The top four UK mobile operators have issued a joint statement asking for help to stop people burning 5G towers. Multiple cell towers were targeted in the UK last week in apparent arson attacks, after online conspiracy theories have been falsely linking the spread of the coronavirus pandemic to the roll out of 5G. There’s no scientific evidence to suggest a link, but the theories have been spreading widely on social networks like Facebook and Nextdoor.
“Not only are these claims baseless, they are harmful for the people and businesses that rely on the continuity of our services,” says a joint statement from EE, o2, Three, and Vodafone. “They have also led to the abuse of our engineers and, in some cases, prevented essential network...

After months of publicity, Quibi — the mobile phone app that’s centered on short, bite-sized original programming — is launching today on iPhone and Android. The platform is the brainchild of entertainment industry giant Jeffrey Katzenberg and seasoned tech executive Meg Whitman, and it has been built from the ground up for smartphones. After investing $1 billion in star power and content production, Quibi is about to find out whether consumers are willing to pay $4.99 (with ads) or $7.99 (ad-free) for shows that last 10 minutes or less.
We’ll have a separate review for Quibi’s launch shows, but I’m focusing more on the app itself. To start, let me reiterate that your phone is the only way to experience Quibi. There’s no TV app, which...
Quibi is the latest streaming service to launch in an increasingly crowded market — and it might be the weirdest one yet. Instead of relying on big franchise names or extensive catalogs of old content, like Disney Plus, Peacock, or HBO Max are doing, Quibi is betting big on a mobile-first strategy. Its “quick bites” of content can be watched in 10 minutes or less, and every piece of content can be seamlessly transitioned between separate vertical and landscape versions.
Interested in trying it out? Here’s everything you need to know about getting started with Quibi:
Quibi offers two subscription tiers: a $4.99-per-month option with “some ads” and a $7.99-per-month plan with no ads.
There’s also a limited time...
Apple CEO Tim Cook has provided an update on the company’s response to the COVID-19 crisis. In a video posted to Twitter, Cook says Apple has sourced more than 20 million masks through its global supply chain and is working with governments to donate them where they’re needed.
Apple has also launched “a company-wide effort bringing together product designers, engineering, operations, packaging teams, and our suppliers to design, produce and ship face shields for health workers,” according to Cook, who showed off one of these shields in the video.

Its April 5th, and you know what that means, Star Trek fans… it’s First Contact Day! In Trek lore, this date in 2063 marks the first time that humanity reached out to the other races of the galaxy and they reached back. Pioneer Zephram Cochrane invented the warp drive and piloted his experimental craft into the stars, something which attracted the attention of a passing Vulcan vessel, who came to meet him on Earth. The subsequent handshake between Cochrane and his alien acquaintance was a monumental event in human history.
In honor of the occasion, Star Trek lovers have been pouring onto social media to commemorate the big day. Including a bit of cosplay to brighten up the quarantine.
Captain's log, stardate 73726.8. We have beamed down onto an M-class planet for shore leave. There seem to be signs of civilisation but the streets are empty and the businesses closed.

It remains a powerful story for fans.
Today is April 5th, which means it's #FirstContactDay!
The day in Star Trek mythology that humanity, at its lowest point (and a time-displaced Picard at his most bitterly disillusioned) took the silly risk of being optimistic, and everything changed.
It gives me feelings. pic.twitter.com/DHXimg9ou6

Unfortunately, some aren’t as optimistic about First Contact Day coming true in our timeline.

