Uber loses its London license as regulator cites a ‘pattern of failures’

Photo by Tom Warren / The Verge

London’s transport regulator, Transport for London (TfL), has refused to grant Uber a new license in the city. TfL had been extending Uber’s license to operate in London in recent months, after the ride sharing company lost its license in 2017. TfL originally revoked Uber’s license citing Uber’s approach to serious criminal offences, medical certificates, disclosure and barring checks, and the company’s use of its Greyball software that TfL said blocked regulatory bodies from gaining full access to Uber’s app for law enforcement duties.

TfL now says it has identified a “pattern of failures” by Uber, including breaches that placed passengers at risk. “Despite addressing some of these issues, TfL does not have confidence that similar...

Disney Signed A Contract With Indigenous Leaders Before Frozen 2

Disney has been consciously trying for more diversity in their animated features over the last decade. 2009 saw the first African-American Disney princess in Tiana, who appeared in The Princess and the Frog, and the studio has looked far and wide for inspiration beyond European fairytales.

Moana, with its Polynesian setting, was perhaps the most prominent, but Frozen included influences from the Sámi people who are indigenous to Scandinavia. There’s a flip side to this diversity, though, with some accusing Disney of cultural appropriation – taking a people’s culture and commodifying it to make a quick buck. Now, with Frozen 2, it seems they’ve tried to be one step ahead of the curve.

A big focus of the movie are the Northuldra people, who are inspired by the same Sámi – just as in the original Frozen. And according to Upworthy, Disney entered into a contract with the Sámi people to guarantee their culture and traditions would be represented accurately. The contract (which you can read in full here) affirms that the stories and iconography used in the movie remain the property of the Sámi, that the benefits of the film be shared with them and that Frozen 2 will treat their culture with respect.

With this in mind, Disney have agreed to release a dubbed version of Frozen 2 in a Sámi language, credited them for their cooperation in making the movie, made sure that Sámi representatives attended the premiere and that there will be a cross-learning initiative.

It’s a pretty damn comprehensive agreement and should benefit both parties. With Disney notoriously protective of their public image, I imagine we’ll see further contracts like this in the future. Here’s hoping that after a long history of rightly being accused of exploiting other people’s stories, Disney will keep these pledges in mind for their next projects.

Friday The 13th Legal Battle May Finally Be Over By Early 2020

A long-running legal dispute over the Friday the 13th franchise could finally be resolved next year after the announcement of an appeals date. We haven’t seen a new entry in the series since the reboot in 2009, with recent attempts at production complicated by who owns which rights to the brand name and characters. However, according to Bloody Disgusting, we may get a major legal decision in 2020 that could ease the way to another trip to Camp Crystal Lake.

The current battle is between original Friday the 13th screenwriter Victor Miller and director Sean S. Cunningham, with the former being granted sole US rights to his screenplay in a judge’s decision last year. A key part of this decision was a copyright ruling that’s affecting multiple properties, whereby the rights revert to the original author after a specific amount of time, something that may be causing a rush to reboot or add sequels to various series. While the Friday the 13th case has dragged on throughout this year, it now appears to be moving towards a new milestone.

Cunningham and company Horror Inc. are appealing the judge’s decision over Miller by re-iterating their claim that he was just a “writer-for-hire” at the time of the production, and therefore not eligible to be awarded the rights. Based on a tweet by lawyer and Friday the 13th Part III actor Larry Zerner, this argument is going to be formally looked at in early 2020.

What does this mean? Well, if last year’s decision is overturned, then Cunningham and Horror Inc. would regain the rights to the original screenplay.

Alternatively, if Miller wins again, Cunningham and co. may finally settle. Although this doesn’t necessarily mean we’ll be getting a new Friday the 13th movie anytime soon, it will remove the main legal headache that’s put the franchise on ice, as well as ease the problems affecting the video game of the same name. In any case, we’re hoping that everyone can come to an agreement in 2020 and Friday the 13th can be given (another) new beginning.

New Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker Photo Shows Off Elite Sith Troopers

Seeing as how it’s only a month away from release, Disney and Lucasfilm have wasted no time when it comes to promoting Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Just yesterday, a new TV spot began making the rounds, teasing an epic finale to the sequel trilogy while giving fans a quick look at some truly tense action sequences. Shortly afterward, Empire Magazine published a cover story focused on the franchise’s latest movie. The article in question is chock-full of juicy tidbits and info, along with a handful of never-before-seen promotional stills. One, in particular, shows off the sequel trilogy’s three heroes, while another gives us a glimpse at a new First Order enemy.

