All Microsoft events will be digital-only until July 2021

Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge

Microsoft is planning to make all of its internal and external events digital-only until July 2021 due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The software maker had already revealed Build 2020, due to be held in Seattle in May, would transform into a digital event. This digital-only focus is now extending to far more events over the next year.

“In light of the challenges presented by COVID-19, Microsoft has been closely monitoring the developing global situation and re-assessing the overall company-wide in-person event strategy,” explains a recent email to Microsoft MVPs. “As a company, Microsoft has made the decision to transition all external and internal events to a digital-first experience through July 2021.”

Hinge will let people tap a button to say they’re ready for a video call date

Hinge

A pandemic has taken over the world, but people are still dating. Today, Hinge is launching a new feature, called Date from Home, that the team thinks will make it easier to transition the texting chat into a video call.

From a chat, daters can tap whether they’re ready to have a video call outside of the app, and once both people agree to do so, the app will let them know they’re “ready” for a date. This might facilitate the discussion of moving off the app because there’s a smaller chance of rejection. The app is also getting an update to the We Met feature to ask if people ended up having a phone or video chat and whether this is the type of person who they’d want to chat with again.

Microsoft opens up xCloud beta registration to 11 European countries

Microsoft is starting to open up its xCloud game streaming beta to countries across Europe. The software giant originally launched the xCloud preview in the US, UK, and Korea back in September, and it’s expanding to Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, and Sweden.

Anyone in these countries can now sign up for the Android version of xCloud, but Microsoft appears to be taking a careful approach to when people will actually get access due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. “We know gaming is an important way for people to remain connected, particularly during these times of social distancing, but we also recognize how internet bandwidth has been impacted with strain on regional networks...

WhatsApp puts new limits on the forwarding of viral messages

With heightened scrutiny on the potential of private message apps to spread misinformation related to the coronavirus pandemic, WhatsApp on Tuesday said it would place new limits on the forwarding of messages. Starting today, messages that have been identified as “highly forwarded” — sent through a chain of five or more people — can only be forwarded to a single person. The move is designed to reduce the speed with which information moves through WhatsApp, putting truth and fiction on a more even footing.

“We know many users forward helpful information, as well as funny videos, memes, and reflections or prayers they find meaningful. In recent weeks, people have also used WhatsApp to organize public moments of support for frontline health...

Samsung’s profits are slightly up during the COVID-19 outbreak

Photo by Avery White for The Ver

Samsung Electronics is one of the first major tech giants to announce earnings figures since the coronavirus pandemic broke out, and so far at least the company appears to have been relatively unaffected. In guidance released today, Samsung says its first-quarter revenue was approximately 55 trillion won ($44.9 billion), which would be a year-on-year increase of five percent. Operating profit is expected to rise three percent to 6.4 trillion won ($5.23 billion).

Samsung does not break down its earnings guidance by division or comment on its business performance until the final report is released later in the month. Daiwa Securities’ SK Kim suggests to CNBC that the company’s all-important memory chip unit is likely to perform well in the...

Here’s How Stranger Things’ Dacre Montgomery Could Look As The Fantastic Four’s Human Torch

Digital artist Bobby_Art recently took to Instagram to show us what Stranger Things star Dacre Montgomery could look like as the Human Torch. It’s a simple image of the actor dawning the suit with his arms beginning to turn to fire, but it’s certainly effective.

Of course, with Disney acquiring Fox last year, Marvel can now incorporate the Fantastic Four into the MCU and reports have been swirling for some time now that John Krasinski and Emily Blunt are the frontrunners to play Reed Richards AKA Mr. Fantastic and Susan Storm AKA the Invisible Woman. As for the other two members of the team, it’s anyone’s guess as to who will snag those roles, but Montgomery certainly showcased his cockiness on Stranger Things playing Billy Hargrove and he does have some experience in the action genre having been in the Power Rangers reboot from 2017. In other words, the poor man’s Zac Efron is more than capable of playing the Human Torch and this awesome fan art is another reminder of that.

During Marvel Studios’ Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con last year, Fantastic Four was not included in the Phase 4 slate, but president Kevin Feige did confirm that the project is in development. They need to take their time with the franchise though as if you include the horrible early ‘90s movie, Fantastic Four is 0 for 3. The Tim Story-directed films from the mid ‘00s had a couple of redeeming qualities, sure, but they were largely disposable and goofy superhero movies that failed to leave an impression.

Then there was the doomed 2015 reboot from director Josh Trank. The trailers teased a darker, more grounded take on Marvel’s First Family, but what we got was a slow and boring flick full of choppy editing, bad wigs and an uninspired ending. Kevin Feige and co. know what they’re doing at this point, though. Twelve years, 23 movies and more than $22 billion later, I trust that they can finally get this right. They already turned around Spider-Man, and I bet you that Fantastic Four is next.

Next Star Wars Movie Still Releasing In 2022 Despite COVID-19 Delays

The outbreak of the COVID-19 has forced all major productions in Hollywood to shut down and distributors to postpone the release date of their movies, but it would seem the Mouse House is planning to go ahead with the next major Star Wars film after The Rise of Skywalker brought the main saga to a definitive end late last year.

Now that the last chapter in the story of Skywalkers is out of the way, the future of the galaxy far, far away remains in an ambiguous state. While Disney initially planned several movies for release in the near future, including Rian Johnson’s independent trilogy and Game of Thrones creators D.B. Weiss and David Benioff’s films, none of these projects entered production for obvious reasons. Of course, to help fill the void, Lucasfilm has launched a publishing initiative under Star Wars: The High Republic that’ll feature all-new stories set some 200 years before the events of Episode I – The Phantom Menace, but what about the future of the franchise on the big screen?

After all, even though the fans appreciate the extra content in the form of books and other respective mediums, Star Wars has always been, at its core, a movie series. Well, answering that question is not as simple as you would imagine. Disney originally intended to develop a new film for release in 2022, but amid the recent production halts, even across the MCU, it’s likely that the as-of-yet untitled Star Wars movie project will also get delayed.

And yet, the Mouse House recently released a revised schedule for its upcoming projects, and while most of them have been shifted to another date, the next major movie in that galaxy far, far away is still set for release on December 16th, 2022.

Hopefully, if things begin to slide back into their normal state in the coming months, the next Star Wars pic will continue development unabated, but seeing as how things are turning out for communities around the world in their fight against the deadly disease, we wouldn’t really hold our breaths.

Tell us, though, are you excited about the next movie? Or do you feel the divisive and lackluster finale of the Skywalker Saga has doomed Disney’s hopes of redeeming the franchise? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
