6 New Eternals Images Tease The MCU’s Upcoming Cosmic Epic

The buzz from Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings hasn’t even died down yet, but we’re only six and a half weeks away from the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s next theatrical release. A full year behind schedule, two-time Academy Award winner ChloĆ© Zhao’s Eternals arrives to take the franchise even further into uncharted territory.

We’ve seen Kevin Feige’s monolithic enterprise head down the cosmic route before, but not with a narrative that spans thousands of years and focuses on an all-powerful race of aliens to have lived in secret on our planet for that entire time, operating on the fringes of human history without ever getting directly involved unless their arch-nemeses the Deviants are responsible.

It’s going to be as big, bold and ambitious as we’ve ever seen from the MCU, with all the footage making it clear that Zhao has painted her intergalactic epic on the broadest possible canvas. Disney has released six new images from Eternals as the marketing campaign kicks up a gear, and you can check them out below.

The MCU already boasts the two highest-grossing domestic releases of the pandemic era, and there’s no reason to doubt that Eternals will make it three-for-three. Fans haven’t lost any of their interest and enthusiasm for the shared superhero series, and if the 26th installment can deliver on the expectations raised by the trailers, then we could be in for something special on November 5th.

Guillermo Del Toro Says He’s Spent 16 Years Writing 20 Unmade Scripts

Guillermo del Toro is no slouch, having been involved in 39 movies, eight TV shows and six video games since the beginning of his career as either a director, writer or producer, but he’s also got something of a reputation for signing on to a number of projects that ultimately end up falling through the cracks of development hell.

Plenty of those efforts did eventually fall into another pair of hands and make it onto the screen, a list that includes Tarzan, Beauty and the Beast, Thor, Justice League Dark, Halo, Haunted Mansion and Pan, but others weren’t so lucky. Hellboy III is the most obvious, but don’t forget about At the Mountains of Madness, Fantastic Voyage, The Wind in the Willows, Mephisto’s Bridge and many more.

In a social media exchange with a fan, the two-time Academy Award winner revealed the amount of time he’d spent working on things that he eventually dropped out of, and it’s eye-opening to say the least.

Del Toro’s Nightmare Alley is coming this December, with the first trailer generating a lot of buzz, and the mysterious thriller marks his first effort behind the camera since The Shape of Water became a box office and awards season favorite, while Netflix anthology series Cabinet of Curiosities is currently in production. Let’s hope it marks the start of a prolific new era, because it’s long since reached the stage where seeing his name attached to a feature length or episodic effort is no guarantee it’ll happen.

Disney CEO Defends The Company Over Black Widow Lawsuit

When the news first broke that Scarlett Johansson was suing Disney for breach of contract after the terms of her Black Widow deal weren’t updated to reflect the Marvel Cinematic Universe blockbuster being sent to streaming the same day it hit theaters, fingers of blame were understandably being pointed in the direction of newly-installed CEO Bob Chapek.

You can see why; under his predecessor Bob Iger, the Mouse House had ascended to new critical and commercial heights, driven by the acquisition of several major brands including Marvel, Pixar and Lucasfilm, and by all accounts it was a great place to work, with Kevin Feige boasting a great relationship with his boss and an even better one with the talent in his employ.

Not long after Chapek officially assumed the reins, an A-list star who’d worked with Marvel for a decade filed a lawsuit, something many analysts are adamant would never have happened on Iger’s watch. At the Goldman Sachs’ 30th annual Communacopia Conference via Deadline, the CEO addressed the situation publicly.

“Disney has had a long history of having very symbiotic and cooperative deals with the talent and we will continue to. Certainly the world is changing, and the talent deals going forward will have to reflect the fact that the world is changing. Remember, those films were made three or four years ago; those deals were cut three or four years ago.

Then they get launched in the middle of a global pandemic where that pandemic itself is accelerating a second dynamic, which is this changing consumer behavior. So we’re sort of putting a square peg in a round hole right now where we’ve got a deal conceived under a certain set of conditions, that actually results in a movie that is being released in a completely different set of conditions. So there’s a bit of rest going on right now.

Ultimately, we’ll think about that as we do our future talent deals and plan for that and make sure that’s incorporated. But right now we have this sort of middle position, where we’re trying to do right by the talent, I think the talent is trying to do right by us, and we’re just figuring out our way to bridge the gap. Ultimately we believe our talent is our most important asset, and we’ll continue to believe that, and as we always have, we’ll compensate them fairly per the terms of the contract that they agreed to us with.”

While Chapek obviously didn’t name names, it’s obvious what he’s referring to. If talent is the most important asset at Disney’s disposal, then why did the legal team criticize Johansson’s move as a PR stunt? And why did the lawyers make a point of releasing a statement effectively calling her greedy? It’s a thorny situation, and even though the Black Widow battle between the two parties looks to be getting settled out of court, it’s far from over.

Michael B. Jordan’s Superman Project Could Reportedly Be R-Rated

Warner Bros. and DC Films are currently developing two new Superman projects, but the fans remain skeptical because neither of them will feature the return of Henry Cavill. The DCEU’s canonical Kryptonian hasn’t suited up or even signed on for a new outing since Joss Whedon’s Justice League reshoots wrapped in the summer of 2017, and the chances of a comeback continue to grow slimmer with each passing day.

J.J. Abrams is producing a new movie being scripted by Ta-Nehisi Coates, which has already proved to be a contentious issue online, while Michael B. Jordan’s Outlier Society company are spearheading an HBO Max series set to follow the popular Val-Zod iteration of the iconic superhero.

News has been thin on the ground since Jordan’s Superman was first announced to be in the works at the end of June, but we’re hearing from our sources – the same ones who told us Ben Affleck was returning as Batman in The Flash long before it was returned – that the creative freedom provided by streaming could lead to a darker, more mature and potentially even R-rated spin on Superman.

Admittedly, all you need to do is say “f*ck” twice and you’ve got yourself an R-rated piece of content, but would the fanbase we willing to accept a violent take on the wholesome superhero? The PG-13 Man of Steel still dredges up the debate eight years later over whether or not Superman was right to snap Zod’s neck, but nothing rating-wise has been confirmed as of yet when Val-Zod’s live-action debut is still in its infancy.

An Underrated Stephen King Movie Is Blowing Up On Netflix

It feels as though barely a week goes by without a new Stephen King adaptation being announced for film or television, which probably isn’t too far from the truth. As of right now, there are currently eighteen feature films and seven episodic projects in development, eight if you include J.J. Abrams’ Shining prequel series Overlook that wasn’t picked up by HBO Max.

Studios just can’t seem to get enough of the horror author’s back catalogue, and the slate contains just as many reboots and remake as it does titles first-time adaptations. 2019’s Pet Sematary is modern Hollywood’s King fascination in microcosm; it’s only been two years since the updated version of the 1989 original was released, but a prequel is already in production for Paramount+.

Kevin Kƶlsch and Dennis Widmyer’s supernatural chiller was a success at the box office after earning $113 million on a $20 million budget, but the critical response was a lot more muted. Rotten Tomatoes has only deemed it worthy of a 57% score, while audiences rated at an even lower 32%, which is a rarity for smash hit horror.

As we gear up to enter spooky season, we can expect countless scary films to start making their way up the Netflix most-watched list. Pet Sematary has already accomplished that feat, having managed to crack the Top 20 this week as per FlixPatrol.
