Black Widow Confirmed How The MCU Villains Rank The Avengers

Having been recruited by Nick Fury as a means to protect our planet from what Thor called a higher form of war, the Avengers have saved both the world and the universe on enough occasions to gain something of a reputation for themselves across the entire length and breadth of the galaxy.

That being said, Black Widow confirmed an interesting plot point that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has never really touched on before. Earth’s Mightiest Heroes are definitely much stronger when they work as a team to form one cohesive superpowered unit, but Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova tells her onscreen surrogate sister that not everyone views them as equals.

You can’t argue with the logic behind it, when Scarlett Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff and Jeremy Renner’s Clint Barton don’t have any special abilities of their own, they just happened to be S.H.I.E.L.D. agents that were very good at their jobs. Steve Rogers, Bruce Banner and Thor are all incredibly powerful beings, while Tony Stark is a genius billionaire playboy philanthropist with a technologically advanced suit of weaponized armor that even the brightest minds in the field of science have continuously failed to replicate.

It must sting for Natasha to hear Yelena dismiss Black Widow‘s status among the Avengers by saying she’s not “one of the big ones”, but the Red Room assassin goes on to make an even better point when points out that there’s no chance “the god from space has to take an ibuprofen after a fight”. It’s an interesting caveat as to how the team is perceived within the context of the MCU, and you’d imagine someone like Thanos would be much happier to have come up against a highly trained covert operative than someone like Wanda Maximoff or Captain Marvel, both of whom almost handed the Mad Titan his ass on a platter.

Black Widow Star Teases A Villainous Return To The MCU

Rachel Weisz has largely stayed away from the realm of big budget blockbusters throughout her career, but she gets a lifetime pass from fans of the genre anyway, having starred as Evie in Stephen Sommers’ enduring cult classic The Mummy. In fact, the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Black Widow is her first big budget effort since The Bourne Legacy nine years ago, and the projects even boast a couple of superficial similarities.

The spinoff to Matt Damon’s marquee franchise sees Weisz become wrapped up in a shady government conspiracy revolving around mind-altering chemicals, forcing her to go on the run with Jeremy Renner’s Aaron Cross. In Black Widow, the actress’ Melina Vostokoff has been wrapped up in the shady government conspiracy revolving around mind-altering chemicals since the very beginning, with Natasha Romanoff’s Scarlett Johansson the one on the run, who was of course a longtime partner of Clint Barton, played by Jeremy Renner.

It was hardly the most demanding role of the two-time Academy Award nominee’s career, but in a new interview Weisz replied when asked that she’d be interested in returning to the MCU if Melina were to follow the precedent set by her comic book counterpart and dive headfirst into full blown villainy.

“Definitely, yes. If it’s written, I would be very interested. Yes.”

In the pages of Marvel Comics, Melina Vostokoff is an assassin known as Iron Maiden, who wears a lightweight armored exoskeleton that covers her entire body and protects her from damage. It’s not the easiest look to translate into live-action, but the broad strokes of the her villainous persona would certainly mark an interesting change of pace for Weisz. Should Black Widow get sequels with Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova in the lead, then turning Melina to the dark side is one potential storyline avenue, while she’s also been a member of the Thunderbolts in the past.

Watch: The Nightmare Ends In Fear Street Part 3: 1666 Trailer

The Fear Street trilogy has proven to be a phenomenal success for Netflix. Subscribers of all ages have loved the horror movie series, which is halfway between a TV show and a movie franchise, with the first two installments drawing in both huge audiences and a lot of social media attention over the past couple of weeks. The third is about to drop in time for this weekend, and this trailer promises a grand finale to the saga of Shadyside. Check out the Fear Street Part 3: 1666 promo via the player above.

“We can end the curse,” says Kiana Madeira’s Deena in this trailer, and to do that she must flashback 300 years into the past and discover the truth behind a witch hunt that started the evil plaguing Shadyside in the present. Or, as the official synopsis puts it, “The origins of Sarah Fier’s curse are finally revealed as history comes full circle on a night that changes the lives of Shadysiders forever.” Gillian Jacobs, Sadie Sink, Benjamin Flores Jr. and Ashley Zukerman are also in the cast.

Fear Street

A big part of what has made Fear Street so much fun, particularly for horror fans, is how each chapter sports such a unique feel, with the different movies pulling from a range of influences. Part 1: 1994 was Scream-inspired, while Part 2: 1978 tipped its hat to Friday the 13th. This time around, we’re in The Witch territory. Director Leigh Janiak and his team have done a commendable job of transforming R.L. Stine’s teen book trilogy into something with a lot more oomph.

Given the success of Fear Street, it seems a safe bet to assume Netflix will get working on some similar productions ASAP, maybe even more Stine adaptations. For the moment, don’t miss Fear Street Part 3: 1666 when it debuts on the streamer this Friday, July 16th. And if you haven’t caught up yet, catch the first two films on Netflix now.

Tom Hiddleston Expected To Return For Doctor Strange 2

Today delivered the much-anticipated season (not series!) finale of Loki – and the good news is it didn’t disappoint. Without getting too deep into spoilers, suffice it to say the episode paved the way for a bunch of upcoming MCU projects, including Loki season 2, Spider-Man: No Way Home, What If…?, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and, last but not least, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

We always knew WandaVision would lead into the Benedict Cumberbatch sequel as Elizabeth Olsen was announced to be reprising Scarlet Witch in the movie. But Loki could prove just as important a lead-in to the Sam Raimi production, according to a new bit of intel. In their write-up of the news about Loki getting a second season, The Hollywood Reporter shared that Tom Hiddleston is “expected” to return as the God of Mischief in Doctor Strange 2. THR notes that Marvel has yet to confirm anything about this, however.

