It’s Halloween, so here are some mischievous skeletons

Animation: Andre Zimmermann

Everyone focuses on what’s blowing up on TikTok, but here’s something that’s been getting a bit of attention over on Byte: some playful little skeletons.

Over the past month, designer Andre Zimmermann has been posting short looping clips of meddlesome skeletons getting into low-stakes hijinks, like running off with food from a table or knocking a plant off a ledge. “They sort of became these jerks,” Zimmermann said. “Like a cat.”

They’re the furthest thing from spooky, but their mischievous antics feel a bit more comforting during what’s already a high-stress Halloween.

My favorite of Zimmermann’s not-quite-spooky animations shows a humanoid collection of skulls dancing to a looping disco track....

Halloween Kills Trailer Teased Returning Stars Of 1978 Original

Were it not for COVID-19, we’d be enjoying Halloween Kills right now. David Gordon Green’s 2018 reworking of the franchise breathed new life into Michael Myers, ignoring the sequels and positioning itself as a direct continuation of the 1978 original. In 2021, Michael Myers will be back once again (after having escaped being trapped in a burning house) to menace not just Jamie Lee Curtis’ Laurie Strode, but some old friends from back in the day, too.

Universal released a new promo for the film yesterday teasing the returning characters, which include Kyle Richards as Lindsey Wallace, Nancy Stephens as Nurse Marion Chambers, Robert Longstreet as Lonnie Elam and Anthony Michael Hall as Tommy Doyle. They all survived Michael’s initial rampage, but something tells me only a few of them will make it into Halloween Ends in 2022.

Green laid out his philosophy for the movie in an interview with Empire, saying that:

“The first one was more about Laurie’s life of isolation after Michael and her attempts at revenge. It was personal. This is more about the unraveling of a community into chaos. It’s about how fear spreads virally.”

That sounds pretty damn topical for 2020, though honestly, I’d probably rather deal with a homicidal knife-wielding maniac in town rather than a killer virus (at least the maniac can be run over with a car, exploded or shot). Then again, Michael Myers is at least happy to comply with wearing a mask in public.

Halloween creator John Carpenter is also back with a new synth score, which is awesome given that his work for the 2018 film was one of the best things about it. Over the summer he said that the movie is complete and hyped up the carnage that’s coming our way next year, saying:

“The cut is done. They’ll mix it in New York in the next week or so. Then it will be in the can. My work is all done. The movie is something else. It’s fun, intense and brutal, a slasher movie times one hundred, big time. It’s huge. I’ve never seen anything like this: the kill count!”

That’s music to my ears. After all, you can’t half ass the blood n’ guts if you’re going to title the film Halloween Kills. Here’s hoping the year flies by and we see Michael back on the big screen where he belongs in 2021.

In its latest confusing decision, Twitter reinstates The New York Post

Twitter

Rupert Murdoch’s tabloid The New York Post is back on Twitter, after Twitter updated its policy on policy changes. This story is going to be confusing, but not as confusing as Twitter’s attempts at moderation.

To recap: On October 14th, The New York Post published a (contested and possibly part of a disinformation campaign, though this is absolutely not the point I am here to tell you about) story about Hunter Biden, the son of presidential candidate Joe Biden. Very little of the contents of the Post story are pertinent to the discussion we are about to have, except this: some of the materials in it, Twitter alleges, seem to be the result of hacking.

Adam Sandler Reportedly Developing Animated Adult Film For Netflix

Sometimes, it seems like everything Adam Sandler touches turns to gold. People just can’t seem to get enough of the renowned comedian. Indeed, on top of his classic films like Billy MadisonHappy Gilmore and many more still being quoted regularly to this day, his newer work has also been (mostly) beloved by the masses.

His latest original for Netflix, Hubie Halloween, was a huge hit with fans and quickly rose to number one on the platform’s charts, no doubt prompting everyone involved to get to work on a sequel. We also learned that his 2008 comedy You Don’t Mess with the Zohan is about to get a new chapter as well.

The 54-year-old actor clearly has a face that can make folks laugh even when he’s not trying to be funny. In fact, audiences don’t even need to see him to start cracking up. The Hotel Transylvania franchise, in which he voices Count Dracula, is proof of that. That blockbuster series is also still going strong, with work on a fifth installment reportedly getting started nearly a year before the fourth even hits theaters.

Netflix has clearly taken notice of all of Sandler’s success and has now asked him to develop yet another completely original film for them. This flick, however, won’t be live-action and it definitely won’t be for children. According to insider Daniel Richtman, the notorious funnyman is reportedly developing an animated pic for the streaming service, and it’ll be aimed at an older crowd.

“Sandler is working on a new animated film for adults for Netflix,” he says.

Details on the feature are still scarce, but we’re pretty confident that it’ll once again rise to the top of the platform’s charts as soon as it’s released. After all, anything Adam Sandler does for Netflix is seemingly a home run, and there’s no reason to think that won’t be the case here as well.

Apple will replace AirPods Pro for free with faulty noise cancellation, static or crackling

Photo by Chris Welch / The Verge

Today, exactly one year after Apple first launched the AirPods Pro — and thus the same day the very first AirPods Pro owners will see their one-year warranties expire — Apple has launched a repair program that offers free repairs or replacements for another whole year if your AirPods Pro experience issues with noise cancellation or static.

Specifically, Apple will fix:

Crackling or static sounds that increase in loud environments, with exercise or while talking on the phone

Active Noise Cancellation not working as expected, such as a loss of bass sound, or an increase in background sounds, such as street or airplane noise

Apple says only a “small percentage of AirPods Pro” are affected by the issues, but it apparently wasn’t just an...

Starbucks says nearly a quarter of all US retail orders are placed from a phone

Starbucks

Almost a quarter of all transactions at Starbucks stores in the US are mobile orders through the company’s app, an earnings document revealed yesterday. Ordering ahead through the Starbucks app is the company’s suggested way to get in and out of its locations faster during the pandemic, hopefully making it easier to maintain social distancing in the process.

Starbucks launched “Mobile Order & Pay” in 2015, combining the company’s existing payment system with new online ordering features that let you order ahead for pickup at stores. This week’s new stats show how popular that feature has become, slowly growing over time until it dramatically increased over the course of 2020 — from 17 percent at the end of last year all the way to 24...
