Mission: Impossible 7 Finally Finishes Shooting After 19 Months

It’s been a long time coming, but it looks as though principal photography on Mission: Impossible 7 has finally drawn to a close, with the latest installment in the globetrotting espionage franchise arguably suffering the most tortured production of the pandemic era.

Cameras first started rolling in February 2020, and the shoot has faced so many setbacks that Paramount even launched a $100 million lawsuit against the insurers after seven separate COVID-related shutdowns. During that time, Christopher McQuarrie and his team have touched down in Italy, Norway, Poland, the United Kingdom and the Middle East, with the current September 2022 bow the fourth different theatrical release date that’s been awarded to Mission: Impossible 7.

As you can see below, crew member Martin Smith confirmed that the mission had finally been completed after a year and a half dealing with the effects of a global health crisis, which is good news for every member of the cast and crew.

Not that Tom Cruise and the rest of the IMF team have much time to put their feet up, though, with the eighth installment still penciled in for a summer 2023 debut. The plan was to shoot Mission: Impossible 7 and 8 back-to-back before the pandemic put paid to that particular notion, so everyone needs to gear up and get ready to do it all over again very soon.

Black Widow Star Wants To Headline A Taskmaster Spinoff

Spoilers are something that the majority of major Hollywood releases fail to avoid, with big reveals and major plot points regularly leaking online weeks if not months ahead of time. With that in mind, the Marvel Studios PR and marketing team deserve immense credit for keeping the identity of Black Widow‘s Taskmaster under lock and key until the movie came to theaters and Disney Plus Premier Access in July.

Most people thought O-T Fagbenle’s Rick Mason would end up being the mysterious villain, something he leaned into on more than one occasion during the buildup, but it was nothing more than classic misdirection. Of course, the jig was pretty much up when the previously-unannounced Olga Kurylenko took such a prominent position in the opening credits, but that didn’t really matter when Black Widow had already started by that point.

The ending of the Phase Four prequel leaves the door wide open for Taskmaster to return in any number of ways, but when asked in a recent interview with GamesRadar is she fancied the idea of headlining her own solo outing, Kurylenko was hardly shy in her response.

“Let me think about it. No, I’m kidding. Of course, I would. Of course. I think it’s important, and it’s closer to reality and how things go in life. And also more believable. I think it makes both of the characters more interesting. Because no one is a straightforward goodie or straightforward baddie, and therefore good people, even when they try to do something good, they just make mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes, even the superhero makes mistakes. And it makes Natasha more complex. It’s not just all perfect. It’ll be boring, right?.”

We’ve already heard plenty of rumors that Taskmaster could be back sooner than expected, and the Disney Plus expansion means that a TV series can’t be definitively taken off the table by any stretch of the imagination either, even if you’d imagine such an emotionless figure would be better suited to a supporting role.

Summer Box Office Up Almost 900% From Last Year

2020 was as close to a total write-off for the theatrical industry as you could get. Christopher Nolan bullishly demanded that Tenet play exclusively in cinemas around the world, and while a $363 million haul was impressive by the dismal standards of last summer, the $200 million blockbuster still posted a hefty loss.

It was dire to put it lightly, and while we remain a long way away from reaching the light at the end of the tunnel, there’s hope that we could get there sooner rather than later. As per Deadline, this summer’s box office takings are up 893% compared to last year, but still nowhere near the levels they used to be.

Movies like Godzilla vs. Kong, A Quiet Place Part II, Black Widow, Fast & Furious 9, Jungle Cruise, Free Guy and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings have all pulled in strong numbers by the standards of the pandemic era, but there aren’t too many titles left on the 2021 release calendar that have the potential to hit similar heights, besides notable exceptions Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Spider-Man: No Way Home and Eternals.

For a more sobering statistic, nine films released in 2019 managed to earn at least a billion dollars globally. Since then, Fast & Furious 9 is the only American-backed studio effort that’s managed to hit $500 million, with the latest outing for Dominic Toretto and the crew sitting on an impressive $710 million. We’re not out of the woods yet, but the signs are promising.
