Google has officially announced that it’s shutting down Allo, ending the run of yet another failed Google chat app experiment. The news isn’t entirely unsurprising, given that Google had already paused investment in Allo back in April. Back then, the head of the communications group at Google, Anil Sabharwal, noted that “[Allo] as a whole has not achieved the level of traction we’d hoped for.”

Allo will “continue to work through March 2019,” Google says, and users will be able to export their conversation history until then.

But the company’s first 5G phone, announced this morning at the Qualcomm Snapdragon Tech Summit in Maui, won’t be cheap. OnePlus CEO Pete Lau tells The Verge that his company is working on both the new 5G phone and existing 4G phones in parallel, and that he expects his 5G phone will likely cost $200 to $300 more. “It’s hard to know because there’s a lot of specifics still to look at, but it’s likely in the neighborhood of $200-300 more,” Lau says, via translator.

Long-awaited survival game Below is out next week

Capy, the game developer behind beloved indie gems Super Time Force and Superbrothers: Sword and Sorcery EP, is finally ready to release its next big title. Called Below, the moody roguelike survival game has been in the works for five long years, and now it’s coming out next week on December 14th. The title remains an Xbox console exclusive, but you can also play it on PC. There’s no word yet on pricing.

Epic Games is getting sued for turning rapper 2 Milly’s dance into a Fortnite emote

Fortnite creator Epic Games is now facing a lawsuit from hip-hop artist 2 Milly, who claims the game developer ripped off his “Milly Rock” dance move by turning it into an in-game emote players can earn after spending real money, according to a report from Variety. The lawsuit was filed in California district court on Wednesday.

The lawsuit marks the first formal legal challenge against the widespread game industry practice of appropriating pop culture, like dance moves and memes, and turning it into virtual items for sale. Milo Yiannopoulos lasted a single day on Patreon before getting banned

Former Breitbart editor Milo Yiannopoulos attempted to fund a “magnificent 2019 comeback” on the crowdfunding platform Patreon, only to be banned after one day. Yiannopoulos’ Patreon campaign, whose banner image is seen above, garnered around 250 patrons pledging an unknown amount of money before being kicked off the service.

“Milo Yiannopoulos was removed from Patreon as we don’t allow association with or supporting hate groups on Patreon,” the company said in a tweet. Leaked emails have linked Yiannopoulos to white supremacists, and a 2016 video showed him singing karaoke in a bar while audience members, including white nationalist Richard Spencer, gave Nazi salutes.

Canada arrests top Huawei executive on suspicion of violating Iran sanctions

Canada arrested the chief financial officer of Huawei on suspicion of violating US sanctions against Iran, according to The Globe and Mail. The CFO, Meng Wanzhou, was arrested in Vancouver on Saturday at the request of US law enforcement and is facing extradition to the US.

It’s an extremely high-profile arrest, the first major break in a probe that has mostly been kept from the public and only after long-harbored suspicions about Huawei have become widespread. Meng happens to be the daughter of Huawei’s founder and CEO Ren Zhengfei, a former People’s Liberation Army engineer whose connection to the Chinese Communist Party has contributed to the suspicions of US intelligence agencies. Meng also serves as deputy chair on Huawei’s board.

Creating biologically accurate emoji representations of animals and insects are an issue for developers at Apple and Google, and the most recent example is no exception.

Apple’s squid emoji, which was integrated in 2016, is on the receiving end of scorn from the scientific community following a tweet from the Monterey Bay Aquarium team. The team addressed a serious misdeed on Apple’s part, in an effort to bring attention to sea life in general for ocean awareness. The squid in question, seen in the tweet below, is actually upside down, according to the team. The siphon should appear behind this little fella’s head, not on his face.

Andy Serkis Not Ruling Out A Snoke Return In Star Wars: Episode IX

It was a template-breaking moment in Star Wars: The Last Jedi when Supreme Leader Snoke was killed off before the film had even reached its climax. When the villain was first introduced in The Force Awakens, many viewers immediately interpreted him as the Sequel Trilogy’s Emperor Palpatine equivalent, making it virtually a given that the character would be sticking around until Star Wars: Episode IX, and ever since Rian Johnson’s divisive feature suggested otherwise, fans have been scrambling for clues of Snoke’s return.

Despite such speculation, it’s looking these days like Andy Serkis’ character is probably out of the game, though the actor himself seems to be having fun toying with his fans over the possibility of coming back, telling Hey U Guys:

“I emailed [director] J.J. [Abrams] and said, ‘Let me know how things are going and how exciting it all is.’ Of course, I’m very keen to see how the family’s getting on. Who knows, Snoke might come back, I’m not saying anything. I’m only making that up. I’m totally just rumor-spreading for the sake of it, but anything can happen.”

This doesn’t sound like the most convincing of teases, but either way, you can bet that the fans will continue to spin their theories right up until the day Abrams’ trilogy-closer arrives.

The fact is that if Serkis were to come back for Episode IX, then he’d be in no position to spill the twist anytime soon, with those notorious non-disclosure agreements keeping the whole cast tight-lipped. We’ve seen this in recent interviews with Adam Driver, who’s dodged questions from journalists about the fate of Kylo Ren and even kept mum on some seemingly innocent subjects for fear of letting something slip.

Mark Hamill, meanwhile, continues to receive queries on next year’s release, and every now and then, and he likes to use the opportunity to troll his fans a little.
