The Batman Is Reportedly Very Graphic, Dark And Scary

The Batman is scheduled to release in just over six months, and there’s still so much we don’t know about it. The first trailer for Matt Reeves’ reimagining of the Dark Knight’s mythos was released in summer 2020 – with another dropping this October at DC FanDome – and it promised a gritty detective thriller rather than a flashy superhero blockbuster. But, according to the latest rumors, it could even have a horror movie flavor to it.

Podcaster @blurayangel has alleged on Twitter that he knows someone lucky enough to have seen an early cut of the Robert Pattinson vehicle at a test screening, and their reaction couldn’t be more glowing. The unnamed source revealed that The Batman is “very graphic, very dark, very scary”. In particular, they praised Paul Dano’s chilling portrayal of Edward Nashton/The Riddler. “I loved every second,” they concluded.

In follow-up tweets, @blurayangel shared more of their friend’s thoughts. They labeled Zoë Kravitz their new favorite Catwoman and praised Pattinson’s Batman voice as “perfect”. In arguably the most intriguing comment, the source claimed that there’s a mind-blowing scene at the end of the movie that made everyone in attendance scream and gasp.

Another tweet reports that the cut seen by the source reached 3 hours in length. This doesn’t necessarily mean that the finished film will hit that epic total, of course, as it’s common for rougher, unfinished edits to be screened for test audiences before being trimmed down for general release. With that said, though, don’t be surprised to see the final runtime settle around the 2-hour mark.

Fans weren’t expecting a “horror movie” vibe, but we know Dano’s Riddler is a serial killer in this iteration, so it seems Reeves is going to really lean into the character’s darkness – don’t expect the family-friendly (ish) green-suited puzzler from the comics and previous adaptations to show up here. All in all, these reactions have only got us more buzzed to see The Batman when it finally swoops into cinemas on March 4th, 2022.

Eternals Star Didn’t Want His Character To Be A Stereotype

Kumail Nanjiani is clearly taking his role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe very seriously, looking at how the comedian got insanely ripped to play Kingo in Chloé Zhao’s Eternals. It was a shocking transformation for the Academy Award nominated writer, who was best known for playing mild-mannered regular dudes in film and television.

In the comic books, Kingo’s appearance is based on a samurai, but in the modern day he’s masquerading as an action star in Japan. Once Nanjiani was cast in Eternals, he and Zhao refitted the character as a Bollywood superstar who abandons his comfortable existence to assist his superpowered cohorts in their hour of need, and we’re even getting a full-blown musical number out of the bargain.

In a new interview, the Pakistani-born Nanjiani explained how he wanted to use his debut in the big budget superhero genre as a means to actively avoid the usual outdated depictions of South Asian and Middle Eastern natives that tend to be found in action-driven cinema.

“He’s an Eternal so he’s been here for thousands of years. He has these super powers and he’s become a Bollywood movie star. All the Eternals have been in human society to different degrees, but he’s the one who really immersed himself and falls in love with the trappings of modernity. And he loves being rich. He loves being famous. He loves being an Eternal. I’ve been in this industry for about a decade and I looked at the usual opportunities that the brown dudes get.

We get to be nerdy. I wanted him to be the opposite of that, I wanted him to be cool. With nerdy goes ‘weakling’, and I wanted him to be the opposite of that and to be strong physically. Or we get to be terrorists, and I wanted him to be the opposite of that. I wanted him to be this character full of joy. In working with Chloé, we were like, let’s take every single thing that I haven’t gotten to do and make a character who’s the exact opposite of the way a lot of American pop culture see people from Pakistan or the Middle East.”

Nanjiani has been steadily rising up the Hollywood ranks for a while now, with Eternals poised to take his career to the next level. Very few people would have bought into the idea of him as an action hero until he posted those viral shirtless pictures, but he’s now got the look that the industry favors in its leading men to go with his innate likeability, understated charisma and natural comic timing.

Wonder Woman Director Says She’d Never Make A Movie For Streaming

Up until the release of Wonder Woman in the summer of 2017, it had been fourteen years since Patty Jenkins last directed a feature film. Her previous effort Monster had scored widespread critical acclaim, earned almost $65 million at the box office on an $8 million budget and nabbed Charlize Theron an Academy Award for Best Actress, but she’s dived headfirst into the blockbuster business since making her return behind the camera.

Wonder Woman 1984 may have struggled commercially due to the effects of the pandemic, while reviews were a lot more muted second time around, but a third installment was fast-tracked into development just days after the DCEU sequel was released. Jenkins is now gearing to shoot Star Wars: Rogue Squadron, and that Cleopatra epic with Gal Gadot remains firmly on the cards.

