Batman Fans Campaigning For Ben Affleck’s Solo Movie Again

Ever since Ben Affleck ended his self-imposed retirement as Batman to suit up for Zack Snyder’s Justice League reshoots and lend support to Ezra Miller’s Barry Allen in The Flash, the internet has been awash with rumors as to what the future could potentially hold for the DCEU’s canonical Caped Crusader.

During that time we’ve heard tales of multiple movies and TV shows based on all sorts of comic book storylines that would see Affleck make a full-time return to the fold and continue his record-breaking live-action tenure as the Dark Knight. Of course, absolutely none of the speculative projects have come anywhere close to being confirmed as of yet, but there’s no harm in wishful thinking.

Yesterday marked the actor’s 49th birthday, and while Snyder celebrated by posting a never-before-seen image of an early costume test from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, fans decided to go one better and pepper their well wishes with the latest chapter in their campaign to will his solo movie into existence, as you can see below.

Those DCEU fans certainly love launching an online movement or two, with David Ayer speechless at the calls for his cut of Suicide Squad garnering over 400,000 retweets. Affleck hasn’t commented on his future as Batman beyond The Flash, but that hasn’t stopped a myriad of conflicting reports making the rounds that he’s either going to live or die by the end of the Scarlet Speedster’s solo debut, which admittedly means the rumors have a 50/50 shot at being right on the money. The people would love to see it happen, but you’d have to imagine the ball remains firmly in Affleck’s court.

Johnny Depp Claims He’s Being Boycotted By Hollywood

It’s no coincidence that Johnny Depp‘s career hit the skids just as his bitter divorce and subsequent string of legal battles opposite ex-wife Amber Heard began dominating the headlines. One of the most popular and highest-paid stars in the industry just a few short years ago, the actor’s reputation has taken a battering from certain quarters while others continue to defend him relentlessly.

The 58 year-old was dropped from the Pirates of the Caribbean and Fantastic Beasts franchises, and saw crime thriller City of Lies sit on the shelf for years, while biographical drama Minamata is still waiting on a domestic theatrical release date despite production having wrapped in early 2019. Director Andrew Levitas blasted MGM for burying the project based solely on Depp’s involvement, and in a new interview the leading man agreed with the filmmaker, asking why Hollywood’s boycott of his presence should affect a movie a lot of people worked very hard on.

We looked these people in the eyeballs and promised we would not be exploitative. That the film would be respectful. I believe that we’ve kept our end of the bargain, but those who came in later should also maintain theirs. Some films touch people. And this affects those in Minamata and people who experience similar things. And for anything… For Hollywood’s boycott of me? One man, one actor in an unpleasant and messy situation, over the last number of years?. But, you know, I’m moving towards where I need to go to make all that… To bring things to light.”

The courtroom saga between Depp and Heard is far from over, and the director of the San Sebastian Film Festival was forced into releasing a statement defending the decision to bestow the three-time Academy Award nominee with the Donastia Award at this year’s edition after facing backlash from women in the industry and domestic abuse charities.

It’s a sticky situation that’s a long way from being resolved, and history has shown that many talents have definitely done much worse than what Johnny Depp is only being accused of and still managed to bounce back, but at least it’s become abundantly clear that his fans will continue backing him at every turn as he looks to regain his seat at the industry table.

Spawn Movie Undergoing Rewrite With New Screenwriter

Todd McFarlane has been teasing his Spawn movie for years. Jamie Foxx is set to play the lead role, Jeremy Renner is co-starring as Detective “Twitch,” and McFarlane signed one of the best practical visual effects guys in the business: The Walking Dead’s resident gorehound, Greg Nicotero.

Unfortunately, the only thing the Spawn creator hasn’t been able to get on board is a major studio. Many concluded this was because McFarlane, a one-time filmmaker for the ill-received 1997 Spawn film, insisted on directing. But we heard earlier in the year that the script might just reek.

A copy of a 2017 draft leaked online, with it being picked apart on YouTube and summarized as:

“This film is never getting made. And if it does get made from this script it’s garbage. Total garbage. Absolute crap.”

Perhaps this criticism was taken on board, as THR is reporting that writer Brian Tucker has been commissioned to rewrite McFarlane’s script. Tucker is responsible for 2013’s Broken City, starring Mark Wahlberg and Russell Crowe, which didn’t exactly set the world on fire but is decent enough. He’s also working on the remake of The Fugitive for Warner Bros., so I suppose we’ll wait and see how that turns out.

The THR report also names McFarlane and Blumhouse’s Jason Blum as producers, with Carla Hacken executive producing. After so long without any news, I’d assumed that the project was dead, but it seems there are still signs of life in the franchise yet.

You have to praise McFarlane’s tenacity in getting this film made, as I’d have likely thrown in the towel by now. Spawn fans can at least hold out hope that the new HBO animated show becomes a reality. Animation means fans don’t have to worry too much about budgetary constraints in depicting the lead character, and the series would theoretically follow in the footsteps of the excellent late-90s show. As for the reboot, only time will tell.

Sylvester Stallone Celebrates Six Decades Straight Starring In Number One Films

Sylvester Stallone, who plays King Shark in this month’s The Suicide Squad, celebrated his sixth consecutive decade starring in a number one film in an Instagram post on Friday after Deadline reported the news.

“Thank you for making me feel like I’m on top of the world,” Stallone wrote on Instagram. “It’s been a great career thanks to all of you! Keep punching, sly. Thank you @jamesgunn.”

At 75 years of age, Stallone is best known for his early career starring roles in Rocky and Rambo: First Blood. He has appeared in 46 films in the last six decades, with 20 of those making it to the number one spot at the box office. Other notable films in Stallone’s portfolio include Cliffhanger, Judge Dredd, Driven, The Expendables, Spy Kids and Creed.

The Suicide Squad opened in theaters and on HBO Max on Aug. 6 and is directed by James Gunn, the man behind both Guardians of the Galaxy movies. The film received a mostly positive reception from critics and audience alike. Stallone’s character, King Shark, is also referred to as Nanue throughout the film. He is a humanoid shark and the son of the Shark God.

Stallone’s next big film in the works is the fourth installment in the successful Expendables franchise. Details on the film have been scarce for the last year or so, and there is still no word on a proper release date. But Stallone teased the upcoming sequel in an Instagram post two weeks ago, showing off a newly designed ring for his character, Barney Ross.
