launch with the upcoming Galaxy S20, XDA Developers reports. Screenshots of the feature show that it will work similarly to AirDrop, allowing you to “share instantly with people nearby,” so long as their device has Quick Share turned on. You’ll also be able to restrict who can send you files to just people in your contacts, or else leave it wide open so that strangers can send you pictures of space sloths.

Despite how useful AirDrop has been on iOS and macOS since its initial launch in 2011, Android has struggled to come up with a viable competitor. For a while Android included an NFC-based version called Android Beam, but this was discontinued...

Robert Downey Jr. Defends His Blackface Role In Tropic Thunder

Let us travel back in time a bit, back to a period before Uber, The Masked Singer, and other atrocities. In 2008, the very same year that Iron Man would kick off the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Robert Downey Jr. would take to the silver screens with a, uh, slightly more esoteric role as Kirk Lazarus in Tropic Thunder, the massive comedy hit. At the time, not much was made of Robert’s use of blackface. Now, however, it’s coming back to bite him, it seems.

Sitting down with walking HGH factory Joe Rogan on his podcast to promote Dolittle which, weird choice but okay, the host asked Downey Jr. about the role and the actor’s choice to don blackface, and Iron Man had this to say in response:

“I think having a moral psychology is job one. Sometimes, you just gotta go, ‘Yeah I effed up.’ In my defense, Tropic Thunder is about how wrong [blackface] is, so I take exception. My mother was horrified…I thought, ‘Hold on, dude. Get real here. Where is your heart? My heart is, A: I get to be black for a summer in my mind, so there’s something in it for me. The other thing is I get to hold up to nature the insane, self-involved hypocrisy of artists and what they think they’re allowed to do on occasion.”

Topic Thunder

There’s…a lot to unpack there. So, okay, sure, Tropic Thunder was satire, taking aim at all sorts of Hollywood types. The hubris of a white man thinking he could play a black man better than an actual black person is indeed insane. As the film was written by three white guys though (Ben Stiller, Justin Theroux, Etan Cohen), maybe they could have found some other way to comment on race without being, you know, kind of racist?

Also, what the heck are you talking about, Robert? You get to be “black for a summer?” Uh no, you do not. That’s bizarre. The “something that was in it for you” was like, millions of dollars and a job in a movie. That last line, too, seems like a lot. Almost like a cop-out. Can you really comment on something while doing said something yourself? Who knows? I’m no expert, just a “journalist” living paycheck to paycheck. Lordy, lordy, what a guy.

Anyways, Tropic Thunder can currently be found on many a white guy’s bookshelf in between TRON: Legacy and True Lies, believe me.

Tons Of Great Horror Movies Are Headed To Shudder Next Month

With a raft of new streaming services coming our way this year, it’s impressive that Shudder continues to develop compelling content and a solid horror library to keep fans returning. Having already snapped up the rights to Rob Zombie’s 3 From Hell, they’ve now announced their full lineup of titles for February 2020, which includes new original series, shorts, and a lot of classic movies.

In terms of original series, Shudder have The Dead Lands on Thursdays through March 5th, with the show adapting a 2014 New Zealand film focusing on Māori mythology. The plot covers a warrior returning from the afterlife who has to contend with the spirits of the recently dead. Given Shudder’s confirmation of a second season for Creepshow, it’ll be fascinating to see what they do with this material as they increase their original series commitments.

On the original movies front, Shudder have Bliss, where a painter struggles with a creative block. In addition, they have the imaginatively titled Dogs Don’t Wear Pants, wherein an emotionally paralyzed man begins a relationship with a dominatrix centered around suffocation. Shudder also have Jessica Forever, a dystopian future-set thriller where the title character and her family fight for survival. As previously mentioned, you can also catch 3 From Hell on Shudder from February, with the release schedule as follows:

  • 01/30 – Bliss
  • 02/06 – Dogs Don’t Wear Pants
  • 02/13 – 3 From Hell
  • 02/20 – Jessica Forever

