‘Secret Invasion’ revelation means the MCU just killed off one of its greatest heroes

Secret Invasion might’ve failed to turn the MCU on its head in the same way as the comic book event did the Marvel Comics universe, but it still dropped one major bombshell in our laps that it’s going to take a long while to unpick. Yes, Rhodey has been a Skrull imposter for “a long time,” with context clues telling us we may not have seen the real War Machine since his injury in Captain America: Civil War.

Following Fury killing Raava, his identity-stealing imposter, in the finale, though, Rhodey fans can relax knowing that the character will be back to his old self in time for his upcoming movie, Armor Wars. But a mind-blowing, entirely logical, point has now been raised that’s causing the Marvel fandom to question their feelings about Raava: considering she might well have been Rhodey in Avengers: Endgame, that means the MCU might’ve just killed one of its greatest heroes.

As the title of a Reddit post that’s getting people talking put it, “Secret Invasion Killed Off A True MCU hero.” The OP argues that, although Raava’s subterfuge in replacing Rhodey all this time is certainly un-heroic, War Machine was an instrumental part of the Avengers’ team that successfully completed the Time Heist and ultimately defeat Thanos and his forces in the Battle of Earth. If we’re being made to believe this was Raava the whole time, she displayed real courage and compassion for both her “fellow” Avengers and for the world at large.

And then Nick Fury just went and shot the poor Skrull in the head. Even though he knows full well the complicated nature of the aliens’ relationship to their human guises, through his wife Priscilla/Varra. Not cool, Fury. #Justice4Skrhodey.

‘Picketing Disney is a lot more fun than writing a ‘Star Wars’ movie’: Damon Lindelof turns the tables on the Mouse House

Standing on the picket lines outside the Disney lot in Burbank, Screenwriter Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson gave a piece of their mind to their former employer.

It’s hard to believe it, but we’re past day 100 of the WGA strike, and there is no sign of it coming to an end anytime soon. But here we are, and it seems the strikers are more resolved than ever to stand their ground and show the big studios that they mean business.

Amongst those on the picket lines were screenwriter pals Lindelof and Britt-Gibson. The pair spoke with The Hollywood Reporter regarding the ongoing studio holdout.

Speaking on how they’re all feeling after such a long time picketing, Lindelof spoke about he and his fellow writer’s resolve to see the strike through.

“I feel more passionate about what we’re walking for then I was on day one […] don’t know if there’s any end in sight but feeling good.”

Despite studio plans to wait out the strike it sounds like those taking part are willing and able to wait as long as it takes to get a fair deal. Lindelof’s words were echoed by Britt-Gibson who showed no signs of backing down or tiring, either.

“I feel incredibly strong, incredibly lifted, it’s great to see all these people out here. I don’t feel like anyone is wayward at least in my circle and it’s a pretty big circle, everyone is here, everyone is ready, everyone has not given up […] we’re in this fight for the long haul.”

As it turns out, the pair have a score to settle with Disney, as they were working on a Star Wars movie together before Lindelof was asked to leave, with the project ultimately being canceled. Disney may come to regret that decision, as it seems to have fed both writers resolve to stick it to the Mouse House.

“Justin and I wrote a Star Wars movie together. Picketing Disney is more fun.”

Lindelof’s Star Wars film would have reportedly seen a much older Rey training Jedi knights, but it was ultimately scrapped back in April. So now both writers have a personal reason to stay on the picket lines, as Britt-Gibson says in the interview: “Strike the Empire back baby!”

‘It was fine for me’: Two-time ‘James Bond’ director has no problem with the explosive ending of ‘No Time to Die’

Daniel Craig’s James Bond swansong No Time to Die is now two years old, and we still don’t have a sniff of news about his successor. Barbara Broccoli has said EON and MGM are going to take time getting it right, though given the ending of the last one, we can at least assume this will be a reboot.

That’s because – spoilers for a 2021 movie incoming – James Bond doesn’t make it to the credits. The superspy is finally put in a deathtrap even he can’t escape from, and after defeating the sinister Safin and saving his daughter, is killed by a missile strike. There’s no ambiguity here. Bond is, as they say, brown bread.

So, where do you go from here? GoldenEye and Casino Royale director Martin Campbell revealed to Express that he thinks it’s actually super easy, barely an inconvenience.

“To be honest, it was fine for me. He gets killed off, which is fine because when they do the next Bond, they’ll completely ignore the fact that he was killed off and Bond will keep going. It’s so simple. There’s no explanation required is there? Daniel Craig was Bond and now the next guy is alive. They’re not going to have a problem with that.”

After five movies about an older Bond dealing with his failing body and sense of obsolescence, we’re hoping EON go the other way when Bond returns. Perhaps a younger take on the hero is a smart way forward, with a story focused on how his skills let him seamlessly navigate a digital world rather than battle against it. Then again, Tom Cruise is doing exactly that in Mission: Impossible.

The ongoing strikes may slow down the Bond production line, though theoretically British (and Irish and Australian) actors can still work as their union isn’t on strike. Fingers crossed we get an unveiling and indication of direction soon, because while we’ve been assured “James Bond will return,” it sure is taking a while.
