Zack Snyder Reportedly Wants To Direct A New Lord Of The Rings Movie

Fans of both J.R.R. Tolkien’s expansive lore and Peter Jackson’s epic six-film movie series collectively lost their sh*t earlier this week when it was announced that Warner Bros. had given the green light to a brand new animated feature film based on The Lord of the Rings.

The War Of Rohirrim has been confirmed to exist in the same continuity as Jackson’s sextet, with animation veteran Kenji Kamiyama directing from a script by The Dark Crystal: Resistance duo Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, and Jackson’s Middle-earth co-writer Phillipa Boyens is on board as a creative consultant.

Clearly, WB were casting envious glances in the direction of Amazon’s $465 million episodic adaptation and decided to use their control of the motion picture rights to fast-track their own new project into development. As The Lord of the Rings surges back into the public consciousness once again, insider Daniel Richtman has named Zack Snyder as someone interested in directing a Tolkien epic, but unsurprisingly that’s all the tipster has to say on the matter.

As well as being a frustratingly vague statement, there’s also the Warner Bros.-sized elephant in the room, after the studio cut their fifteen-year ties with the filmmaker, leading to a little bit of thinly veiled mud-slinging in the press from both parties. Without any additional details to provide context or background as to why Snyder wants to helm LotR, what it would be about or even whether it’s intended as live-action or animation, the opaqueness of Richtman’s information means that it’s best not to read too far into it for now, especially when there are many more scenarios at play right now stopping Zack Snyder directing Lord of the Rings than enabling him.

Discovery Reportedly Supports Restoring The SnyderVerse

Following one of the biggest corporate mergers in history, there’s inevitably going to be a lot of upheaval and uncertainty in the early days of the freshly-named Warner Bros. Discovery conglomerate, which now has a wide-ranging multimedia empire that is arguably only second to the all-powerful Disney in the sheer breadth of its reach.

Of course, nobody cares much about in-depth boardroom machinations, fans just want to know if they’re getting the SnyderVerse back. CEO David Zaslav is hardly going to walk into his brand new office, immediately pick up the phone and extend an olive branch to Zack Snyder, though, especially when he’s said to be a financially and commercially-driven presence, and the filmmaker’s trio of DCEU blockbusters cost over a billion dollars to produce, market and distribute, only to return a net profit of just over $150 million.

However, according to a new leak, which admittedly comes from Reddit so do with that information what you will, Discovery are in support of the SnyderVerse because they liked the director’s films. The scuttlebutt doesn’t elaborate what ‘Discovery’ entails when it’s a huge company that employs thousands of people across all sectors, so it’s broad to just assume that everyone’s given the Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice director’s vision two thumbs up.

It’s been clear for a long time that talk of the SnyderVerse isn’t going anywhere, and to be frank it’s all getting a little tiresome at this point with a new rumor cropping up almost daily, and it would be nice for whoever winds up in charge of making that decision to put the talk to bed once and for all at some point in the near future and give everyone a definitive yay or nay.
