Tokyo succeeds in plan to make 2020 Olympic medals from recycled gadgets
Tokyo’s organizing committee for the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games has announced that it’s expecting to meet its targets for a plan to make athletes’ medals out of discarded electronics. The committee says that there was “huge levels of support from the public and companies across Japan and from national and international athletes” resulting in municipal authorities collecting about 47,488 tons of e-waste.
That figure includes more than five million disused phones that were handed in at NTT Docomo stores. Collection stations were also placed in post offices and other public buildings. The committee’s target of 2,700kg of bronze was met last June, while 93.7 percent of the 30.3kg gold target and 85.4 percent of the 4,100kg silver...

Jeff Bezos says National Enquirer is threatening to publish his nude photos
Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos has published an astonishing personal blog post on the platform Medium detailing what he claims is extortion and blackmail on behalf of the tabloid National Enquirer.
In a post titled “No thank you, Mr. Pecker,” Bezos claims he’s being threatened with the publication of nude photos of him and suggestive photos of Lauren Sanchez, the news anchor and reporter with whom Bezos was having an affair. That is, unless he agrees to publicly make a statement downplaying the motivations behind National Enquirer parent company American Media Inc.’s investigation into his personal life, by saying the company was never “politically motivated or influenced by political forces.”
National Enquirer first detailed Bezos’ affair,...

Apple is telling developers to disclose secret screen recordings or face ‘immediate action’
Following revelations yesterday regarding the use of session replay tech among big-name travel apps that recode iPhone users’ screens, Apple is now telling developers to either remove the code responsible or disclose it to users, according to a new report from TechCrunch. The punishment for failing to do so could be as severe as having the offending app forcibly removed from the App Store.
Apple confirmed to the publication that its App Store Review Guidelines prohibit this kind of activity without first gaining proper consent from a user. “Protecting user privacy is paramount in the Apple ecosystem. Our App Store Review Guidelines require that apps request explicit user consent and provide a clear visual indication when recording,...

Razer’s Blade Stealth laptop, Ring’s latest lights, and more are cheaper today
Valentine’s Day is coming up next week, and if you haven’t yet bought your crush or loved one or spouse a gift of appreciation, time is running out. Not saying that you have to buy a piece of tech to show some affection, but it can’t hurt.
Razer’s Blade Stealth 13.3-inch laptop is hundreds of dollars off of its usual price at Best Buy. Normally $1,699, this model is currently $1,199 at Best Buy. It’s not the latest version in the Blade Stealth series, though it has an Intel Core 8th Gen i7, 16GB of RAM, 512GB of storage, and a QHD+ (3200 x 1800 resolution) LED display, a backlit keyboard, and a Microsoft Precision glass trackpad. This laptop can be powered through its Thunderbolt 3 USB-C port, which can also output to a 4K monitor,...

Autopilot is disabled on Tesla’s first Model 3 deliveries in Europe
Tesla has started making deliveries of the Model 3 in Europe, but customers who paid for the company’s Autopilot driver assistance package won’t be able to use the futuristic feature set just yet, according to the Los Angeles Times. Autopilot is currently disabled because the company is awaiting approval for the driver assistance package from RDW, the vehicle authority in the Netherlands.
Telsa announced in January that it had received “type approval” in Europe for the Model 3, which means the car had been cleared by regulators to be sold across the European Union. But a spokesperson for RDW told the Times on Thursday that Autopilot wasn’t part of that approval — even though the company sells the Model S and Model X in Europe with...

Apex Legends: everything you need to know about the Titanfall battle royale
Instead of making Titanfall 3, developer Respawn took the franchise in a completely different direction with Apex Legends. A free-to-play battle royale game that mashes together elements of Overwatch and Fortnite, Apex Legends was a complete surprise when it launched, but it has turned out to be a big hit early on, luring tens of millions of players. Keep up with the game as it continues to develop and grow right here.

Apple hid a bunch of futuristic ideas in this HomePod patent
Apple had an idea for a future HomePod that would offer an emoji version of Siri and LED lights that could display a variety of useful information, starting with the weather. In a 2017 patent application that was made publicly available in late January, Apple threw a bunch of increasingly far-out ideas onto its request to the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), as spotted by Mac Rumors.
The patent doesn’t name the HomePod specifically, but it does describe it pretty accurately as a device housed by fabric walls containing a mic and a speaker, so it’s hard to think Apple is talking about something else. That said, Apple is thinking of interweaving LEDs within the fabric to display everything from the weather to the time to sports...

The Lego Movie 2 builds a whole new layer on the first film’s foundation
Spoiler warning: this review reveals important ending details from the original 2014 Lego Movie.
The most innovative, daringly different hit projects face two major downsides: the backers are going to want sequels, and the more distinctive a project is, the higher the difficulty level on that sequel. Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s 2014 blockbuster The Lego Movie is an excellent case in point. The entire idea of a Lego-based movie looked like the baldest, most mercenary toy-commercial setup for a film that product placement gurus could possibly imagine. But Lord and Miller turned it into a meditation on creativity and childhood joy, with a side order of side-eye at some big, well-worn fantasy tropes, like the prophesied “chosen one” hero....

