Taiwan plans to ban major Chinese video streaming services

Photo by Sam Byford / The Verge

Taiwan is planning to lock out video streaming services from Chinese tech giants Baidu and Tencent. While such services are ostensibly already illegal in the self-governing island republic, Baidu’s iQiyi and Tencent’s WeTV currently operate under a legal loophole that allowed them to partner with local companies. Now, Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs says that Taiwanese companies won’t be able to provide these services as of September 3rd.

The move shows how Chinese tech companies are facing increasing difficulty in pushing into other markets as geopolitical tensions continue to rise. President Trump has moved to ban Tencent’s WeChat and ordered ByteDance to divest itself of TikTok’s US operations, while India blocked dozens more...

A Forgotten Charlize Theron Film Hits Hulu Next Month

Charlize Theron occupies a rare space in Hollywood because not only is she widely recognized as one of the finest actresses of her generation, having won an Academy Award, Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice Award for her transformative performance in Monster and scored further nominations from the same bodies for her work in North Country and Bombshell, but the 45 year-old is also regarded as one of cinema’s premiere action stars.

Not a lot of talents can pull off the jump between critically-acclaimed dramas and action-packed blockbusters, but Theron made it look easy in the likes of Mad Max: Fury Road, Atomic Blonde, The Fate of the Furious and most recently Netflix’s smash hit The Old Guard. You can fully understand why she was furious about being offered the role of Wonder Woman’s mother when she could quite easily have played the title character herself.

aeon flux

That being said, not all of her entries in the action genre have been home runs, and one of her more forgotten efforts is set to land on Hulu next month. Aeon Flux had decent pedigree, with Theron headlining the 2005 live-action adaptation of the cult favorite animated series, with rising star Karyn Kusama behind the camera in what was her follow-up to breakout feature-length debut Girlfight.

However, the highly-stylized movie didn’t find much love with critics and holds a weak 9% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and it didn’t fare much better with audiences either after earning just $52m at the box office against a $65m budget. Theron did the best she could with the material, but there were far too many issues in the story department to salvage Aeon Flux, and it’ll be interesting to see if her recent successes will result in the movie finding a new audience when it arrives on Hulu.

Black Widow Listed On VOD Service, Hinting At Disney Plus Release

The upcoming Mulan has set a major precedent, what with it opening both in limited theaters and on Disney Plus through a new premium Premier Access level. Everyone’s now wondering whether Black Widow will be given the same treatment when it arrives this November, when the health crisis and people’s worries about piling into cinemas probably won’t be that different from now. Disney still has yet to comment on this, but a new scrap of evidence may point to the Scarlett Johansson vehicle going up on streaming alongside its theatrical run.

Video on demand service Movies Anywhere has Black Widow listed on its site, as first noticed by MCU Cosmic. There isn’t any artwork attached to the listing, so it’s possible it was just automatically generated as the film would have come out on digital around this time if it had hit cinemas back in May as expected. However, the listing cites the movie’s release as November 6th, suggesting it isn’t just a holdover from its original schedule.

This is far from conclusive proof, then, but it is something to add to the pile of reasons why it’s likely Disney is planning on dropping Black Widow on Disney Plus in November. Disney CEO Bob Chapek did say when Mulan‘s streaming release was announced that it was a one-off situation, but there’s every possibility that the studio is simply holding off on announcing anything further until they get the numbers back after the live-action remake arrives in early September. If it’s a hit with subscribers, then expect an official announcement about BW coming to D+.

There could be some price variation, but presumably the Marvel movie would cost users an additional $30 on top of the subscription fee, like Mulan. A lot of folks have complained about the hefty surcharge for that film, but many have also said that they wouldn’t mind paying it for Black Widow instead. For now, we’ll just have to sit tight and see how this situation develops, but in the meantime, let us know if you want the pic to land on D+ or not in the comments section below.

ZTE has already announced that it plans to launch the first mass-produced 5G-enabled smartphone with an under-display camera in China next month, and now the company has shared new images that give us a better understanding of what that phone’s screen might actually look like (via Dutch website Tweakers).

In the render at the top of this post, you can see that the phone, which will be called the ZTE Axon 20 5G, has no visible camera up top — no hole punch, no notch. The render was shared by ZTE’s president of mobile devices Ni Fei on Chinese social media network Weibo.

And in this next render, also shared by Fei on Weibo, you can get an idea of what that no-camera screen might look like while it’s powered on. It looks pretty clean, if...

Thundercats is coming to Hulu tomorrow and I am on a major nostalgia trip

Image: Hulu

Thundercats ho! Hulu has locked down the rights to stream Thundercats on its service starting tomorrow. This includes both the iconic original series from the 1980s, plus the 2011 reboot. The kid within me is screaming with pure joy.

I was born in 1995, so, unfortunately, I did not have the pleasure of watching the original Thundercats cartoon when it aired between 1985 and 1989. Fortunately, in 2002, Cartoon Network’s programming block Toonami did air it, and I remember watching as a seven-year-old kid, stumbling upon the cartoon after viewing a promo and thinking to myself “wow, this show looks cool.” The next time it aired, I made sure to tune in.

The intro grabbed me right away: it was catchy, colorful, and hearing Lion-O screaming,...

A Hilarious Forgotten Ryan Reynolds Movie Hits Netflix Next Month

Earlier today, Netflix announced their full line-up of new movies and TV shows for September, and it’s a doozy. Comprising a ton of originals, beloved films, bonafide classics and more, there should be something for everyone on the way next month.

But among heavy hitters like the Back to the Future trilogy, Grease, The Muppets and more is a movie called Waiting… from back in 2005. If you’ve never heard of it, we don’t blame you, as it kind of flew under the radar upon its release. But this forgotten Ryan Reynolds-starring pic is actually a lot better than many would have you think, and it’ll be available to stream on Netflix beginning on September 23rd.

