Tesla has introduced a pair of new safety features for its cars, which are designed to stop you from drifting out of your lane. Lane Departure Avoidance and Emergency Lane Departure Avoidance are both designed to stop common causes of accidents that can occur while drivers aren’t using Autopilot, Tesla says.
Lane Departure Avoidance will alert you if you’re exiting your lane without a turn signal when your hands aren’t on the wheel. If this happens too much while you’re using traffic-aware cruise control, then the system will eventually turn on your hazard lights and automatically slow down the car to 15 miles below either the speed limit or your current set speed. This feature can be turned on or off at will, and works between speeds...
When Facebook told me this morning that it would ban Alex Jones and Infowars from its platform, my initial reaction was one of deja vu. Haven’t we been through this before? Indeed, it was nine months ago that Facebook first acted to remove Jones’ public page, after previously suspending him.
But banning a Jones page and removing Jones’ network are different things. And despite Facebook’s move — along with many other tech platforms — to remove his influence, Jones continued to thrive. It was only in February when Facebook found another 22 pages related to him and his businesses. And while his diminished reach has certainly limited his ability to attract new followers and profit from vile conspiracy theories, he has continued to have a...

The unannounced Google Pixel 3A XL has been spotted at a Best Buy in Springfield, Ohio. Android Police reports that both the “Purple-ish” and “Just Black” models of the phone were on display, and that their packaging confirms previous rumors that the Pixel 3A XL will have a 6-inch display. No pricing appeared to be visible for the handsets.
The sighting is the latest in a string of leaks about Google’s unannounced mid-range handsets. Earlier this week the YouTube channel This is Tech Today posted images of the retail packaging of the non-XL Pixel 3A, which confirmed that it would have a 5.6-inch screen. The video also claimed that the 64GB model of the Pixel 3A and the Pixel 3A XL would start at $399 and $479 respectively.

Thursday brought the tragic news that Peter Mayhew, most known for playing everyone’s favorite Wookie Chewbacca in the Star Wars saga for nearly 40 years, died earlier this week on April 30th at the age of 74. The British actor’s passing has been met with an outpouring of grief on social media, with his colleagues in the industry adding to the messages by paying their respect.
Disney CEO Robert Iger is the latest to offer his condolences. In a tweet shared this evening, Iger wrote on behalf of The Walt Disney Company:
“The @WaltDisneyCo mourns the loss of our beloved #chewbacca portrayer, #PeterMayhew. Peter was larger than life in so many ways…a gentle giant playing a gentle giant. Rest in peace.”
Iger’s comments about Mayhew being a “gentle giant” echo the words that his co-star Mark Hamill also shared today on Twitter. Hamill and Mayhew were close friends who had known each other since production on A New Hope in 1977, so the actor was understandably cut up. “I’m grateful for the memories we shared & I’m a better man for just having known him,” Hamill wrote. “Thanks Pete.”
After the original Star Wars, Mayhew reprised his role in both The Empire Strikes Back (1981) and Return of the Jedi (1983). He was one of only a small handful of stars of the Original Trilogy to return for the prequel movies, too, as he got to suit up as Chewie again in 2005’s Revenge of the Sith. After Disney purchased the franchise this decade, Mayhew gave his final performance as Chewbacca in 2015’s The Force Awakens. He shared the role in the movie with Joonas Suotamo, who’s since taken over the iconic part full-time.
Chewbacca will next appear in this December’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, and we can imagine the movie being dedicated to the memory of Peter Mayhew. Rest in peace, sir.
It’s a sad day for Star Wars fans around the world, as we learned just a few hours ago that original Chewbacca actor Peter Mayhew had passed away at the age of 74.
The news was revealed by the actor’s official Twitter account, which shared the following message:
“The family of Peter Mayhew, with deep love and sadness, regrets to share the news that Peter has passed away. He left us the evening of April 30, 2019 with his family by his side in his North Texas home.”
As fans will know, Mayhew first suited up as the beloved Wookiee in 1977’s A New Hope, and reprised the role for all of Chewbaccca’s live-action appearances up to and including The Force Awakens. Following that, Joonas Suotamo took over, but Mayhew remained heavily involved in the franchise right up to his death, and holds a special place in many hearts, including Harrison Ford’s.
Yes, the Han Solo actor was obviously very close with Mayhew and in a statement released earlier today, the legendary star shared the following about his good friend:
“Peter Mayhew was a kind and gentle man, possessed of great dignity and noble character. These aspects of his own personality, plus his wit and grace, he brought to Chewbacca. We were partners in film and friends in life for over 30 years and I loved him. He invested his soul in the character and brought great pleasure to the Star Wars audience.”
Ford added, “Chewbacca was an important part of the success of the films we made together. He knew how important the fans of the franchise were to it’s continued success and he was devoted to them. I and millions of others will never forget Peter and what he gave us all. My thoughts are with his dear wife Angie and his children. Rest easy, my dear friend…”
Mayhew and Ford were last seen on screen together in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which saw them return to their roles many decades after Return of the Jedi. It was a swan song for both of the stars as well, and certainly gave them a memorable last outing in the franchise.
Speaking of which, the Skywalker Saga will carry on – and conclude – this December with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. And while it’s terribly tragic that Mayhew won’t be around to see it, he’ll surely be in the hearts of viewers all around the world as they sit down in theaters to watch the film.
RIP Peter Mayhew, you’ll be missed.
