Google Duplex expands to ‘small group’ of Pixel owners
Google Duplex, the automated service that calls up businesses to make bookings on your behalf, has received a limited public launch, reports VentureBeat. In a statement, Google said that it’s starting its “slow rollout” of the service, which is now available to a “small group” of Google Pixel phone owners in “select cities.” As well as expanding its availability with users, the service can also call restaurants that Google hasn’t explicitly partnered with.
As this statement implies, the service has launched in a state that’s very limited — even compared to what Google demoed on stage when it first announced the service. For now, if you’re able to access the service you’ll be restricted to restaurant bookings (so no haircut appointments...

Best Buy’s Pixel 3 sale might be unbeatable: $400 off for Black Friday
At $799 and $899 respectively, Google’s Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL are the most expensive phones Google has ever made, and arguably also the best. But on Thanksgiving and Black Friday, you might be able to get $400 off either Pixel 3 — and you might be able to do it without chaining yourself to Verizon or trading in your current phone.
You see, Verizon is offering that $400 off a number of flagship phones over the next two days, including the Samsung Galaxy S9, S9+, Note 9, LG V40, and the two new Pixel phones. With Verizon’s deal, you’ll only see that savings over the course of two years.
But Best Buy just confirmed to The Verge that it will have its own version of the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL deal, one where the $400 savings happens...

Trump administration criticizes Chinese company’s attempted takeover of Faraday Future
California-based electric car startup Faraday Future might have a strange new ally in its roiling fight with main investor Evergrande: the Trump administration. The Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) issued an update on Wednesday to its “Section 301” investigation into China’s alleged practices of intellectual property theft and technology transfer, and Faraday Future was listed among the many examples cited in the refreshed report.
The USTR says in the report that Evergrande’s $2 billion pledge to Faraday Future is an “illustrative example” of how the Chinese government “directs and unfairly facilitates the systematic investment in, and acquisition of, US companies and assets by Chinese companies to obtain...

A WeChat-powered hotel in China lets you check in, enter your room, and get breakfast through your phone
China’s biggest app, WeChat, partnered with InterContinental to open a smart hotel in Shanghai that lets users book rooms, remotely check in, and use their phones as key cards — all without requiring human assistance. Once they’ve completed their reservation, travelers verify their identity at the hotel through facial recognition and collect their digital key card. Although the hotel is 88 feet underground, it’s connected enough to provide quick internet services, according to a press release it shared with The Verge.
WeChat and its parent company Tencent have been working on developing smart hotel experiences since 2014, but now it’s added facial recognition into the mix for faster identity checks. Traditionally, hotels in China require...

Instagram’s new profile designs emphasize users instead of their follower count
Instagram announced on its press site today that the company is testing out new user profile layouts. “Over the next several weeks, you may see features re-arranged at the top of your profile including changes to icons, buttons and the way you navigate between tabs,” the blog post explains. Your photo grids will be safe, though, so you can breathe easy.
Examples of potential changes can be seen above. The most notable part of the redesign is that follower counts appear to be de-emphasized, as they’re no longer at the top of your profile and are in a much smaller font. Twitter recently made a similar change to its iOS app, as the company thinks about how to prioritize “meaningful” conversation on the platform rather than focusing on...

After delay, Verizon is reportedly getting eSIM support by early December
Verizon is close to adding dual SIM and eSIM support after an initial delay meant its network wouldn’t be able to work with the iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR’s touted dual SIM capabilities. In an internal memo that was leaked to 9to5Mac, Verizon tells employees it’s now expecting to launch dual SIM support with an eSIM and a physical SIM paired together in early December.
Apple initially announced that Verizon, T-Mobile, and AT&T would all support dual SIMs. But Verizon customers ran into a snag: you can only use Verizon’s physical SIM card for your primary line, and if you swap it over to your secondary line, the service gets downgraded to a 2G legacy network instead of LTE. As the carrier realized the secondary line won’t be able to...

The Verge’s guide to tolerable family streaming entertainment
It isn’t always easy to pick something to watch if you’re reuniting with your family over the holidays. Tastes vary radically between generations and individual family members, so does tolerance for sex, violence, profanity, conflict, religious or political messaging, or even specific genres. Each family is different, but in the wide world of streaming media, there’s always going to be something that hits the sweet spot and saves you from having to endure NCIS or The Big Bang Theory again. With that in mind, The Verge staff has assembled a list of streaming films and TV shows that have created enthusiasm in our personal family viewing — or at least a tolerable detente. Maybe these recommendations can help you prepare some companionable...

Star Wars: Episode IX Rumor Teases Connection Between The Emperor And Snoke
Snoke and Emperor Palpatine are a pair with obvious parallels, making it all the more surprising when the former didn’t live to see the final instalment in this current Star Wars Sequel Trilogy. But despite his early demise, Andy Serkis’ villain has remained a subject of ongoing hearsay and speculation, and this latest Star Wars: Episode IX rumor is no exception.
To provide a little context to this report, one thing we already know is that Snoke wore a ring made from obsidian found underneath Darth Vader’s castle on Mustafar. What’s more, it’s been confirmed that the engravings on this accessory represent The Four Sages of Dwartii. It’s through this tidbit that we have one of the character’s lesser-known connections with Palpatine, since the Emperor kept statues of these exact figures in his quarters during his Chancellor days.
All of the the above remains canon to the Star Wars saga, but where the rumor kicks in is with the claim that J.J. Abrams’ next film will feature a scene – presumably a flashback – where Snoke is witnessed sitting in a throne room surrounded by Palpatine’s Dwartii statues.
While it’s not unthinkable that Abrams will find ways to connect Snoke to the wider franchise, there’s certainly reason to doubt this particular report. For one thing, you have to wonder if the filmmaker would really be willing to dig this deep into Star Wars mythology as a means of linking Snoke to his past equivalent. But more to the point, Episode IX rumors related to Snoke and/or flashbacks have become such a cliché by now that this new claim very much gives off the vibe of a late arrival to the trend.
All that being said, if the former Supreme Leader really is getting as much screen time as the rumor mill would have us think, then we’ll find out when Star Wars: Episode IX hits theaters on December 20th, 2019.
