Kindle Oasis (10th gen) Review: Still the best ebook reader in 2020?

It’s been several months since Amazon introduced its Kindle Oasis (10th generation), and going by the usual Kindle launch cycles, this should remain the flagship Kindle to buy through 2020.  Compared to the last Oasis, which ushered in many significant changes, not much has changed this cycle with the third Oasis iteration. In fact, the […]

Samsung sold 6.7 million 5G phones in 2019, beating expectations

Photo by James Bareham / The Verge

Samsung sold 6.7 million 5G phones in 2019 between the Galaxy S10 5G and the Galaxy Note 10 Plus 5G, the company announced today, marking better than expected sales for devices supporting the next-generation mobile standard.

While 6.7 million devices may not sound like a lot in the grand scheme of the phone market, it’s better than expected — at IFA 2019, Samsung had only sold 2 million 5G devices, and only expected to sell 4 million total by the end of 2019. That number also makes up a considerable amount of the fledging 5G market, with Samsung claiming its devices count for 53.9 percent of the global 5G marketplace.

Movies are already disappearing from Disney+

disney+

Disney+ just launched in November, but some movies are already disappearing from the service, as reported by Polygon. For example, the three Home Alone movies were available when Disney+ launched, but the first Home Alone and Home Alone 2: Lost in New York were removed from Disney+ yesterday, the first day of the new year.

Movies going away from Disney+ kind of goes against the idea you might’ve had that it would be the place you could find everything Disney-related forevermore. (And you wouldn’t be blamed for thinking that — in November, Disney did tell Comicbook that it, unlike some other services, wouldn’t have a “rotating slate” of licensed movies each month.) But that doesn’t exactly appear to be true, given that some movies have...

Here Are All The Movies Being Removed From Disney Plus This Month

One of the biggest selling points of Disney Plus is that it would grant you access to Disney’s impressive back catalogue. Aside from its animated classics, the Mouse House owns a huge variety of other properties through its various subsidiaries, most notably Marvel and Star Wars. So, it’s a bit disappointing that Disney Plus seems to be following the lead of its competitors and not just adding, but removing titles each month. And naturally, their subscribers aren’t very happy.

One of the main reasons other services like Netflix remove titles from their platform is that they’ve lost the licensing rights to the show/movie, but Disney has no such excuse. Still, if you’re a Disney Plus subscriber, you now no longer have access to the following movies ‘just because’:

Home Alone

Home Alone 2

The Sandlot

Dr. Dolittle

Flicka

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

Strange Magic

Wonderful World of Disney: Magical Holiday Celebration

White Wilderness

The Three Musketeers

Garfield: A Tale of Two Kitties

The Shaggy Dog

Admittedly, few of these movies are going to set the world on fire, but there are a couple classics on there. Perhaps the most annoying removals are the more obscure Disney features that are going to be difficult to find anywhere else. Disney’s Mickey, Donald and Goofy-starring The Three Musketeers is precisely the kind of thing that should have a permanent home on Disney Plus, as is their 1958 nature documentary White Wilderness (notorious for its staged depiction of lemming suicide).

Similarly, while Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides isn’t a great movie, I can’t see any good reason for sending it back to the Disney archive. On the other hand, perhaps the removal of Garfield: A Tale of Two Kitties could be considered as dodging a bullet for subscribers.

Whatever the reasons are behind them, I hope these removals slow to a trickle as Disney Plus establishes itself. After all, if you can’t watch your favorite Disney films on there, then what’s the point of it?

J.J. Abrams Reportedly Wanted Finn And Poe Romance In Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker disappointed many fans in some key ways. Chief among them though was the total lack of any romance between Finn and Poe, something many had been counting on happening ever since The Force Awakens. Sure, there was a very brief bit of LGBT representation, but the pairing of the redeemed Stormtrooper and the ace pilot had a huge amount of popularity, so there’s been a lot of blowback against the decision to sidestep their connection in TROS.

It’s doubly disheartening to find out, then, that the original plan was to make them a couple before studio execs got involved. At least, that’s what the latest chatter on Reddit and Twitter are saying, with multiple reports surfacing today that say not only did Lucasfilm make Abrams cut a lot out of the film, but that FinnPoe was one thing in particular that they weren’t on board with.

Speaking with our own sources – the same ones who told us Ewan McGregor was returning as Obi-Wan back in May, and that Rey was Palpatine’s [SPOILERS] in September, both of which ended up being true – WGTC has confirmed that what you’ve been hearing on social media today is indeed true, and that it was Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy who ruled out the idea due to the way this would affect the movie’s overseas releases. In particular, there was a belief that countries such as China and Russia would have banned the film if it had featured openly gay leads.

As frustrating as this is to hear, it’s hardly unexpected. Sure enough, that easily-missed aforementioned lesbian kiss was removed from Rise in regions such as the Middle East, seemingly confirming that the FinnPoe version would have faced serious cuts in some quarters. Interestingly, though, the same-sex kiss actually managed to evade Chinese censors, which is a small but encouraging step. Hopefully, in a few years’ time, we won’t have Hollywood execs scared to better diversify their films for fear of censorship.

In any case, as mentioned above, what we’ve been told about Abrams’ wish to deal with Finn and Poe’s relationship echoes separate info shared on Reddit, which has gained a lot of traction online today. True, the Redditor’s scoop differs slightly from what we’re hearing, but it’s getting harder to dispute the central fact that the creatives were fully behind a prominent gay relationship in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and Lucasfilm/Disney weren’t. After all, Oscar Isaac has already started to spill the beans, so maybe the cast and crew will open up some more in time.

Margot Robbie Confirms Whether Or Not Joker’s In Birds Of Prey

When the fantastic Birds of Prey trailer dropped in October, many fans wondered why Jared Leto’s Joker was nowhere to be found. He and Harley Quinn were basically inseparable during Suicide Squad so it makes sense that the Clown Prince would play a big part in his girlfriend’s standalone flick.

We then learned that the toxic couple actually broke up at some point between the last movie and this one. Still, some people have been holding out hope that the infamous villain would at least cameo in the film.

Since then, though, there’ve been various reports that this isn’t going to happen. In fact, some have even said that Leto’s time as the Joker is over. While we can’t officially confirm the latter, we now know for sure that the Academy Award winner won’t be popping up at all in Birds of Prey.

This news comes courtesy of Margot Robbie herself, as she stated in a recent interview that the actor’s incarnation of the Joker doesn’t appear at all in the film. Forgive us if we aren’t exactly crying.

Going from Heath Ledger’s Oscar-winning performance in The Dark Knight to Leto’s bizarre take on the same character was jarring to say the least. The actor tried to put his own spin on the notorious bad guy, but it definitely didn’t turn out as well as he’d hoped. And after watching Joaquin Phoenix dazzle audiences with his titular role in Joker, it’s become increasingly clear that his predecessor might not be the right guy for the part.

How do you feel about Leto’s Joker not making an appearance in Birds of Prey, though? Should the DCEU let him keep playing the character in future movies? Or should they re-cast the role entirely? Sound off in the comments and let us know what you think!

Birds of Prey will fly into theaters on February 7th, 2020.
