Your Amazon Echo or Google Home could be fooled by a laser ‘speaking’ words
As handy as smart speakers can be, the fact they’re always listening can make them a little creepy — remember how smart speaker makers were caught using humans to listen to voice recordings? Now, researchers have demonstrated a potential new security risk: it’s possible to issue commands to smart speakers with lasers instead of spoken words, as Wired reports.
The researchers found that by changing a laser’s intensity to a specific frequency and pointing the laser directly at a smart speaker’s microphone, they could make the microphone interpret the laser as if it were sound, letting them issue a command to the voice assistant powering the device. And it seems like practically every voice assistant may be vulnerable to this vector of...

Roland Emmerich Says Independence Day: Resurgence Was A Mistake
Man, this is a big day for decades-later sequel news. Before we start though, I have a question for you all: Does anyone even remember Independence Day: Resurgence coming out? I barely do, and I’ve seen the entire thing twice, if you’d believe it. Both were for free, don’t worry. I kinda wish it hadn’t been made, though. And you know who agrees with me? The director, Roland Emmerich.
Sitting down with Yahoo to promote his upcoming WWII flick Midway, Emmerich expressed serious regrets over his decision to make what he knew to be a subpar film:
“I just wanted to make a movie exactly like the first, but then in the middle of production Will opted out because he wanted to do Suicide Squad. I should have stopped making the movie because we had a much better script, then I had to really fast, cobble another script together.”
Will Smith’s lack of presence was certainly felt in the final movie that Resurgence became. Sure, we had Goldblum and a spooky, crazed Bill Pullman, but gosh dangit, we needed the Fresh Prince. I highly doubt that him being in the film would have made it much better at all though, if I’m being honest, as decades-later sequels are always hit-or-miss, and this was one heck of a miss.
Later in the interview with Yahoo, the maligned director admitted that “I should have just said no because all of a sudden I was making something I criticized myself: a sequel.”
Sadly, neither Emmerich or Will Smith have been on a hot streak in recent years. Emmerich’s tone-deaf Stonewall alienated audiences, and Smith’s Gemini Man was a huge, massive bomb. Nobody’s time in the sun can last forever, right?
It’s a bummer, honestly. It’s not that I’m against revisiting old properties. With a new coat of paint, a rusty old flick can shine like the best of ’em. More often than not, however, these follow-ups are nothing more than cash grabs made by studios catering to audience’s ever-increasing demand for content. Independence Day: Resurgence was a victim of nostalgia…and Suicide Squad. Never forget.

Cruella Set Photos Give Us A Fresh Look At Emma Stone And Her Dogs
New photos from the set of Disney’s Cruella give us a fresh look at Emma Stone portraying the villainous Cruella de Vil in all her wickedness and depravity.
The Mouse House’s continuous trend of remaking their classic movies in the form of live-action will take an interesting turn with the return of Cruella de Vil in an all-new origins story about the events that led to her becoming a monster. We’re still unsure as to how Cruella will be portrayed though, whether in a manner that humanizes her, much like Maleficent, or in a scenario that sets her up as an antagonist for future movies.
With almost two years to the film’s premiere, there isn’t a whole lot of information to share. A first look at Cruella de Vil was released during D23 though and reports indicated the movie will take place in 70s London. Now, a couple of new set photos depicting Emma in the infamous fashion designer’s costume and Joel Fry as Jasper, Cruella’s comic-relief lackey, have been posted online.
While we’re not really used to seeing the La La Land star dress up as a fur-obsessed dog-abducting villain, there’s no denying she looks stunning in her blonde wig and leopard jumper. Even Jasper with his three-piece suit and fur-lined overcoat looks every bit the witless evil henchman.
Cruella will be based on The Hundred and One Dalmatians by Dodie Smith and Walt Disney’s 1961 animation of the same name. It’ll be directed by Craig Gillespie, whose credits include the acclaimed 2017 movie I, Tonya and also stars Emma Thompson as the Baroness, an antagonistic character who plays a pivotal role in Cruella’s dark turn. Nicole Kidman was previously eyed for the role, but it ultimately went to Thompson. Other cast members include Paul Walter Hauser as Horace and Mark Strong, Emily Beecham and Kirby Howell-Baptiste in unspecified roles.
Cruella will hit the theaters on May 28th, 2021.