The filmmaker has spoken at length about Wonder Woman 1984‘s simultaneous HBO Max release, describing it as the best option out of a bunch of bad ones. In a new interview, the 50 year-old admitted that she’s got no interest whatsoever in directing a movie for Netflix, or any other streaming service for that matter.

“I make movies for the big-screen experience. I won’t make one. I like working with Netflix for television, I wouldn’t make a movie there or any streaming service with those terms. It’s hard to market a movie when it has a limited run.”

Netflix have attracted some of the biggest, best and brightest talents in the industry through the promise of almost complete creative freedom, but that clearly doesn’t appeal to Jenkins, who wants to see her work played exclusively in theaters. It’ll be interesting to see if that opinion changes at all, though, when streaming has been largely immune from the effects of the COVID-19 era.

Robert Rodriguez Says His Next Movie Is Hitchcock On Steroids

Robert Rodriguez clearly isn’t a big fan of taking it easy, with the filmmaker constantly juggling multiple projects at once. He’s one of the most multi-talented individuals in the business that’s held almost every imaginable job on a production, the majority of which he develops himself through his Troublemaker Studios.

He produced, wrote, directed, scored, edited and served as cinematographer on Netflix’s We Can Be Heroes, jumped straight into a guest spot behind the camera on The Mandalorian as a favor to Jon Favreau and ended up as an executive producer on The Book of Boba Fett, while he’s also helming a couple of episodes himself.

His company recently signed a first-look television deal with HBO Max, he’s developing a Zorro TV show and the We Can Be Heroes sequel shoots next year. Before that, though, he’s teaming up with Ben Affleck for sci-fi thriller Hypnotic, which Rodriguez has been working on for almost two decades.

Co-written by the MonsterVerse’s Max Borenstein, Affleck plays a detective investigating a series of high profile crimes that gets caught up in a conspiracy involving his missing daughter and a top secret government program. In a new interview, Rodriguez teased that he’s aiming high with the premise.

“It’s like a Hitchcock thriller on steroids. That’s all I can say. As soon as you see the first trailer, you’ll go ‘I got it. I’m there’. It’s that kind of a movie. A lot of twists, a lot of turns. Very exciting. It’s a not everything you see is real-type movie and it’s got a great cast. It’ll be very energetic. It’s one of my favorite stories. I started writing it back in 2002. So it’s one of the ones I’ve had the longest that I’ve been wanting to do. I’m very excited that we finally might be making it.”

Ben Affleck

Alice Braga co-stars in Hypnotic, and with production scheduled to begin in the next six weeks, we could be seeing the finished product at some point next year looking at the relentless pace Rodriguez is famed for when it comes to his output, and then it’s more than likely he’ll move right on to We Can Be Heroes 2.

Little Mermaid Star Says It’s The Craziest Thing He’s Ever Seen

When you think of Disney’s live-action remakes based on the back catalogue of animated classics, ‘crazy’ is hardly the first word that comes to find. The majority of them are perfectly acceptable and very safe retreads that offer nothing new or original to a story that everybody’s already more than familiar with.

A couple of subplots are typically added to pad out the running time to a more palatable and feature film-friendly length, but almost everything remains the same, from the story and characters right down to the dialogue and songs, which are often lifted verbatim from their animated counterparts.

Even Cruella hit plenty of familiar beats despite being a prequel origin story, so it’s intriguing to hear The Little Mermaid star Daveed Diggs describe the musical fantasy film as the craziest thing he’s ever seen. While the actor is obviously sworn to secrecy on specifics, he did hint that the project could be much more than a simple facsimile of the classic 1989 original.

“It was quite an undertaking. I’m excited too, I haven’t seen anything. It’s not like Disney’s giving me private screenings, I’ve seen nothing. I’m super excited because some of the stuff we were doing when we were on the stage were some of the beautiful, like, craziest filmmaking I’ve ever seen. I can’t wait. And Halle’s a star. She’s really, really special.”

Disney veteran Rob Marshall is at the helm of The Little Mermaid, and while he’s got plenty of experience when it comes to effects-driven fare from the studio having directed Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Into the Woods and Mary Poppins Returns, it wouldn’t be unfair to say that none of those movies are particularly remarkable in any way.

As always, though, there’s a solid ensemble in place that sees Halle Bailey as the title heroine with support coming from Diggs, Melissa McCarthy, Javier Bardem, Jacob Tremblay, Awkwafina and others, so The Little Mermaid definitely has the potential to stand out from the pack.
