Netflix Has Added A Bunch Of Great Hidden Gems This Year

In 2020, Netflix is almost a utility as much as an entertainment service. Many of us have spent months inside in lockdown staring at our televisions, being at least thankful that the fountain of content they provide never seems to run dry. But despite the massive subscriber numbers, there are some things that fall through the cracks. Now, What’s On Netflix has identified some of the best stuff you might not’ve seen, and I’ve got to admit, they’ve got good taste.

First up is Giri/Haji, a Netflix/BBC co-production about a detective from Tokyo searching for his missing brother in the UK. The first season has a solid 100% rating on the Tomatometer (and a 93% audience rating), with critics describing it as fascinating, adventurous and incredibly smart. There are just eight episodes in the first season and it sounds like a wild ride. I hadn’t actually heard of this until now, so it’s definitely going on my to-watch list.

Then there’s Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts, an animated series by Radford Sechrist based on his webcomic Kipo. This also received critical adulation, with many calling it the best Netflix Original aimed at children they’ve ever produced. The anime-inspired show is stuffed full of imaginative designs, beautiful scenery and snappy writing. To be honest, it’s as entertaining for adults as it is for children.

Giri/Haji

Then there’s thriller The Coldest Game. This stars Bill Pullman and is set during the Cuban Missile Crisis. There’s weirdly little about this movie online and even the film’s Wikipedia is pretty sparse, devoting almost as much space to the producer dying in a boating accident as it does to the movie itself. Still, it seems to be well-regarded and worth unearthing.

Medici, a Netflix historical drama, is also worth checking out. This three-season Italian co-production concluded its story not too long ago and provides political intrigue, a powerfully sexy cast, great costumes and gorgeous scenery.

Finally, there’s unjustly overlooked anime show Drifting Dragons, about airship crews on the hunt for dragons. The trailer showcases beautiful animation and a steampunk aesthetic (reminding me a lot of the Panzer Dragoon series of games). While I assume this is popular in Japan, it doesn’t seem to have broken through domestically, even with anime fans. Let’s hope it, and all these other titles, find an audience on Netflix.

Google confirms new Nest smart speaker with official photo and video

Google has responded to the inadvertent reveal of a new Nest smart speaker through regulatory filings by, well, confirming its existence. The company just sent The Verge an official photo of the device, referring to it only as “what the Nest team is working on from home.”

The speaker looks somewhere between the pillowy Nest Mini and the larger Google Home Max, with a similar ability to stand vertically. The picture shows it wrapped in a blue fabric, while the photos from the filing depicted a more neutral grey design.

Google also shared a brief teaser video that shows the speaker being used in the background, including a pink-ish color variant.

Idris Elba’s Odds On Becoming The Next James Bond Have Increased

No Time to Die, which is set to hit theaters in November this year, will feature Daniel Craig’s final performance as the world’s most famous spy, James Bond. For long, James Norton was thought to follow in his footsteps, but now the tables may have turned in favor of someone else.

According to a report published by the British outlet Express, Idris Elba currently has a ten to one chance of landing the part, which is pretty high compared to some of the other actors he’s competing against. Speaking about the odds, Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said:

“Idris Elba has been there or thereabout at the head of the Bond betting in the last few years and we’re not yet ruling him out for the role.”

Elba’s meteoric rise to fame makes him a strong contestant for the role. In the past few years, he’s starred in the TV show Luther as well as film franchises like ThorPacific Rim and Fast & Furious. If chosen, he would become the first black actor to portray the secret agent on screen. Given how the civil rights protests in response to the death of George Floyd have increased pressure on Hollywood to promote diversity, it’s not unthinkable that execs may gravitate toward him.

Chances that we may see the first-ever female Bond are higher than ever before, too. As reported by Express, the odds of a female performer being cast for the role are currently twelve to one.

Based on a series of novels, the Bond franchise is one of the oldest and most profitable in all of entertainment history. With 26 movies made across more than half a century, the character’s narrative potential is all but inexhaustible. Like the British television series Doctor Who, the franchise gets periodically rebooted as every decade and a half or so, its lead is replaced by a younger actor capable of speaking to younger generations.