For those unfamiliar, it follows “several young employees at Shenaniganz restaurant who collectively stave off boredom and adulthood with their antics.” It didn’t exactly set the box office on fire – though it did make $18.6 million off a $3 million budget – and critics didn’t take too kindly to it, but it certainly has its fans as its fairly decent IMDb score of 6.8 and Rotten Tomatoes audience score of 75% will show you. In fact, you could even say it’s become something of a cult classic.

Waiting...

Is it Reynolds’ best movie? Not by a long shot, but fans of the actor will surely appreciate this early effort from him and he’s just as witty, funny and entertaining in the film as we’ve come to expect. Not to mention it’s always nice to see a pre-A-list Ryan Reynolds, as it took him quite a while to truly establish himself as a bonafide leading man.

Of course, the Dedpool star is now one of the biggest names in the business and box office royalty, continuing to deliver hit after hit. But for a glimpse of him earlier on in his career, be sure to catch Waiting… when it hits Netflix next month.

Ryan Reynolds Apologizes To Dwayne Johnson After Selling His Gin Company

Ryan Reynolds is a man who likes to keep himself busy. He currently has no less than 10 new films in various stages of development and can often be seen donating his time – and money – to various charities. But as if all that wasn’t enough, he’s also something of a businessman.

One of his most well-known ventures is Aviation Gin, which the actor has a very large stake in and now, he’s set to earn a small fortune from it as the company has sold to Diageo, a “British multinational beverage alcohol company” who acquired the business for an upfront payment of $335 million. Not only that, but depending on sales, the Deadpool star could be set to make an additional $275 million from the deal.

It’s not all sunshine and rainbows, though, as Reynolds has now had to offer up an apology to Dwayne Johnson, George Clooney, Blake Lively and more thanks to a little misunderstanding.

Ryan Reynolds

You see, the actor has set up his email at Aviation Gin with a rather hilarious out of office message, expressing regret for telling several people to “go f–k themselves.” See for yourself below:

“Thanks for your email. I am currently out of the office but will still be very hard at work selling Aviation Gin. For quite a long time, it seems,” Reynolds began in the message.

“In related news, I just learned what an ‘earn out’ is… And I’d like to take this opportunity to apologize to everyone I told to go f–k themselves in the last 24 hours. My lawyers just explained how long it takes to achieve an ‘earn out’… so… turns out I’m not as George Clooney as I thought,” he continued, likely referencing Diageo’s $1 billion acquisition of Casamigos, Clooney’s co-founded tequila brand, from 2017.

“The point is, to those listed below, I’m sorry… and I’ll indeed be needing your help in the coming months and years. Thanks in advance!” Reynolds’ added in his note, before concluding with the list: “Mom, Blake, Peter, Diageo CEO, The Rock, George Clooney, Southern Glazer’s, Betty White, TGI Friday’s, Baxter, Calisthenics, AMC Theaters, Total Wine, The Number 8, Don Saladino, Darden, The Head of Alfredo Garcia, Soothing Lavender Eye Pillows.”

Of course, this is all in good fun and perfectly in line with the cheeky and often hilarious nature of Reynolds’ antics in every aspect of his life. He’s one of the most consistently entertaining actors in Hollywood both on and off screen and once again, he’s making sure everyone’s getting a good laugh even as the world continues to be a dark and depressing place.

As far as his cinematic career goes, though, you can catch Ryan Reynolds next in Free Guy, which is currently scheduled for release on December 11th. That is, assuming it isn’t pushed back again due to COVID-19.

With titles like Battletoads and Grounded, Xbox Game Pass is inching closer to becoming like Netflix

Battletoads.

You probably know the feeling: you set out to find something new on Netflix, but end up spending more time browsing than actually watching. There’s just so much there that it can be hard to make a choice. Recently I’ve been having the same issue every time I turn on my Xbox.

Game Pass, Microsoft’s subscription service, is much like Netflix and other video streaming services in that, for a monthly fee, you have access to a broad range of experiences. If you follow Microsoft’s marketing, you’ll know that Game Pass is a place for the company’s big first-party games. With a subscription you can play every Halo or Gears of War title. When Halo Infinite is available next year, you won’t need to buy it — the game will debut on Game Pass at...

Los Angeles settles Weather Channel lawsuit, lets it keep selling location data to advertisers

Weather Channel app for iOS redesign

Los Angeles has settled its lawsuit against the operator of The Weather Channel app. The city filed litigation against the company in 2019, alleging that the app misled millions of people into granting access to their personal location data and sold that data to third parties.

While IBM is celebrating this moment by calling those original claims “baseless” in a statement to The Verge, it sounds like they were largely true — since the only thing the settlement requires is for The Weather Channel to proactively warn users that yes, your location data is for sale.

As part of the settlement, the app’s operator, TWC Product and Technology LLC, and the app’s owner, IBM Corporation, have agreed to revise the location-tracking disclosure...

Facebook is making Oculus’s worst feature unavoidable

Image: Oculus VR

Yesterday, Facebook infuriated the VR world, announcing plans to require a Facebook login for future VR headsets. The decision broke an early promise from Oculus founder Palmer Luckey and was almost universally reviled online, with critics raising concerns about intrusive data collection, targeted advertising, and being forced to use a service they hated. On the Oculus subreddit, some users posted bitter memes about Farmville and data harvesting, while others swapped recommendations for other headsets. One posted a cartoon of Oculus as a sinking ship.

The truth is probably a lot less dire. Facebook-related boycotts fizzle all the time — when it acquired Oculus in 2014, Minecraft creator Markus “Notch” Persson furiously killed a deal to...
