First reactions to Steven Spielberg’s ‘West Side Story’ arrive online

Remaking one of the all-time great musicals is nothing if not a risky gambit given the original’s monolithic stature in the genre, but Steven Spielberg has more than earned the right to do whatever he wants, and what he wanted to do was update West Side Story.

Update might be the wrong word when the latest version is still set in the 1950s, but the legendary filmmaker will be utilizing plenty of modern techniques to put his own stamp on an undisputed classic. Very few talents would even contemplate the idea of mounting a brand new adaptation of a movie that won eleven Academy Awards from twelve nominations 60 years ago, but this is Spielberg we’re talking about.

A spectacular Yuletide flop is rebounding on Disney Plus

On paper, a $120 million fantasy blockbuster produced by Disney that had staked out a prime November release date seems like a slam dunk, especially when you factor in a stacked ensemble that included Keira Knightley, Helen Mirren, Morgan Freeman, Richard E. Grant and more.

Throw in a trio of established talents tackling the project, which saw three-time Academy Award nominee Lasse Hallström share a directorial credit with Captain America: The First Avenger and Jumanji‘s Joe Johnston after the latter helmed 32 days of reshoots with pages that were rewritten by Oscar-winning Spotlight scribe Tom McCarthy, and there was surely no other option for The Nutcracker and the Four Realms other than success.

‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ producer not bothered by all the leaks

As soon as Spider-Man: No Way Home was given an official title and a multiversal premise, the floodgates to the rumor mill were well and truly opened, and we’ve now reached a point where barely a day goes by without purported plot information, surprise cameos or spoilers being widely shared online.

That’s par for the course when we’re talking about one of the year’s most hotly-anticipated titles, and as is always the case, there’s going to be an element of truth buried somewhere among the raft of unfounded speculation. However, longtime Sony producer Amy Pascal doesn’t seem too bothered.

Cyberpunk ‘Zorro’ reboot lands a writer and director

It’s been sixteen years since we last saw Zorro in live-action, when Martin Campbell reunited with Antonio Banderas and Catherine Zeta-Jones to deliver a subpar sequel to the gloriously entertaining 1998 swashbuckler.

That hasn’t been for a lack of trying, though, with countless reinventions of the iconic character having been touted in the interim. Gael García Bernal was once attached to headline Jonás Cuarón’s near-future Z, while Robert Rodriguez and Sofa Vergara are developing an episodic series for NBC.

A Gerard Butler bomb swims to the surface on streaming

Much like fellow genre stalwarts Liam Neeson, Denzel Washington and Jason Statham, any action thriller that comes bearing Gerard Butler’s name attached is destined to find a new lease of life on streaming, regardless of what the critics think.

Essentially the four top dogs of mid budget running and gunning, the quartet have seen a laundry list of their respective back catalogues trouble the Top 10 on all of the major platforms, with one of the weakest efforts from Butler’s filmography the latest to resurface on Netflix, as per FlixPatrol.

‘Malignant’ fans are suggesting hilarious titles for a sequel

The success of A Quiet Place Part II, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It and Halloween Kills showed that R-rated horror could thrive at the box office even in the midst of a pandemic, but the caveat is that all three of those titles were sequels to hugely popular originals, or the latest installment in an enduring franchise.

James Wan’s Malignant wasn’t quite so fortunate, despite being the first completely original project from one of the genre’s most popular filmmakers in a decade. The absolutely insane supernatural romp failed to recoup the $40 million budget from theaters, but it’s instantly found a whole new lease of life as a cult favorite based on nothing more than the fact it’s completely and utterly deranged.

‘Spider-Man’ fans hoping a ‘Venom’ crossover movie is on the way

Sony may have backtracked slightly after Amy Pascal exuberantly outlined that more Spider-Man movies starring Tom Holland were on the way, downgrading the official announcement to a ‘we’re definitely planning on it but nothing is official yet’ kind of deal, but that hasn’t stopped fans from speculating already.

