David Harbour Says Hellboy Chops Off Heads, Bathes In Blood

Whether you loved the new Hellboy trailer, hated it, or just sat there confused, not knowing what to make of it, there’s no denying that it definitely wasn’t what folks were expecting to see. After a lot of talk about the reboot being a distinctly darker affair than Guillermo del Toro’s cherished take on the antihero, the teaser’s abundance of one-liners set to an ’80s dance pop soundtrack came as a bit of shock to many, while also leaving a lot of people feeling a bit nervous about the upcoming pic.

Nonetheless, actor David Harbour continues to assure us that we’re in for something dark and brutal, telling Empire the following in a recent interview:

“There’s really a sense that you’re actually killing things, even if they are giants or monsters. You’re chopping their heads off, you’re bathing in their blood and you’re feeling the complex feelings of actually cutting the heart out of another thing. We’re taking the time to deal with the fact that Hellboy is a killer. He’s a weapon.”

So, the actor’s saying one thing while the trailer’s showing us another, but given Neil Marshall’s track record of acclaimed horror efforts like Dog Soldiers and The Descent, maybe this is just a case of misleading marketing.

Still, while the preview wasn’t the dark, violent teaser that some fans expected, we do know that the film will 100% be rated R, suggesting that Lionsgate may just be holding back on all the good stuff. After all, this isn’t the fist time Harbour’s assured us of as much. Just a few days ago, he insisted that the new Hellboy “is gory… it’s like a horror movie. There’s a lot of blood in it. It’s brutal.”

Even if that’s the case, it’ll still be tough for Lionsgate to try and fill the void left by del Toro and actor Ron Perlman, and so far, the fans are more skeptical than ever. But there’s still time before Big Red arrives in theaters and we’ll see if the Hellboy reboot can win over the doubters yet when it premiers on April 12th, 2019.

YouTube faces backlash on Twitter over lifted, uncredited holiday video

When Lily Hevesh opened Twitter and saw YouTube’s Christmas video, it looked very familiar. That’s because it was her own.

YouTube’s tweet doesn’t credit Hevesh at all, or mention her YouTube channel. The tweet also cuts Hevesh’s intro, which acts as a welcome to her channel for those who stumble upon the video. Washington Redskins reportedly backed out of Huawei Wi-Fi deal because of government concerns

Another example of the US government’s unease around Huawei — and efforts to keep the Chinese tech giant’s influence at bay — was reported earlier this week by The Wall Street Journal. In 2014, Huawei reached a deal with the Washington Redskins to provide Wi-Fi in the viewing suites at FedEx Field during games, according to the story. But that agreement came undone after a government advisor issued an “unofficial federal complaint” to the team, citing the same national security concerns that Congress and US intelligence agencies have raised for several years running.

Huawei would have received advertising in the stadium and during Redskins game broadcasts in exchange for handling the Wi-Fi in suites; the Redskins never planned to...

The 40 games we can’t wait to play in 2019

The year is almost over, which means it’s time to start dreaming about all of the great games you’ll be playing in 2019 — and it sure looks like there will be a lot. Next year is shaping up to be packed with notable releases, from the charming world of Animal Crossing to the violent action of Gears of War.

Of course, these are just the games we know about, and there will definitely be plenty of surprises throughout 2019. I’ve also only included games that are actually scheduled for next year, which is why you won’t see big names like Metroid Prime 4, The Last of Us Part II, or Halo Infinite. Same goes for games like Cyberpunk 2077 and Death Stranding that are likely years away from release. Additionally, it’s important to note that some...

Holmes & Watson Is Getting Absolutely Slammed By The Critics

Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law; Jonny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu; Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman; but how about Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly?

Yes, the beloved comedic duo – who found acclaim for their turns in both Step Brothers and NASCAR pic Talladega Nights – can currently be seen headlining Sony’s Holmes and Watson, a new take on Arthur Conan Doyle’s endearing characters that’s been kicking around since back in 2008.

With Ferrell donning the deerstalker hat and cracking cases alongside Dr. John Watson (Reilly), hopes were never high for the film to be a big hit, but with the reviews now in, it turns out that things are even worse than we imagined they would be. Holding a pathetic score of 0% on Rotten Tomatoes (seriously), it’s clear that this is one to skip and below, you can find just a sampling of what folks are saying.

The New York Times:

As the movie stands, smuggling in booze to dispel the sense of dull routine could only help.

THR:

You can feel the flop sweat emanating from the third onscreen pairing of Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly. … Holmes & Watson features the duo parodying Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous characters to devastatingly unfunny effect. Numerous talented British thespians are wasted in supporting roles in this Christmas turkey that, not surprisingly, wasn’t screened in advance for critics. Although making them troop out to theaters Christmas morning is something of which even Ebenezer Scrooge wouldn’t have approved.

IndieWire:

Usually, you’d have to watch the Golden Globes to see this much wasted talent. As it stands, the only compelling mystery about Holmes & Watson is how so many funny people have been squeezed into such an unfunny movie, a movie that isn’t nearly smart enough to recognize how stupid it should have been.

AV Club:

If there are any new jokes left to tell about Holmes, they’re nowhere to be found in the abysmal Holmes & Watson, which might be the worst feature-length film ever made about the ‘consulting detective’ from Baker Street.

Ouch! It’s pretty clear that this is going to be a big flop for Sony, and with the current drought of Sherlock Holmes content we’re facing, that’s definitely a shame. BBC’s Sherlock is on indefinite hiatus and though Robert Downey Jr. will soon return in Sherlock Holmes 3, that’s still a ways away from hitting theaters.

