Christoph Waltz Reportedly Eyed For Salem’s Lot Remake

Christoph Waltz was 30 years into his career before he became a household name, and in terms of Hollywood breakthrough roles, they don’t come much better than the Oscar-winning Colonel Hans Landa in Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds.

The filmmaker lucked out when he stumbled upon an actor that spoke fluent English and French as well as his native German, not to mention more than a little Italian for good measure, who also happened to be an incredible actor. Landa is one of the most memorable movie antagonists of the 21st Century, flipping from cold, calculating and menacing to funny and charismatic on a dime.

Lightning struck twice when he scooped a second Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor when he re-teamed with Tarantino for Django Unchained, but in the decade since many of his most prominent gigs have seen him typecast as a sneering villain for the most part. However, a new rumor claims he could be set for a meaty role in the Salem’s Lot remake, with Waltz reportedly being eyed for the role of Straker.

James Mason and Donald Sutherland previously played the character in the 1979 and 2004 adaptations, so it’s clearly a part that requires no shortage of gravitas and presence. The initial report also names Jake Gyllenhaal as the top choice for Ben Mears, and the prospect of seeing two such hugely talented stars opposing each other as part of a vampiric Stephen King adaptation is a tantalizing one to say the least.

For now, though, neither Waltz nor Gyllenhaal are officially attached to Salem’s Lot, but if they do sign on the dotted line then it instantly becomes arguably the single most exciting King project on the horizon.

[SPOILERS] Will Reportedly Return To Life In Army Of The Dead Sequels

For a guy that hates being compared to his former in-ring rivals and Hollywood contemporaries Dwayne Johnson and John Cena, Dave Bautista has starred in just as many broad, effects-driven projects as they have, despite blasting the former’s acting abilities and laughing off suggestions of a buddy movie with the latter.

In addition to his stint as the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Drax the Destroyer, Bautista has also appeared in heightened martial arts flick The Man with the Iron Fists, sci-fi sequel Riddick, fantasy adventure The Warrior’s Gate, Denis Villenueve duo Blade Runner 2049 and Dune, James Bond outing Spectre and more, while he’s next set to star in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, high concept actioner Universe’s Most Wanted and George R.R. Martin adaptation In the Lost Lands with Resident Evil duo Paul W.S. Anderson and Milla Jovovich.

In fact, the 52 year-old even turned down a role in The Suicide Squad that was written specifically for him by James Gunn, which ironically ended up going to Cena, in order to board Zack Snyder’s apocalyptic heist blockbuster Army of the Dead instead. He may have taken a bullet to the brain before the credits roll, but insider Daniel Richtman claims that Bautista’s Scott Ward will be back for sequels.

How, you may ask? Well, it’s pretty vague, with the tipster’s explanation stretching no further than it’ll happen “somehow”, but when you’re talking about a universe where zombies f*ck, some of them are robots in disguise and there’s also a potential time loop, Area 51 and extraterrestrials lurking in the background of the mythology, even the most credulity-stretching explanations for Bautista’s Army of the Dead comeback can’t be ruled out.

Jason Momoa Praises Zack Snyder’s Justice League

As you’d expect, given that Zack Snyder is the man directly responsible for taking Jason Momoa’s career to the next level, the actor has always been effusive in his support and praise for the man that initially hired him to be part of the DCEU.

Momoa first went in to audition for the role of Bruce Wayne in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which would have been a very interesting choice in itself, leading to the filmmaker believing he’d make for an excellent Aquaman instead. The Justice League director fought hard to have the former Game of Thrones star cast as Arthur Curry, who went on to headline the highest-grossing DC Comics adaptation in history.

As well as securing a life-changing gig, Momoa was a proponent of the mythical Snyder Cut from the very beginning, and revealed long before it was officially announced to be in the works for HBO Max that he was one of the first people to see the assembly cut that eventually became the four-hour streaming exclusive.

In a new interview, Momoa heaped praise on Snyder’s intended vision for Justice League, despite being one of the handful of key cast members who didn’t shoot any additional footage, along with Henry Cavill’s Superman and Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman.

“Listen, I love Zack, and that’s kind of what I signed up for, whatever, eight years ago, is to have his vision. And you know, the cool thing about that four-hour piece is that I didn’t reshoot anything. Like that was all there. So it’s interesting when people come up to me and they’re like, ‘Oh, I really love this, and it was so detailed, and it explained so much’. I’m like, ‘Yeah, that’s what we went and shot’. I didn’t have to redo anything.”

So, you know, because of the tragedy I’m happy we made one version, but I’m really happy that we got to release Zack’s art, and a lot of fans are happy. And the truth of it is, I like the four hours! And normally we watch shows that are, you know, it’s just a four-part series. So, I like the extended version and spending time with the characters.”

Any actor to have worked with Snyder tends to have nothing but good things to say about the experience, and while his cut of Justice League has ostensibly ended his association with the DCEU, Momoa will be back in front of cameras this summer when James Wan’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom starts production, looking to join its predecessor in the billion-dollar club.