Presumably, the second Spidey trilogy will take the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Peter Parker off to college, but there’s every chance we’ll be seeing him show up in a standalone Sony project or two. After all, the studio wouldn’t have rebranded its entire franchise as Sony’s Spider-Man Universe and broke the internet with Venom: Let There Be Carnage‘s post-credits scene if there wasn’t at least a semi-solid plan in place.

A festive classic romances its way up the Netflix charts

A quick glance at the Netflix most-watched list makes it perfectly and abundantly clear that the countdown to Christmas is on, with countless festive favorites experiencing their annual resurgence in popularity.

Of course, not all of the feature-length Yuletide cheer needs to lean heavily into tinsel, mistletoe, Santa Claus, tinsel, reindeer and all the rest of the festive trappings, and one of the most enduringly popular examples is Nancy Myers’ The Holiday, which uses Christmas as a backdrop to the story and not the driving force behind it.

Sony producer explains how the studio plans to juggle multiple Marvel universes

The raft of Marvel characters at Sony’s disposal haven’t been used to their fullest potential, and we’re even including the crown jewel of Spider-Man in that discussion.

Heavy-handed studio interference compromised Sam Raimi’s threequel and saw him walk away from a fourth installment, while any plans for a rapidly-expanding shared mythology built out from The Amazing Spider-Man were shelved when it became the lowest-grossing and worst-reviewed entry to date.

A threequel you never knew existed is a surprise streaming hit

Sam Mendes’ directorial career got off to a phenomenal start after American Beauty raked in $356 million at the box office and won five Academy Awards from eight nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director. He followed it up with the acclaimed crime thriller Road to Perdition, but third time did not mark the charm for the filmmaker.

Jarhead was a blackly comic military drama based on the memoir of the same name by Anthony Swofford, who was played in the movie by Jake Gyllenhaal. A middling critical response and underwhelming commercial performance marked the first setback Mendes had faced, but he’s since rebounded and then some.

Tom Holland teases violent fight scenes in ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’

Given that he’s a self-appointed ‘friendly’ neighborhood superhero, we’ve never really seen Spider-Man lose control of his emotions and beat his enemies into a bloody pulp, with the arguable exception of Sam Raimi’s original when Tobey Maguire effectively pushed Uncle Ben’s killer out of a window to his death.

When you factor in the staunchly family-friendly nature of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, at least until Deadpool 3 eventually arrives, then it would be foolish to expect fresh-faced Tom Holland to go full John Wick on the myriad of antagonists he’s set to come up against in No Way Home.

A bruising crime thriller refuses to budge from HBO Max’s most-watched list

David Cronenberg has never been regarded as anything approaching a mainstream or accessible filmmaker, and it’s telling that one of his directorial efforts to strike a chord with critics and audiences for being relatively easy to digest by his standards is still an often-harrowing crime story.

Viggo Mortensen landed an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor after fully dedicating himself to his performance as Nikolai Luzhin in Eastern Promises, the ruthless and enigmatic enforcer who has strong ties to one of London’s most notorious and feared crime families.

MGM addresses rumors that ‘No Time to Die’ is losing money

Under most circumstances, it would be ludicrous to think that a movie to have earned over $750 million at the box office would be in danger of losing money, but that’s exactly what we’ve been hearing about No Time to Die.

Even before the 25th installment in the James Bond franchise had been released, we’d heard reports that it needed to bring in at least $900 million simply to turn a profit, which is about as close to an impossibility as you can get in the midst of a pandemic.

A dystopian horror is a multi-platform streaming success

James DeMonaco’s claims that The Forever Purge would mark the final installment in the franchise didn’t hold water for very long, with Jason Blum admitting that he’d love to see the series continue, while Frank Grillo revealed he was set to return as Leo Barnes.

While the creator of the property hasn’t stepped behind the camera to direct since Election Year, DeMonaco was open when it came to saying if he’s to take the reins on The Purge again, it has to be with Grillo in the lead or else he’s not doing it. However, the sixth installment is poised to feature a ten-year time jump, leaving The Forever Purge as the final near-future installment with direct ties to the first four.