In other words, it’s going to be a while yet before we get some high quality entertainment featuring the iconic detective, though if you’re absolutely craving another encounter with the legendary character, you can always take your chances with buying a ticket for Holmes & Watson.

Jude Law Trains Brie Larson In New Captain Marvel Photo

The MCU fanbase is big on Captain Marvel right now, thanks in no small part to the film’s recent trailer, which arrived earlier this month and gave us a whole lot to process, from dangerous old ladies to Nick Fury’s cute little friend. And only adding to the hype levels is a brand new still that comes to us courtesy of Empire.

Seen in the gallery down below, it’s unclear what exactly’s going on here, but we can see Jude Law’s mysterious character with Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers and he appears to be training her. Unfortunately, the outlet didn’t offer up any hints as to who Law may be playing, but the fans have pretty much nailed it down already, despite Marvel trying their hardest to keep things under wraps.

It’s all but confirmed that he’s going to be taking on the role of Yon-Rogg, a Kree military commander who keeps his eye on events on Earth. He goes on to become one of Captain Marvel’s (the Danvers version) most dangerous foes though, and is also indirectly responsible for her gaining her incredible cosmic powers.

While we’re still a few months away from meeting the MCU’s most powerful hero, this new still from Empire certainly has us excited and it’s becoming pretty clear that so far, folks are liking what they’re seeing of the film. What’s more, Ben Mendelsohn, who plays Talos, had some encouraging words of his own to offer up in a recent interview, saying that Captain Marvel is “something really special,” praising the script in particular as “finely crafted” and “absolutely beautiful.”

Excited yet? We sure are, as the more we see and hear about Carol’s first standalone outing, the more eager we become to finally lay eyes on it. There’s tons riding on Captain Marvel, that’s for sure sure, given that it’s the studio’s first female-led effort and all, but something tells us they’ll be able to deliver.

The Verge 2018 tech report card: Google

2018 should have been a banner year for Google. It marked the 20th anniversary of the company itself, the 10 year anniversary of Android, and the 10 year anniversary of Chrome. But 2018 has been a year of reckoning for most of the big tech giants, and the scales have fallen from everybody’s eyes when they look at Google. From privacy to products to the treatment of its own employees and contractors, the banner is tattered.

I think the story of Google in 2018 is that it has lost some of the trust it previously enjoyed. It’s not totally gone, but it’s eroding — and most critically, that erosion appears to be happening from the inside out. Google’s own employees are showing signs (sometimes literal protest signs) that they are losing trust...

This New Shazam! Trailer Will Cast A Spell Over You

With Wonder Woman 1984 pushed back by a whole seven months, it looks like 2019 will now be the year of Shazam!, at least as far as DCEU releases go. And from everything we’ve laid eyes on so far, it truly seems like the upcoming flick will be unlike any DC movie we’ve seen before.

For one, it’s headlined by Billy Batson, a young boy who finds himself as the unlikely successor to Shazam, an ancient wizard who’s harnessed the god-like abilities of Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles and Mercury. That brings a little levity and lightheartedness to David F. Sandberg’s superhero spinoff, which was sorely missing from Warner’s other comic book movies, like Justice League and Batman V Superman.

And in today’s new international trailer (seen up above), that levity is on full display, with the promo really playing up the laughs and general wackiness of Shazam! It may not be to everyone’s taste, but if nothing else, this drastic change in tone from past DCEU releases should mark the film out as something unique in the genre.

Furthermore, it’s also looking like Shazam! will be a standalone adventure first and foremost, with only a few small references to the wider cinematic universe in which it’s set. If true, that would certainly match up with Warner’s reconfiguration of its fledgling superhero franchise, which will supposedly be bringing us more character-driven films and fewer ensemble pieces in the vein of Justice League.

Said to have more heart and humor than every DCEU movie released thus far combined, Shazam! is all set to light up theaters on April 5th, 2019. And after the unexpected success of Aquaman, it’ll be fascinating to see how it performs at the box office.

Hellboy Sends His Regards To Those On The Naughty List With New Poster

Avengers: Endgame Directors Don’t Know If They Can Top Infinity War

Just a quick browse through the Marvel fandom end of social media – or even a single glimpse at the view count for the first Avengers: Endgame trailer – and it becomes all too clear that the studio has succeeded in their job at getting filmgoers pumped about the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War sequel. But while building hype is one thing, delivering on the hype is a whole other challenge, and in a recent interview with Empire Magazine, co-directors Anthony and Joe Russo admitted that they don’t know if they can top their last success.

When the pair were asked how they plan to meet the expectations set by the phenomenally popular Infinity War, Joe replied, “With a lot of hard work,” before observing that Endgame’s pivotal placement in the MCU will be enough in itself to give the story some emotional heft.

“Whether we top Infinity War or not, I don’t know,” he continues. “But we try to tell the best story we can with these characters. This is bringing to a close the first decade of stories. I think that alone has a dramatic power to it.”

Presumably, the filmmaking pair don’t intend to let the inherent importance of Endgame do all the work for them in keeping viewers invested, but in typical Russo Brothers fashion, Joe remained tight-lipped about the developments in store, saying:

“We’ve sat on the title, we’ve sat on the trailer. The last thing we want to do is give any clues to story structure or tone.”

The team at Marvel Studios are in the slightly awkward position of having to hype up Endgame without actually saying much about the movie, with much of the cast seeming pretty ignorant themselves about the content of the film.

Nonetheless, Joe Russo has insisted in the past that the stakes for Avengers: Endgame will be much higher than they were for Infinity War, but we can judge for ourselves whether the movie really takes its action to the next level when the film hits theaters on April 26th, 2019.
