A new open design challenge for a 44-year-old company
Google employees are organizing a phone drive to press lawmakers to legally end forced arbitration.
In February, Google said it would end its use of forced arbitration clauses. The clauses, which are widely used in many industries, funnel employee complaints to a private legal system instead of the courts. Critics of the policies say they give employers an advantage over workers in disputes.
But while Google dropped the policy, some employees are looking for national legislation to ban the practice across the United States. Employees recently appeared alongside Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) to urge Congress to pass the Forced Arbitration Injustice Repeal (FAIR) Act.

There was a ton of reader interest in the new Powerbeats Pro, which are the first true wireless earbuds coming from Apple’s Beats brand. Today, Apple announced that the Powerbeats Pro will go up for preorder on May 3rd at 7AM PT (10AM ET) and hit retail stores starting on May 10th. That’s only for black, however; the other three colors won’t be shipping until sometime this summer. The earbuds cost $249.95.
The Powerbeats Pro resemble the company’s previous wireless Powerbeats earphones, but they’ve been reengineered for better comfort. Beats says they can hit up to nine hours of continuous battery life — longer than AirPods — and they include Apple’s H1 chip for hands-free “Hey Siri” commands at any time. The earbuds are water and sweat...

Press renders claiming to show the unannounced Motorola RAZR V4 have appeared online in a now-deleted post on Weibo. The images were later reuploaded to SlashLeaks. If real, the renders are our first look at the phone’s design outside of a patent, and they appear to confirm its notched folding screen design. GSMArena notes that the images show a wireless charging stand that’s included with the phone alongside a typical range of accessories, all housed within a neat triangular prism-shaped package.
The look of the RAZR shown in the renders lines up with the design shown in a patent spotted back in January, although it’s impossible to see if it confirms a separate rumor about a second display on the front of the device. Unlike its...
The latest addition to Samsung’s TV range is the Sero, a 43-inch TV that was designed with the millennial generation in mind and therefore pivots between horizontal and vertical orientations. It’s a much smarter idea than the phrase “vertical TV” would lead you to believe. Acknowledging that most mobile content is vertical, Samsung says the Sero is designed to encourage young people to project more of their smartphone stuff onto the TV by allowing it to go vertical. Throwing in 4.1-channel, 60W speakers along with an integrated navy stand and a minimalist rear design, Samsung seems to hope this TV will function as both a music streaming hub and a handsome piece of furniture.
When it’s not used as a conventional TV or a phone enlarger,...

Ecuador’s intelligence agency has access to a vast Chinese-made surveillance system which could be used to spy on its citizens, a report from The New York Times has discovered. During an interview at an unmarked bunker in the country belonging to the National Intelligence Secretariat, or Senain, the paper says it inadvertently discovered Senain agents monitoring video feeds installed to help police fight crime. The discovery happened after a reporter adjusted what he thought was a dimmer switch only to reveal a hidden window that had been previously been frosted over.
The discovery is likely to increase concerns about the use of Chinese-made surveillance state equipment around the world. The ECU-911 system used in Ecuador was...

HBO’s Game of Thrones is a dense series with a huge weight of history behind its story. So in practically every episode, something happens that could use a little explanation. Every week, The Verge will dive into a scene or event from the latest episode of the series and explain how we got here. Whether you’re basically a Game of Thrones maester or you need a little reminder about previous events, we’ll try to help you keep your history straight.
Oh boy. Game of Thrones’ longest episode ever, “The Long Night,” features a spectacle that was billed as a battle unlike any other ever seen on television. (Depending on your TV setup, it may literally have gone unseen — seriously, this was a darkly lit hour and a half, which sparked an endless...

Spoilers ahead for Game of Thrones, season 8, episode 3, “The Long Night.”
As we head into the second half of the final season of Game of Thrones, our heroes have braved one of two large wars that have been set up over the course of the series. With the great war against the undead over, there are more major survivors than expected, but the heroes’ numbers have been significantly reduced by the incredible onslaught of wights. Now, Daenerys will presumably march south on King’s Landing to claim the Iron Throne, but her forces (and her claim to the rulership of Westeros) have been severely weakened over the past few episodes. In the epic fight against Cersei that’s still to come, who has numbers on their side?

