Dwayne Johnson’s real impact on the hierarchy of power in the DC universe is uncovered

For all the hype that surrounded Black Adam prior to the film’s release, it’s now widely regarded as one of the weakest DCEU entries, but what could have been if Dwayne Johnson’s DC debut were a success?

That is what fans wanted to know as the question was posed in the DC Cinematic subreddit. As is pointed out, Black Adam was the last film to come out before the new plans for the universe were unveiled. The movie bombing at the box office followed by the announcement of a complete reboot does seem like some pretty convenient timing.

“Obviously, Black Adam was a complete box office bomb, though I figured it was also the DCEU’s last chance before Warner Bros made the final decision over whether to go for the full reboot or not. It seemed to be paving the way for a new direction in the DCEU.”

What could have been

Could Dwayne Johnson have saved the old regime at DC? Warner Bros. certainly looked it was putting all its eggs in that basket and, had the film been a success, would we have kept Henry Cavill as Superman and Ben Affleck as Batman? Would there have been some hope for the SnyderVerse? Would James Gunn have never become the head of the DCU? Did Johnson really have that much sway over the entire future of the DCEU?

All very important questions, and some fans think they have the answers.

“Six months before the movie was released Zaslav said that he wanted a ten years plan with Superman and Batman as the face of the brand. l remember reading somewhere that James and Peter started planning their vision at least a month before the movie was released. So no Black Adam’s success wouldn’t have changed anything.”

“The only scenario where Black Adam completely changes the trajectory of DC is if it had somehow become an Avatar-sized hit and made a ridiculous amount of money, proving the Rock’s value as the top actor of all time or something like that.”

“Let [sic] be real they took one look at that movie and they knew it was not going to be a success.”

A reboot was inevitable

While it’s interesting to think about the possibilities, when you look at the shift that was going on within Warner Bros. it’s obvious that there was already a backup plan in motion that would act as a course correction for the DCEU.

Okay, we’re getting a little dramatic, but the takeaway is that Dwayne Johnson would never have been able to save the DCEU. It was already doomed, even in a universe where Black Adam was a wild success, the wheels were in motion for a complete reboot. Maybe it’s a canon event that the DCEU should be rebooted.

Benedict Cumberbatch’s MCU casting came approved by Doctor Strange himself

Marvel has pretty much perfected the art of breaking the fourth wall by now, but having the comic book characters react to the studios’ casting choices to play them in live-action might just be the peak.

Reddit has dug up an issue from 2016’s The Unbelievable Gwenpool, which was published just months before Doctor Strange found its way to theaters in November, where the time wizard himself gives Benedict Cumberbatch’s casting a thumbs up. A little sneak promo for the film, but also a great, fun nod at the interconnectedness of the characters across different media.

“Benedict Cumberbatch, eh? Sure, I could see that. Fascinating. The people and events of our world leave… footprints in yours. Little recordings, retellings,” Strange tells Gwenpool in this comic panel. Gwenpool is actually from the real world aka ours, where she is a massive fan of Marvel comics, thus giving her the “superpower” of knowing what comes next in the comics based on the common structure of its storytelling.

The implications of this conversation are mind-boggling. Does this mean Benedict Cumberbatch exists as an actor in the world of The Unbelievable Gweenpool? Unless Strange has multiversal cable and watches Sherlock from our timeline.

It’s a fact that the casting team at Marvel has done some of the best work in the entire superhero genre over the last few decades, so it’s not surprising that Doctor Strange approves of his live-action counterpart. Most cast members feel like they were born to play their respective roles across the movies and television shows. At this point, whether comic book Tony agrees or not, Robert Downey Jr. is Iron Man.

Christopher Nolan remains open to Bond but stayed silent on ‘Star Wars,’ so the speculation naturally begins

Christopher Nolan is having a moment in the sun. His nuclear biopic Oppenheimer may have failed to overcome the awesome power of Barbie, but a $174 million international opening weekend is nothing to sniff at – especially for a three-hour historical biopic.

After Oppenheimer, many are looking ahead to Nolan’s next project. At this point, he’s able to get any movie greenlit he chooses, though some fans are holding out hope he’d sprinkle a little of that Dark Knight trilogy magic on an existing IP. Hopes were raised just days ago when he teased that he’d jump at the chance to direct a Bond movie.

That being said, a door may have opened in a galaxy far, far away. In an interview with Hugo Travers, he was given some rapid-fire questions to which he could answer “Yes,” “No,” or “Pass” (indicating that he doesn’t want to answer that right now). When Nolan was asked if he wanted to direct another superhero movie he said “No,” but when he was asked about Star Wars, he said “Pas.s”

This is a long way from confirmation, but at minimum it means it’s possible. A Christopher Nolan Star Wars is difficult to imagine, and we have no doubt the strong-willed filmmaker would butt heads with Lucasfilm executives over story, tone and characters.

The fan reaction on Reddit indicates this would be a dream come true, though as one neatly summarizes: “Nolan needs complete control of his films. Disney needs complete control of their films. These two things are not compatible.”

But, if the company wanted a heavyweight director to bring some new credibility to Star Wars (perhaps doing the equivalent of Andor on the big screen) it’d be hard to find a better candidate. Whether this will ever happen is anyone’s guess, though we’d kill to see it.