Hey, why not start planning for what you’re going to do on First Contact Day in 2063?
Happy First Contact Day! I wonder how many Trekkies are planning to make the pilgrimage to Bozeman in 43 years. If I'm still alive and in good health at 77, I will definitely be going! pic.twitter.com/GgYJiLtVna

In 43 years, it might be First Contact Day. But here in 2020, it’s No Contact Day.
Instead of First Contact Day, we get this

First Contact Day was introduced in 1996’s Star Trek: First Contact, which saw Picard and the Enterprise-E crew being thrown back 300 years into the past where they must prevent the Borg from averting Cochrane’s encounter with the Vulcans in a bid to stop Starfleet from ever being formed. Thankfully, the evil plot was foiled and the timeline was kept on track. Enterprise later explored how Starfleet was built off the back of the First Contact event, with Archer’s adventures culminating in the formation of the United Federation of Planets.
Why not celebrate First Contact Day by watching some Star Trek on CBS All Access? Remember, Sir Patrick Stewart recently shared an offer to subscribe for free for the first 30 days.
While self-quarantining at home amid the current COVID-19 pandemic has its obvious downsides, the internet keeps delivering by giving us more things to geek out on, and apparently, Spider-Man star Tom Holland sharing a live chat with singer Justin Bieber is too much for Twitter to handle.
The recent outbreak of the novel coronavirus, which has since exploded in European countries and made its way to Northern America, doesn’t discriminate between different classes in society. As such, barring those whose service is considered essential, almost everyone is self-isolating to help curb the spread of the deadly disease. Among them, some Hollywood celebrities have been extremely active on social media, campaigning for people to practice social distancing and good hygiene in order to defeat the pandemic.
Additionally, with Marvel following the lead of other major studios and shutting down production on all Phase 4 movies and future projects, many of the MCU stars are also battling the boredom of home quarantine. Even Spider-Man star Tom Holland is resorting to everything he can to keep busy, like solving a 1000-piece puzzle.
Now, in what seems at first like an odd pairing, the actor joined Justin Bieber’s live Instagram session earlier this week, sending Twitter into a frenzied state of madness. Check out just some of the epic reactions for yourself:

Of course, despite some of these tweets implying that this has been the most unexpected, albeit welcome, pairing that they could’ve imagined, this isn’t the first Tom Holland has spoken about Bieber. While promoting his new film Onward, the actor had the following to say about the singer:
“I think recently, Justin Bieber and what he’s been doing with that show that he did on YouTube, I just really enjoyed that because it was nice to see that someone who like, goes through it in the biggest way possible also has a hard time and I just felt like there was a real solidarity for young people going through it. No one goes through it like he does, but we all go through it a little bit. I was just really grateful to see that side of him. I’m just really happy that he’s happy. He seems so happy and it just made me happy.”
What do you make of this, though? And what was your reaction when you originally saw the Spider-Man star having a chat with the Bieb? As usual, let us know in the comments below.
The ongoing Coronavirus pandemic that has left millions of people around the world essentially confined to their homes has left an awful lot of folks with more time on their hands than they’ve ever been used to. After the movie industry was forced into a virtual shutdown as theaters across the planet locked their doors, some studios were kind enough to accelerate the release of their latest films to home video, in an effort to appease those fans left devastated by the months-long delays faced by nearly every high-profile effort on the calendar.
Social media has also turned out to be a great way for people to connect and share their opinions about movies, no matter how random the subject matter. The users who went online to debate which installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe could categorically be labeled as the worst are likely the same ones who were left broken-hearted by the whole of Phase Four being delayed, while Netflix’s docu-series Tiger King turned into a global phenomenon overnight.
The latest online debate looks to be a much more wholesome one, as fans try and decide whether Optimus Prime or Captain America gave better inspirational speeches. While neither are a patch on Bill Pullman’s President Whitmore from Independence Day, both characters are nonetheless iconic leaders of teams that anchored multi-billion dollar franchises, and you can check out some of the opinions below.

It certainly looks as though Optimus Prime has the edge over the recently-retired Steve Rogers, even though the latter was the point man for the Avengers for nearly a decade. Of course, the Transformers movies never found much love from critics, but it still seems as though the fans would be ready and willing to rally behind Peter Cullen’s instantly-recognizable orders at a moment’s notice.