It’s worth pointing out that THR doesn’t comment on whether Hiddleston would be back as the main Loki variant we followed in the Disney Plus series or some other form of Loki who’s out there in the multiverse. The main Loki may well appear, though, seeing as he’s become so integral to the expansion of the multiverse, and his knowledge of how reality has come under such monumental threat could make him a useful ally to Stephen Strange.

Then again, we shouldn’t expect Hiddleston to have a huge amount of screentime in the sequel, as he has been busy shooting his own TV show, so a cameo (maybe an extended one) is probably all we’re getting. Loki EP Michael Waldron also penned the script for DS2, which is no doubt why the two projects ended up so connected.

As there’s currently no word on when Loki season 2 will get here, it looks likely we’ll next see the Asgardian trickster in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, hitting theaters next March.

Black Widow Director Says The Movie’s Ending Isn’t A Plot Hole

There were always concerns heading into the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Black Widow that it would end up painted into a corner by design, with the prequel taking place in between the events of Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, leaving very little wiggle room for director Cate Shortland to deviate from the Infinity Saga’s established beats.

The majority of those doubts were assuaged, though, with the movie instead filling in the huge gaps in Natasha Romanoff’s backstory, introducing her surrogate family into the mythology without telling a straightforward origin story. The final scene also retconned the end of Civil War by hinting that Natasha aided Steve in breaking the imprisoned Avengers out of the Raft, but some fans were pointing out a potential plot hole immediately prior to that.

William Hurt’s General Ross had been seeking to bring Natasha in since the very beginning of the narrative, and he turns up with his forces once the Red Room has been brought crashing down. Scarlett Johansson gets the standard MCU hero shot, but we never find out how or why she managed to get away before she reunites with O-T Fagbenle’s Rick Mason literally seconds later. In a new interview, Shortland confirmed that it was a deliberate move, one that’s left entirely up to the audience for interpretation.

“That was intentional, because we wanted to leave the question of how she would get away, rather than allow the audience to get exhausted by another fight. We wanted to leave you guys on a high with the question of how did she use her ingenuity? Because she did. And it was probably, I would say, she bargained her way out of that situation. But I don’t know.”

An additional action sequence or elaborate escape right after the third act climax would have definitely been overkill, and we’ve seen enough from the protagonist over the last decade to know she’s more than capable of evading capture, so it was the right call to end Black Widow on a more ambiguous note before adding the requisite connective tissue to Infinity War.

Why Deadpool Made His MCU Debut In A Non-Marvel Trailer

It’s been a long time coming, but Deadpool has now officially made his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut. We’ve been hearing constant chatter that the Merc with a Mouth was poised to make his first appearance in the franchise here, there and everywhere, so it’s typically left field for the irreverent assassin to show up in a trailer breakdown for Free Guy of all things.

The Ryan Reynolds connection makes it a lot more obvious in hindsight, but Shawn Levy’s upcoming video game action comedy isn’t a Marvel Studios or Walt Disney Studios production, which lends it a very bizarre air. Free Guy was originally given the green light at Fox, where Deadpool ironically also used to call home, but after being delayed for so long it’s now coming to theaters next month as a 20th Century Studios effort, and it’ll spend just 45 days as a big screen exclusive before heading to Disney Plus.

Reynolds might be a big star, but the box office is only in its earliest stages of returning to normal, and there are still plenty of question marks surrounding Free Guy‘s chances of success. The leading man has headlined just as many bombs as he has hits, while Levy also has an inconsistent track record from both a critical and commercial standpoint.

Utilizing Deadpool may turn out to be a stroke of genius from the Mouse House’s marketing team. Wade Wilson is a massively popular figure with a pair of films under his belt that combined to earn in excess of $1.5 billion, while fans have been desperate to find out when and where he would make his MCU bow. Now that it’s happened, the buzz should realistically raise awareness and hype for Free Guy, resulting in a knock-on effect that could bump box office takings up a notch or two.

New MCU Theory Says Yelena Belova May Return As A Villain

Florence Pugh may have only made her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut a few days ago when Black Widow hit theaters and Disney Plus Premier Access, but fans are already desperate to see more of the actress’ Yelena Belova after she came dangerously close to walking away with the entire movie at the expense of title heroine Scarlett Johansson.

The good news is that we don’t have long to wait for the breakout character of Phase Four’s feature length opener to return, with Pugh having been confirmed for Hawkeye months ago. However, the post-credits scene of Black Widow also indicates that she’s not a full-fledged hero, with Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine pointing her in the direction of Jeremy Renner’s Clint Barton.

While it would be easy to assume that the Contessa’s plan will be swiftly rumbled and Yelena will be back onside with the good guys by the time Hawkeye draws to a close, a new theory says it might not be that simple. As an elite assassin who knows nothing else but tracking down her targets and eliminating them, Yelena is obviously a deadly asset in either the right or wrong hands.

The final episode of The Falcon and the Winter Solider teased that the Thunderbolts are in the midst of being assembled, and it would be safe to assume that Yelena is set to pitch up with Wyatt Russell’s John Walker and Daniel Bruhl’s Zemo as a member, and those two definitely aren’t clean cut forces of good.

Of course, we’ll have a much better idea of where the dominoes are falling once Hawkeye draws to a close, but even if she continues doing bad deeds, the MCU’s new Black Widow in waiting is poised to remain a firm fan favorite.