Over the past few years, we’ve seen plenty of Stormtroopers, from your typical run-of-the-mill grunts decked out in pearlescent white, to entirely new variants including Flametroopers and Snowtroopers. For The Rise of Skywalker, director J.J. Abrams and the rest of the film’s creative team are bringing us the Sith Trooper. Named after the ancient order of Force-users devoted to the dark side, this new type of Stormtrooper is completely decked out in red armor — a noticeable change from the white we’ve become so familiar with over the past few decades.

It’s not entirely clear if they are more formidable from their garden variety counterparts, but given their ominous name and striking armor color, we wouldn’t be entirely surprised to hear that these new baddies are considered the elite forces of the First Order. We’re curious, what’s your take on The Rise of Skywalker‘s newest enemy? Do you think the Sith Troopers are a bit too much of a departure from the vanilla variant, or do you dig their new taste in fashion? Be sure to let us know in the comments below!

Jared Harris Reportedly Returning As Moriarty In Sherlock Holmes 3

Robert Downey Jr. will soon return as the Great Detective for Sherlock Holmes 3, which will mark the first time he’s played the iconic role since 2011’s A Game of Shadows. Fans will remember that the sequel to the 2009 original tackled the famed face-off between Holmes and his nemesis Professor Moriarty. As they always do, the foes ended up toppling over the Reichenbach Falls to their apparent doom…before the super-sleuth was revealed to have survived.

It’s possible, though, that SH3 will add an extra sting into the tale. According to sources close to WGTC – the same ones who told us Marvel was developing a Ms. Marvel TV show, and that Robert Pattinson had beat out Nicholas Hoult for the Batman role – Moriarty is due to return in the movie. We’ve heard that Jared Harris will be coming back as the villain, with Moriarty also having survived the fall just like his enemy and secretly plotting his revenge.

Though a change from the original stories, in which the character only shows up once, Moriarty has been known to make a comeback in many screen versions of Sherlock Holmes in order to better utilize the compelling felon. If you’ll recall, BBC’s Sherlock memorably had Andrew Scott’s version fool everyone into thinking he had somehow survived shooting himself in the head with a series of pre-filmed videos released posthumously.

Alongside this news about Harris’ return, we’ve also discovered the identity of the central antagonist of SH3. With Holmes and Watson traveling to the US in the film, corrupt American businessman Senator Cornelius Guest will apparently be the detective’s latest foil. What’s more, the studio is said to be looking at Oscar Isaac for the part, though it’s unclear if he’s been formally contacted yet.

Sherlock Holmes 3, directed by Dexter Fletcher, has previously been given a December 2021 release date and is expected to start shooting next year. And while it’s important to remember that plans can always change before it goes in front of cameras, for the moment at least, Moriarty is fully expected to return.

Charlie’s Angels Crashes At The Box Office For Second Week In A Row

Disney’s massively-anticipated Frozen II dominated the box office this weekend after opening to a huge $127 million, which is a lot more money than the rest of the top ten managed to earn combined. No other movie stood a chance, with the overwhelming majority of audiences flocking to see the animated sequel, which spelled bad news for the rest of the titles in its wake, with Charlie’s Angels taking a particularly big hit.

Elizabeth Banks’ reboot has become something of a controversy magnet lately, with the outspoken actress/writer/producer/director claiming that everyone who saw Charlie’s Angels loved it, while also blaming the movie’s failure on everything from poor marketing to men’s apparent refusal to watch female-driven action franchises. Of course, she also took some shots at the comic book genre for good measure.

The signs weren’t looking good after Charlie’s Angels suffered a Friday-to-Friday second weekend drop of 69%, and this weekend’s box office numbers make for even more grim reading. The latest iteration of the brand is estimated to have earned just $3.175 million over the last three days, meaning that it’s failed to even crack $14 million domestically after ten days in release.

On a global scale, Charlie’s Angels is sitting at just $43.5 million, which isn’t even enough to recoup the $50 million budget. And that’s not even including marketing costs, so when all is said and done the movie’s going to leave the studio deeply in the red. Based on Banks’ recent statements though, the marketing was virtually non-existent, so the costs shouldn’t be too high. As such, there’s at least one silver lining for what’s become the latest installment in Hollywood’s production line of reboots to tank at the box office.
