Star Wars continuity is a little more complex than other fictional universes. Whereas other fictional universes like Star Trek and The Lord of the Rings cover centuries, the gap between The Phantom Menace and The Rise of Skywalker is just 67 years. Within that time both the Empire and the First Order rise and fall, there are two massive galaxy-spanning conflicts and practically every piece of canon Star Wars media take place.
Lucasfilm famously has a dedicated story group devoted to untangling all this, but some things still slip through the cracks. One common problem is that characters who appear in both the original and prequel trilogies don’t acknowledge that they’ve previously met C-3PO and R2D2. Now, the actual reason is because George Lucas hadn’t planned out the exact details of the prequels in the early-1980s, but that obviously doesn’t apply in-universe.
Now new book From a Certain Point of View: The Empire Strikes Back has answered at least one of these problems. The book depicts the events of The Empire Strikes Back from unusual perspectives – with Jim Zub’s “The First Lesson” proving that Yoda did indeed recognize R2D2 when he arrived on Dagobah with Luke. As the story reveals:
“Carefully moving through the swamp while staying beneath the fog, Yoda soon spotted the boy and his droid unpacking their supplies. Even though the droid was caked with algae, dirt, and stomach fluid, its appearance and familiar blips were still quite recognizable.
R2-D2.
“Of course the boy had Anakin’s old droid with him. Such cycles of fate no longer surprised the nine-hundred-year-old Jedi.”
Well there you have it. While it’s nice that this has been cleared up, I would also have been happy with the hand-wave that there are a lot of protocol and astromech droids out there in a galaxy far, far away and as they’re all nearly identical it’s tough to tell them apart.
Just because the Skywalker Saga has wrapped up doesn’t mean C-3PO and R2D2 are gone for good. They’re due to star in upcoming animated TV movie A Droid Story, which will see the bickering metal odd couple on a secret mission during which they guide a new character. No word on when it’ll land (or if Anthony Daniels will reprise C-3PO), but I reckon it could hit Disney+ before the end of this year.
More on that and other Star Wars news as we hear it!
Robert Rodriguez’s hit new Netflix movie, We Can Be Heroes, gained some extra buzz for featuring the unlikely comeback of the heroes of The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl. Yet the director’s films occupying the same cinematic universe is nothing new. He previously brought back Danny Trejo’s Machete from the Spy Kids franchise and turned him into the protagonist of his own adults-only action series. But fans have been waiting for more from Machete for a long time now.
At the end of 2013’s Machete Kills, a threequel was teased with a brief trailer that unveiled its extraterrestrial title – Machete Kills Again… In Space. Fans loved the concept of the filmmaker going even bolder and crazier with the franchise, but eight years later, and we’re still waiting for it to materialize. While speaking to Discussing Film, Rodriguez admitted that the idea for the third movie was sort of intended as a joke – but audiences took to it way more than anticipated.
“We tried to make it in the trailer,” Rodriguez said. “We said: let’s just make the trailer. That will satisfy people because they’ll see enough of it in the trailer. They’ll go, ‘Okay I already saw that movie.’ But no, they still keep asking anyway (laughs)!”
Machete started life as a fake trailer in Quentin Tarantino’s Grindhouse before it was actually turned into a feature in 2010, so fans shouldn’t give up hope just yet that … In Space could happen some day. That said, even Trejo admits it’s looking unlikely at this stage, though he would direct the thing himself if he could.
Apart from being something of a joke, another reason the next Machete movie’s not in development right now is due to how busy Rodriguez is. For the moment, he seems to be focusing on his more family-friendly fare. Following We Can Be Heroes’ strong performance, he’s already working on a sequel. Plus, after directing an episode of season 2 of the Star Wars show, Rodriguez is involved with Mandalorian spinoff series The Book of Boba Fett for Disney Plus, which is shooting now and coming to streaming this December.
Netflix’s latest family movie has proven to be a huge hit with subscribers. We Can Be Heroes dropped on Christmas Day and so far, it’s believed that 44 million users have lapped up the superhero flick from director Robert Rodriguez. Given that stellar opening, it’s no surprise that the streaming giant quickly ordered a sequel, with Rodriguez revealed to be starting development on a second part soon.
The Spy Kids filmmaker confirmed the news himself on Twitter. “44 MILLION FAMILIES will have suited up for WE CAN BE HEROES in its first 4 weeks!! And… BREAKING NEWS: The Heroics are coming back for round two! I’m in full development of the sequel with @Netflix,” he wrote on social media. Fans were delighted by the news, as was one of the movie’s stars. Pedro Pascal retweeted Rodriguez’s post and added some praise for the man himself. “Cuz you’re a BOSS!” The Mandalorian star said.

We Can Be Heroes was one of a trifecta of hit new releases starring Pascal that landed in December. First, Disney Plus’ The Mandalorian concluded its hit second season and then both WCBH and Wonder Woman 1984 dropped on streaming on the 25th (WW84 is available on HBO Max). In Rodriguez’s film, Pascal plays Marcus Moreno, one of the superpowered parents abducted by aliens whose kids have to step up and save them.
YaYa Gosselin led the movie as Marcus’ daughter Missy Moreno, with the cast featuring a bunch of familiar faces such as Priyanka Chopra Jones, Boyd Holbrook, Christian Slater and even Taylor Dooley, reprising her role from Rodriguez’s 2005 effort The Adventures of Shark Boy and Lavagirl. Christopher McDonald also returned as the President, after playing the same part in Spy Kids 2. Hopefully the sequel will dig deeper into this Rodriguez-verse concept.
Tell us, though, are you as excited for We Can Be Heroes 2 as Pedro Pascal is? Sound off with your thoughts in the comments section.
In a turn of events that nobody could have seen coming, Zack Snyder has two movies heading to streaming this year, both of which find the filmmaker on familiar turf and revisiting a genre that’s served him very well in the past.
Of course, his brand new version of Justice League is the one grabbing all of the headlines, which is completely understandable when fans have been demanding to see his cut of the dismal DCEU blockbuster for well over three years at this point, and the HBO Max exclusive is set to debut in March with audiences waiting to discover if it’ll be worth all of the hype.
Meanwhile, Netflix’s Army of the Dead doesn’t have an official release date yet, but it marks Snyder’s return to the realm of the undead for the first time since his debut feature Dawn of the Dead. The concept is about as high as they come, too, following an elite group of mercenaries planning a heist on a Las Vegas casino smack dab in the middle of a zombie apocalypse.
Two new images have now been revealed from the upcoming actioner, one of which gives you a great idea of how the hulking Dave Bautista compares to a normal sized human being, and you can check them both out below.
We haven’t even seen any footage from the movie yet, but Netflix must be incredibly confident that it’ll launch a franchise because a prequel has already wrapped shooting, while an anime series is also in the works. Once the Snyder Cut has been unleashed upon the world, focus will swiftly shift to Army of the Dead to build anticipation for the streaming giant’s latest big budget blockbuster, and it’s expected to be with us at some point later this year.