Do you think Idris Elba would make a good James Bond, though? Let us know in the comments section down below.

Endgame Directors Close To Making New Movie With Robert Downey Jr.

In a recent interview with ComicBook.com, Joe Russo revealed he is looking to do another project with Iron Man star Robert Downey Jr., and promises fans it won’t be long until this happens.

Together with his brother Anthony, Joe Russo directed monumental blockbusters like Captain America: The Winter SoldierInfinity War and last year’s Endgame, which saw Downey Jr. portray the snarky superhero for what appeared to be the last time.

Although the Russos may have bid farewell to the original Avengers cast within the MCU itself, that does not mean they won’t be working with them in the future. Far from it, the siblings have already collaborated with prominent Marvel actors on several projects. They recently released the action film Extraction led by Chris Hemsworth, and are currently working on a crime drama called Cherry, which stars Tom Holland in the lead.

Working with Marvel actors makes sense not only from a business perspective, but a practical one, too. Of course, names like Hemsworth and Holland draw in millions of viewers, but their previous experience with the Russos also makes the filmmaking process a lot easier.

As such, it seems only a matter of time before the siblings’ production company, AGBO Films, will turn out a picture featuring Downey Jr. himself. Since his role as Tony Stark, the acclaimed actor is yet to appear in a noteworthy picture.

When asked whether he discusses the good old Marvel days with his actors, Joe Russo said he wants to, but notes there often simply isn’t time for daydreaming on set.  “Maybe over a beer when we’re laughing about the time when said something happened,” he explained.

As for working with Downey Jr., he told the outlet the following:

“We’d love to do something with Robert Downey, we’re talking about a few things with him. There’s another project for talking to [Chris] Evans about, there’s two more projects we’re talking to Hemsworth about. There’s something else we’re talking to Holland about. We love our family, our Marvel family. We all spend a lot of time together, had a lot of laughs together. We enjoy working together and that’s a priority for my brother and I. We have to love the creative aspects of a project as much as we love the people we’re going to go work with on it so that everyone has great quality of life.”

Would you be interested in seeing the Russos produce a non-Marvel film starring Robert Downey Jr., though? Let us know in the comments!

Avengers: Endgame Director Says Tom Holland’s Performance In Cherry Is Oscar Worthy

Cherry, an upcoming crime drama starring Spider-Man actor Tom Holland, will represent a stark change of tone from his Marvel output. The film follows a PTSD-afflicted army medic who turns to robbing banks so that he can fund his opioid addiction. Like I said, stark.

That same line highlighting the difference between this and the Marvel movies is also applicable to directors Anthony and Joe Russo. And according to Joe, Holland’s performance in the new pic is a knock-out, with the filmmaker going as far as to say it could be “Oscar worthy.”

Here’s what he told ET about it:

“Count me on the list of folks who are ready to start the awards campaign today. I think everyone will be blown away when they get a chance to see the depth and versatility he brings to Cherry. He is a generationally talented actor.

I think it’s an Oscar worthy performance. I think he is absolutely amazing in it. He gives a gut wrenching performance. What he does to himself emotionally and physically is unbelievable. We haven’t seen an actor in a role like this in a while. The movie spans a decade, complemented by an epic performance. And one that I certainly hope will be in the Oscar conversation.”

Russo was also asked when we might expect to see the film, to which he replied they’re aiming to release it this fall. Naturally, with the “circumstances” as he put it, that’s not a done deal, particularly as it still has no official release date. But fingers crossed fall will be a correct estimate.

Now onto the performance in question. It’s hard to get more praiseworthy than positing one as worthy of an Academy Award. Holland’s role certainly sounds intense, too. Running through it again, he plays a bank-robbing PTSD-afflicted drug addicted. Crikey.

This ought to be his first chance to show audiences his range as an actor, too. Not to do him a disservice – he’s young, and his credits since hitting the mainstream have largely been in family-friendly affairs. Case in point: just check out the seemingly identical teenaged dorks/heroes in animated pair Onward and Spies in Disguise. Talk about simultaneous invention.

Looking forward to seeing Tom Holland put his acting chops to the test in Cherry? Drop a comment with your hopes for the film below. He’s been given quite the billing.