The Shudder movie library is also getting some great classics and shorts for February, including some titles that tie into the month’s romantic theme. The lineup is as follows:

Feb 1

  • Child’s Play (1988 version)
  • Escape from New York
  • The Fog (1980 version)
  • My Bloody Valentine (2009 version)
  • Night of the Comet

Feb 3

  • Like Me
  • The Whistler (short)

Feb 10

  • Catcalls (short)
  • The Golden Glove
  • The Hills Have Eyes (1977 version)
  • Prom Night (1980 version)
  • Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night II

Escape-From-New-York-Poster-starring-Kurt-Russell-as-Snake-Plissken

Feb 17

  • Blanketty (short)
  • Seoul Station
  • Return of the Living Dead III

Feb 24

  • Dog Soldiers
  • Empathy, Inc.
  • Wendigo

In addition, Shudder are curating “Love Sick,” a collection of Valentine-themed titles, including:

  • Dogs Don’t Wear Pants
  • Lizzie
  • Beast
  • My Bloody Valentine (1981 version)
  • Audition
  • The Love Witch
  • Spring
  • Ganja & Hess
  • Double Lover
  • November
  • Are We Not Cats
  • Honeymoon
  • Little Deaths
  • Kiss of the Damned
  • Return of the Living Dead III
  • Night of the Living Debs
  • Prom Night (1980 version)
  • Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night II
  • A Discovery of Witches (series)

And finally, fans of Shudder’s excellent Horror Noire documentary on African-American cinema can check out its spinoff podcast in February, which includes extended interviews with the participants.

So there we have it, a solid collection of new and classic movies, as well as 3 From Hell, to keep horror and thriller hounds happy in February. Are there any titles that you’re particularly keen to see, though? As always, let us know down below.

The price hike was disclosed in a message the company sent to Rev transcribers on Thursday outlining the change and assuring the contract workers that this is not expected to significantly impact the number of job orders available. The company, which has been around since 2010, is one of the leading online transcription services, and it made its name largely off its advertised $1 per minute rate.

“We’ve already spoken with dozens of clients. They seem to get it: companies raise prices. Rev has been charging $1 per minute since we launched almost a decade ago and that’s been far less than our competition,” reads Rev’s message to...

Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness Rumored To Introduce [SPOILERS] Into The MCU

Despite recently losing director Scott Derrickson, reportedly as a result of disagreements over the movie’s tone with Kevin Feige, and not having hired a replacement yet, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is still set to start shooting in May. With the beginning of production looming, hiring someone to take over behind the camera is just one of the sequel’s worries. There’s also the small matter of filling out the rest of the cast, with only Benedicts Cumberbatch and Wong confirmed to return alongside Elizabeth Olsen and Rachel McAdams.

Obviously, the Sorcerer Supreme’s second solo adventure is going to need quite a large ensemble in place, given that the title makes it clear that the follow-up will be set across multiple alternate realities. Multiverse of Madness is said to be hugely important for the Marvel Cinematic Universe going forward, too, and will mark the start of the franchise’s movies and TV shows dovetailing together, with the events of WandaVision set to be integral to further expanding the world of Doctor Strange.

There’s already been plenty of rumors about the virtually infinite array of characters past, present and future that could potentially show up at some stage, and now, the latest report indicates that America Chavez, also known as Miss America, could be set for her MCU debut. This comes from the sometimes-reliable Jeremy Conrad of MCU Cosmic, who says that the movie is looking for a Hispanic teenage girl to play a female supporting lead.

While that obviously doesn’t confirm anything, Miss America has been one of the names Marvel Studios have been looking to bring in for a while now. Not to mention that one of the greatest strengths of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness‘ reality-bending narrative is that if there’s a plot device or character that fans don’t like, which is always a possibility given the increasing backlash to a number of high profile blockbusters these days, then retconning it becomes a relatively straightforward task.

Circling back to Chavez though, and it’s unclear what role she’d play if this is indeed her that they’re casting for, but as soon as we get additional information, we’ll be sure to let you know.
