The latest James Gunn conspiracy theory claims the DC chief is deliberately sabotaging the franchise for personal gain
I’ll just come out and say it; I’m positively gobsmacked that the cult of Zack Snyder doesn’t have a larger reputation in the underground club scene (which I can neither confirm nor deny that I’m able to properly observe); after all, if they found a way to sell whatever hallucinogens they huff on a daily basis, they’d be too busy learning the art of tax evasion to continue posting their neurotic musings on Twitter.
Indeed, the inner machinations of the collective Snyder cult mind expertly encapsulate the notion of stranger than fiction, especially considering that they seem to be experts in the fictitious, so to speak. And today, the machine has churned out yet another conspiracy theory about James Gunn; the dreaming up of which was no doubt a particularly spicy use of one’s clearly ample time.
In the latest edition to the tinfoil hat files, one Snyder fan schemed up the possibility that Gunn, the very capable creative spearhead of the new DCU whether you like it or not, is deliberately sabotaging the outgoing DC Extended Universe so that his movies will look fantastic by comparison.
Let’s break down the lunacy here; Gunn has been making superhero films long before he acclimated to co-chair of DC Studios, and given the reception of his Guardians trilogy, The Suicide Squad, and Peacemaker, it’s clear that he doesn’t need other movies to be bad in order for his own to look good. This is only compounded by the fact that Gunn couldn’t possibly, comprehensibly sabotage the DCEU more than it’s already sabotaged itself over the many dire years it’s been trying to jumble itself together.
Zack, if you’re reading this, you have my sincerest sympathies; your movies may be a bit rocky at times, but your wonderfully evocative imagination doesn’t deserve to be overshadowed by these people, and you have my word that I’ll be watching Rebel Moon sincerely, even if I’m in the minority there.

‘Barbie’ throws a jab at Zack Snyder, perhaps not realizing his ‘secret passion’
Barbie has finally rolled up in her hot pink sports car and is set to tear up the summer box office. The hotly anticipated movie arrived to hugely positive reviews and has just demolished Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3‘s Thursday night previews, meaning it may well be in line to crack the coveted billion-dollar mark at the international box office.
The satirical movie doesn’t pull any punches, but there’s one little jab that may have gone slightly awry. At one point, a Barbie is recovering from being brainwashed into a patriarchal world, mentioning that for a moment she became someone who was extremely invested in Zack Snyder’s Justice League.
We loved both Barbie and Zack Snyder’s Justice League, but though the joke stings a little we can’t deny it’s a pretty funny line. But what Greta Gerwig might not have appreciated is that Zack Snyder appears to be a big Barbie movie fan, going as far as to describe it as “his secret passion”:
Now, Snyder is the father to eight children, so it’s just possible that these movies were purchased for one of them to watch rather than himself.
But that’s the much less funny option, so we’re just going to believe that the director of the action-fuelled gritty and operatic muscle-fests of 300, Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League likes to relax with a big bucket of popcorn and a viewing of Barbie: A Fairy Secret.
Barbie is now in theaters.

The usual suspects barricade themselves in their parents’ basements to try and take down ‘Barbie’
Barbie is upon us. Greta Gerwig’s hotly anticipated take on the iconic toy has surfed a wave of hype into theaters and lived up to its promises. It’s sitting pretty at 89% on the Tomatometer, is set to demolish Oppenheimer, and with a healthy $20 million preview screening haul may yet join the billion-dollar club.
But some people are determined to ruin the party. So, who would really have an axe to grind against an upbeat and satirical movie with a strong lead female character and some things to say about patriarchy? Hey, wait, what’s that unwashed smell coming from over the hill? Oh no, the incels are coming!
A surprising number of bearded middle-aged men appear to have grumpily turned up on the opening night of Barbie to hate-watch it, immediately taking to the internet to post unhinged screeds.
Don’t threaten us with a good time:
We don’t need to read the seventeen(!) tweets in this thread to know where this is going…
A great pull quote for the poster:
Wow, a whole hour of a furious guy in his forties screaming about Barbie and feminism! Who could resist?
Sadly for these goons, Barbie appears unassailable, so they’ve retreated to the one tiny place they have any power. Yup, it’s the IMDB rating, where there appears to be a concerted effort to review-bomb it into oblivion:
As you’d expect, the negative user reviews revolve around Barbie‘s feminism, blaming it for “falling birthrates”, a crumbling society, that “Joseph Goebbels would be proud”, and that it encourages the “feminist matriarchy”.
It’s been said a million times before, but these are people that definitely need to get away from their computers and touch grass. Jeez.
Barbie is now in theaters.

‘From your mouth to Kevin Feige’s ear’: One of Marvel’s best-ever villains hardly against the idea of a return
What a remarkable journey the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been on since Tony Stark first stepped into the ring back in 2008. Having been born, reborn, and then seemingly born again all in the span of 15 years, one might be forgiven for forgetting that this brave new era of the MCU, from WandaVision to The Marvels to Secret Invasion, had anything to do with the franchise’s past life on Netflix. After all, it seems the studio does at times.
Whether that’s for better or worse depends on where you stand on the state of present-day MCU. For example, plugging one of the MCU’s legacy television antagonists back into the equation would yield results that are far too sinister for where the franchise tends to tread these days, but perhaps it’s that same extreme vileness that would make such a return so enticing.
If you’re in the latter camp, keep those fingers crossed; in a recent interview with ComicBook.com, David Tennant – who portrays the villain in question, Kilgrave – inadvertently revealed to Kevin Feige that he stands at the ready to take that particular phonecall.
From your mouth to Kevin Feige’s ear. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Great. Very good.
For those of you not in the know about Kilgrave, know that the Jessica Jones antagonist is something of a depraved manipulator who happens to gain the ability to literally control the minds of others, and also happens to become obsessed with the protagonist. Needless to say, his resulting exploits (take that word as you will) would certainly never fly in today’s MCU.
Indeed, the more modern Marvel villains may be rather dastardly in their own right, but as long as the ethos of the Feige era is maintained, we’ll likely never see a villain truly as horrible and provocative as Kilgrave ever again, and if, by some divine intervention, he does come back into the fold, many a question would be raised. Questions that we doubt the franchise is prepared to answer.
Jessica Jones is available to stream on Disney Plus.

‘The Marvels’ already at risk of overstuffing itself as the sequel to 4 MCU projects at once
You know the Marvel Cinematic Universe has a content problem when the CEO of Disney comes right out and admits that the advent of the franchise’s expansion into episodic storytelling has had a detrimental effect, which leaves The Marvels in a potentially precarious position.
Trolls are already sharpening their knives following the recent release of a new trailer for the sole purpose the movie exists as a sequel to Captain Marvel, the billion-dollar blockbuster that a certain section of the “fandom” have never been able to reconcile with.
Outside of that, though, Nia DaCosta’s intergalactic epic also has to pick up the plot threads left behind by WandaVision and its introduction of Monica Rambeau – who eventually acquired superpowers of her own – as well as carrying on from where Ms. Marvel left off, not to mention the aftermath of Secret Invasion given the involvement of Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury, as well as Carol Danvers’ own history with the Skrulls.
While the benefit of the doubt should always be given, The Marvels having to deliver a worthy standalone story at the same time it needs to address the after-effects left behind by no less than four previous projects – which includes the MCU’s most-hated movie, its least-watched TV series, and its lowest-rated Disney Plus original on Rotten Tomatoes – presents quite the delicate balancing act.
There are of course many wanting it to fail by virtue of the fact it’s awaiting release, but as always the best method to flip the bird at the trolls is to deliver an inarguably excellent comic book adaptation.