It’s no secret by now (and therefore definitely not a spoiler) that Avengers: Endgame doesn’t feature a mid-credits or post-credits scene. It’s one of the few movies in the entire MCU that breaks that tradition. However, in its place, the Russo Brothers added an Easter egg that pays homage to the film that started it all, 2008’s Iron Man, as the sound of a hammer clanking on metal plays alongside the Marvel logo.
For international audiences, though, this space has opened up an opportunity for a hilarious prank in the form of an ad pretending to be an end-credits scene. As captured by a fan and shared on YouTube, audiences in Singapore got what they thought was going to be a surprise and exclusive post-credits scene, only to find out that it was an advertisement for a Huawei cell phone.
The punchline is that it looks like it could be a Marvel scene for a second, as a man appears to be drawing the moon towards him, when in reality, it’s just the zoom of a camera. You can check it out below.
With 97% of moviegoers reportedly sticking around until the end of every Marvel flick to catch a post-credits scene, it’s hard to blame Huawei for placing the ad there. However, many theaters are warning fans before the film that there’s no scene afterwards. With a 181-minute runtime – the longest of any of the MCU movies – the theaters want to get people out as quickly as possible so they can clean and seat the next, more than likely sold out show.
That quickness is also making huge box office numbers for Avengers: Endgame, as it’s already crossed $1.2 billion globally. With a cliffhanger in Infinity War that saw the decimation of hometown heroes like Spider-Man, Black Panther, and Doctor Strange, it’s hardly a surprise that the most epic MCU movie to date will also be its most profitable.
Of all the comic book characters featured in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Howard the Duck is one that most never expected to see up on the big screen. The suit-wearing, wisecracking bird featured in his own film in the 1980s, but seeing as it’s often considered one of the worst movies ever made – we kid you not – fans were surprised to see him show up in the post-credits scene of Guardians of the Galaxy. His subsequent second cameo in GotG Vol. 2 then set him up to become a recurring character in the franchise.
In fact, he was actually supposed to appear in Avengers: Infinity War last year, though ultimately, he was cut. Speaking to FANDOM around the time of its release though, co-director Anthony Russo said the following:
“Howard the Duck was in one draft of the script. Howard the Duck actually had a really good scene… we were going to cameo with [The Hangover and Community star] Ken Jeong, with Howard the Duck. That was a much-beloved scene by us but it just didn’t end up fitting at all.”
Fair enough, but thankfully, it looks like Howard made the cut this time around, as he does indeed cameo in Avengers: Endgame and you can check out a screenshot of his appearance down below.
Yes, your eyes do not deceive you, that’s Howard the Duck there, standing alongside the other heroes as he arrives to lend a hand in the epic final fight for the universe alongside the Avengers and their allies. It’s a quick, blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cameo, but for fans of the character, it should be enough to put a smile on their face.
Unfortunately, we don’t get to see anything more of him, but with Marvel planning to give Howard his very own TV show in the near future, we can all rest easy knowing that we’ll get to catch back up with the character in the near future. And until then, we’re just happy that he made the cut for Avengers: Endgame.
Now that Avengers: Endgame is out in theaters, fans will be turning their attention more than ever to the next era of the superhero saga, and in particular, many will be wondering how Marvel Studios plans to make use of their newly acquired Fox characters.
So far, Kevin Feige and his team have remained fairly tight-lipped on the matter. In a recent interview with Variety, however, actress Karen Gillan revealed which X-Men character she’d most like to see join the MCU:
“Mystique! So that we can talk about having blue prosthetics on all the time.”
Nebula aside, it’s true that Fox’s X-Men universe practically has a monopoly on blue-skinned comic book characters these days. At the moment, the role of Mystique is being handled by Jennifer Lawrence, who’s previously expressed her distaste for the blue paint she has to wear in her role. Indeed, even Gillan can look at Lawrence’s makeup process and feel that her own prosthetics aren’t so bad:
“I truthfully would watch the behind-the-scenes videos of her getting her makeup done while I was getting my makeup done to make me feel like it wasn’t so bad. I was like, ‘Well, look at what she went through! This is only from the neck up.’
“It’s just a feeling of like claustrophobia … because I’m completely enclosed, it’s a second skin that’s glued to me, it’s not painted. It’s like a skin, and it’s all over. So I can’t really move my face very much. It’s a weird sensation. It’s one that isn’t the nicest of sensations, but it does look really cool and it does help with the character. … I think it’s keeping me from overacting!”
Gillan may not be particularly comfortable under all those prosthetics, but the recent Avengers: Endgame suggests that she isn’t finished with the franchise just yet. In particular, it’s implied that Nebula will return for the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which reportedly starts filming in 2021.
As for when we might see the first X-Men in the MCU, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige recently told io9 that it will be “a very long time.” In fact, the producer claimed that Marvel’s next five years had already been mapped out before the Disney/Fox merger came into effect. But while the inevitable reboot of the mutant saga could still be a good few years away, we can expect to see Lawrence in her Mystique makeup one last time when Dark Phoenix hits theaters on June 7th.
HBO’s final season of Game of Thrones is in the midst of its run, and a Belgian designer took the opportunity to reimagine the show’s title sequence in the style of another of the network’s big shows, Westworld
“Westerosworld” does two cool things: it takes the look and stylings of Westworld’s opening credits — minimalist white designs and figures being constructed with advanced 3D printers — and changes that over to things like dragons, the house flags, the Night King, and the Iron Throne, with a hint of color accenting them. The video also takes Game of Thrones’ iconic theme song, and reimagines it in the same style, thanks to composer Brandon Chapman, who posted the track a year ago on Soundcloud, and which seems to have inspired the...