Here’s How John Krasinski And Emily Blunt Could Look In The Fantastic Four Reboot
With the Fantastic Four set to join the MCU in the coming years, Marvel will have to recast Reed Richards and Sue Storm yet again. So far, while Ioan Gruffudd, Jessica Alba, Miles Teller and Kate Mara have done their best in the 2005, 2007 and 2015 movies, we’ve yet to get a definitive version of either Mr. Fantastic or Invisible Woman on the big screen. But fans know who they want to see play the pair next: John Kraskinsi and Emily Blunt.
The real-life couple, who previously acted opposite each other in A Quiet Place, have long been the internet’s favorite choice to play Marvel’s first power marriage. But if you’re still not won over by the idea, take a look at this awesome piece of fan art that puts Krasinski and Blunt in costume as Reed and Sue, with the pair showcasing their stretching abilities and invisibility/force fields.
Both Krasinski and Blunt have been considered for Marvel roles before now, with the former Office star being up for Captain America back in the day and the Mary Poppins Returns actress once in the running for both Black Widow and Peggy Carter. What’s more, We Got This Covered’s info is pointing to Marvel considering bringing the pair on board as the Richards. So, all in all, there’s a good chance that this artwork and the dreams of many fans could come true.
Following the rights being returned from Fox, Kevin Feige confirmed at this summer’s Comic-Con that a Fantastic Four reboot was on the way, further promising that it would be the best cinematic take on the First Family yet. Still, it’s not a number one priority for the studio right now so don’t expect it to arrive in the near future.

The House That Jack Built Director’s Cut Coming To Blu-Ray
One of the most controversial films in recent memory will be available for everyone to watch in the not-so-distant future. The House That Jack Built is officially heading to DVD and Blu-Ray with an extended Director’s Cut early next year for viewers to cringe while they binge.
The polarizing psychological horror movie divided critics after being shown at the Cannes Film Festival. Some called it a masterpiece, while others thought the feature was “torturous” and “vile.” Half of the audience was so repulsed that they even walked out of the screening.
On top of all of that, director Lars von Trier has said that he wasn’t sure they hated it enough. Now though, fans can decide for themselves what they think when the movie arrives on Blu-Ray on February 4th. Just note that the faint of heart should view at their own risk.
For those unfamiliar with the pic, it revolves around Matt Dillon in the title role of Jack. The audience follows the titular serial killer over the course of 12 years in the 1970s and 1980s in the Pacific Northwest. Through five heart-pounding “episodes,” we watch as Jack recounts each of his meticulous and gut-wrenching murders.
This isn’t like many other darkly comedic slasher pics, however. There are extremely graphic scenes that depict the mutilation of women and children. One viewer went so far as to call it the “one of the most unpleasant movie-going experiences of my life.” While that may dissuade a lot of the easily distraught among us from watching the film, it could also encourage those who love blood and gore.
In any case, The House That Jack Built sounds like a feature unlike any other and the only way to really know how bad it is might be to watch it. Just don’t blame us if you have nightmares afterwards.

Mark Ruffalo Reveals What He Wants To See From Hulk In Future MCU Movies
While the rights issues between Marvel Studios and Universal have failed to see the Hulk get a second standalone movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since the character was played by Edward Norton over a decade ago, the green-skinned superhero has nonetheless become one of the biggest fan-favorites in the entire franchise.
A lot of that is down to Norton’s replacement in the role, with Mark Ruffalo bringing a world-weary sense of charm and a quiet charisma to the often-downtrodden figure of Bruce Banner, as well as striking up quite the double-act with fellow ‘Science Bro’ Robert Downey Jr. During his time as part of the MCU, Ruffalo has gone from rage-fueled monster in The Avengers to one half of an intergalactic bromance in Thor: Ragnarok, with Avengers: Endgame giving us the best of both worlds in the form of Smart Hulk.
That’s already a lot of ground been covered character-wise, but Ruffalo still has some ideas for where he thinks the Hulk should go next. In an interview alongside Kevin Feige, the 51 year-old all-but-guaranteed that he would return to the MCU, and admitted that he could see Banner acting as a mentor to some of the franchise’s newer characters.
“I’d like to see him hang out with some of the new folks, you know? Maybe be like a guru to some of the younger ones.”
The Hulk has already been around the block countless times with the MCU’s older characters over the course of four Avengers movies and Ragnarok, and with the wealth of new characters set to be introduced in the future, it would make sense to have one of the elder statesmen of the franchise mix it up with some new blood.
Introducing Smart Hulk in Endgame has also opened up countless possibilities about where his journey could go next, and as a well-traveled veteran on both the Earthbound and cosmic sides of the MCU, he could literally turn up anywhere and it wouldn’t be too much of a stretch.