Apex Legends hits 10 million players in just three days
Developer Respawn believed that it was “putting a lot on the line” with the surprise launch of Apex Legends, but it looks like the decision was the right one: just three days after launch, the game has reached 10 million players. Fortnite, in comparison, took two weeks to hit the same milestone.
“We knew it would be risky to take the franchise in this direction, to go free to play, and do a surprise launch,” Respawn CEO Vince Zampella wrote in a blog post. “But we fell in love with Apex Legends and wanted, needed, other people to play it, too.” In addition to the overall player count, the developer also says that Apex has already reached 1 million concurrent players.
Apex Legends is a free-to-play battle royale game set in the Titanfall...

Woody Allen sues Amazon for $68 million for refusing to release his films
Writer-director Woody Allen filed a $68 million lawsuit against Amazon Studios today. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter and Variety, Allen claims the company breached its contract with him when it declined to release four of his films.
“Seeking to capitalize on Mr. Allen’s international stature, talent, and track record, Amazon—a technology giant but Hollywood novice—sought to develop its nascent entertainment studio by entering into a series of deals with Mr. Allen and his company, Gravier, promising to finance and distribute his future films and to be his “home” for the rest of his career,” the suit reads in part. “In June 2018, however, Amazon backed out of the deals, purporting to terminate them without any legal basis for doing...

New Darth Vader/Snoke Connection Spotted In Star Wars: The Last Jedi
Even though Snoke died rather unceremoniously in Star Wars; The Last Jedi, fans still aren’t convinced there’s not more to the former Supreme Leader of the First Order than meets the eye. After all, we’re all familiar with the various theories out there that guess at his potential secret identity, ranging from the intriguing and plausible – a resurrected Darth Plagueis – to the totally insane – that Stormtrooper who bashes his head on the door.
Now feeding into the mystery of Snoke is a new detail that an eagle-eyed fan has noticed in the eighth episode in the saga. In the scene when Snoke’s head appears as a giant hologram so that he can berate Hux, the pattern of the windows behind him gives a Vader-esque shape and detailing to the big bad’s face. Note the triangular window behind his mouth that closely resembles Vader’s breathing apparatus.
Reddit user Thecircularblue is responsible for spotting this one, sharing their findings on the /r/starwarspeculation sub-reddit. Here’s what they made of the curious comparison:
“There’s an image of Darth Vader mixed with Snoke during his interaction with General Hux on the Star Destroyer bridge. Vader’s mask even sits correctly the way it would fit on Snoke’s face. The glint in Snoke’s eye show’s where his eye would be behind the mask’s lens. Not only that, but said glint, in addition to the rectangular ceiling light, shows where light would be reflecting off of the lens. It’s akin to when Vader is fed up with Admiral Ozzel in The Empire Strikes Back, being that a leading dark side Force-user is castigating a subordinate officer. The images show how to see it (or the easy way by using the curve of your hand to cover Snoke’s face, from the left, up to his nose). It’s either a cool coincidence or intentional.”
We’re not sure that writer/director Rian Johnson was trying to suggest any connection between the two characters in order to fuel fan theories, but the description above makes it clear that the similarities between this scene and that moment from The Empire Strikes Back are probably not a coincidence. No doubt this was intended to be a deliberate homage by Johnson, with the impression of Vader in the background subtly drawing attention to this.
Though it hasn’t been confirmed that Andy Serkis will return as Snoke in Star Wars: Episode IX, all the evidence is pointing to the deceased dark Force-user making a comeback in J.J. Abrams’ closer to the Sequel Trilogy. But will it prove The Last Jedi‘s hint that there’s some link between Vader and Snoke? We’ll find out when the film blasts into cinemas on December 20th.

Kingsman Prequel Adds Kick-Ass And Bohemian Rhapsody Stars
The Kingsman franchise will return later this year not with Kingsman 3 but a prequel that takes place a hundred years ago and aims to tell the story of the founding of the upper class secret service. Said to be titled The Great Game, it’s already cast Harry Dickinson and Ralph Fiennes in the Eggsy/Galahad-type roles and now, a whole host of exciting actors have been revealed to be joining them.
First up is Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who’ll be reuniting with Vaughn after the two of them brought us Kick-Ass. Though the specifics of his part are being kept under wraps, given his star power in Hollywood, it’s expected to be a big role. But that’s not all. Far from it, in fact.
In addition to Taylor-Johnson, we can now tell you that Matthew Goode, Gemma Arterton and Tom Hollander have all boarded the pic, while it’s also been confirmed that as previously rumored, Rhys Ifans, Charles Dance and Daniel Brühl are involved as well. Ditto for Djimon Hounsou and Alison Steadman, who’ve also been linked to the project previously.
All things considered, it makes for a rather remarkable cast, and we simply can’t wait to see what Vaughn has cooked up for us. From what we know so far, the prequel will be a period drama which lets us in on the secret history of the world as told from the Kingsman organization’s perspective. All this will be focused around the Saville Row tailor base that we’ve seen in the previous movies.
The Kingsman prequel is currently set to hit theaters on November 9th, 2019. Kingsman 3, the next mainline installment which will see Taron Egerton return as Eggsy, will then follow the year after, with a Statesman spinoff – focusing on the Kingsman’s American cousins – also said to be in the works, too. Suffice it to say, it’s a good time to be a fan of the franchise.
