Don’t Breathe Creators Address Backlash To The Sequel’s Trailer

A blind action hero is certainly a unique concept for a movie, but the first trailer for upcoming sequel Don’t Breathe 2 generated some backlash from fans of the original for positioning Stephen Lang’s Norman Nordstrom as the heroic protagonist second time around, as opposed to the terrifying boogeyman he was in the first film.

The footage boasted plenty of atmosphere, and Lang’s performance looks to be suitably unnerving or creepy, so it’s hard to understand why people are so up in arms. It’s evident from the promo he’s still happy to do a spot of murdering when the occasion calls for it, and there appears to be a big twist hinting that he may have ended up caring for Madelyn Grace’s precocious Phoenix under suspicious circumstances.

In a new interview co-writer, producer and director of the first movie Fede Alvarez and his protege Rodo Sayagues, who makes his directorial debut on Don’t Breathe 2, addressed the criticism, with Alvarez claiming that they’ve deliberately set out to subvert expectations.

Fede Álvarez began his response to the “Don’t Breathe 2” backlash by declaring that, “we like to f*** with people.” He then addressed the issue with more nuance, explaining that he views the film following “The Blind Man” in the same manner as a series like “Game of Thrones” that asks for empathy for similarly monstrous characters. He went on to explain that The Blind Man is “more of an anti-villain. He may think he’s not, or do some things that’ll make him escape it temporarily, but he is. He’s a shadow character, not so much the protagonist. There’s so much more to the story.”

Sayagues then weighed in to say that things won’t be as clear cut as they seem, with every character painted in shades of gray and wrapped in mystery, so who’s to say that we won’t discover the Blind Man is the villain of the piece all along?

“If it’s clear who the good guys and bad guys are, you know who’s gonna make it, right?”

It’s just a few weeks until Don’t Breathe 2 hits theaters, and the box office showings of A Quiet Place Part II and The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It have shown that jump scares are capable of bringing people to the theater, and after the first installment earned almost $160 million globally, there’s already a built-in audience desperate to see what the Blind Man finds himself getting up to next.

Netflix’s New Horror Movie Is The #1 Film Today

Few things are guaranteed in life, but the latest buzzy original movie from Netflix snagging the top spot on the most-watched list 24 hours after debuting on a Friday is at least something we can always rely on to happen. Such is the global reach of the streaming service’s customer base, new is always going to translate to good in the eyes of subscribers.

Following in the footsteps of recent debutants like Army of the Dead, The Woman in the Window, Fatherhood, Xtreme, Oxygen and the entire Fear Street trilogy, an in-house genre film with either a big star or a high concept has rocketed straight to the summit, and it doesn’t get much higher than Blood Red Sky, a vampire thriller told at 30,000 feet.

Blood Red Sky

Reviews have generally been solid across the board, and viewers have clearly been keen to see what all the fuss is about as Blood Red Sky rides a wave of social media buzz and momentum by delivering the sort of trashy fun with high production values that Netflix always tends to do so well.

Of course, the majority of newbies tend to die off in the space of a few days, so we’ll have to wait and see if Blood Red Sky has any sort of staying power, or if it ends up as the latest in a long line of one-weekend wonders. The recent continued success of Fear Street and A Classic Horror Story shows that folks are keen for buckets of blood and gore when it comes to their Netflix selections, which stands the horror hybrid in good stead for maintaining a high position on the charts for at least the next few days.

A Will Smith Bomb Is Finding New Life On Netflix

As the industry has shifted towards brands, franchises and IP being the major selling point behind the biggest movies to hit theaters, the concept of the ‘movie star’ has shifted somewhat. Back in the day, whoever sat above the title on the poster was enough to build an entire marketing campaign around, but those sort of A-listers capable of using only their name to draw in a crowd are dwindling in number.

When you think of actors that possess the rare ability to convince people to watch their movies for the sole reason they’re in it and nothing else, there aren’t many who jump out besides the usual candidates of Tom Cruise, Dwayne Johnson, Tom Hanks, Denzel Washington and Will Smith. Even then, they’re not immune to the odd bomb or two, as evidenced when the latter’s Gemini Man spent a quarter of a century in development hell, only to flop when it finally escaped and arrived in the form of a $138 million clusterf*ck directed by Academy Award winner Ang Lee.

Gemini Man

The concept remains sound, following a veteran assassin who discovers a clone of his younger self has been tasked to kill him, but the execution is way off. The CGI simply isn’t up to scratch, rendering Junior as akin to a weightless video game character any time he’s forced to do anything that isn’t remain completely still, and the action is painfully bland.

Gemini Man was one of the most notorious flops of 2019, losing over $100 million for Paramount, but it’s continually troubled the Netflix most-watched list, probably due to the Will Smith factor. After gaining newfound momentum in both March and May, it’s back again and can currently be found sitting in tenth place on the viewership rankings.

A Terrible Bruce Willis Movie Has Been Dominating Netflix All Week

Between 1988 and 2000, Bruce Willis headlined the Die Hard trilogy, lent support in Pulp Fiction and The Siege, as well as taking top billing in The Last Boy Scout, The Jackal, Armageddon, The Fifth Element, 12 Monkeys and Unbreakable, all of which were either critical or commercial smash hits, and in many cases both.

That’s why he reigned as one of the biggest, most popular and bankable stars in the industry for so long, but it would be fair to say his fall from grace has been rapid. These days, you’re a whole lot more likely to find Willis in your local bargain bin than on your nearest big screen, but you can’t say he hasn’t been prolific.

It feels as though barely a week goes by without a new VOD effort starring the fallen A-lister appears, which is probably because it’s almost the truth. Midnight in the Switchgrass arrived yesterday, just seven days after Out of Death, and we’re getting at least one or two more before the year is out.

Sci-fi dud Cosmic Sin was originally released in March but recently landed on Netflix, where it’s become the latest terrible genre film to post a strong showing, having remained in the Top 10 most-watched all week, proving that a heap of subscribers haven’t been put off in the slightest by that 3% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

In fact, audiences have rated it at 61%, so there’s evidently a huge discrepancy between what the reviews are saying and what the people think. It’s still holding on firm in eighth place, and Cosmic Sin is one of six Bruce Willis movies that can currently be found on the platform if you’re in the mood, even if none of them are what you’d call must-see.

John Carpenter Thinks There Are 2 More Escape From New York Stories To Tell

Legacy sequels are all the rage these days, with countless long-dormant properties being revived and resurrected, telling a new story designed to rebuild a franchise from the ground up, while recruiting a couple of familiar stars to provide some connective tissue.

As much as fans would love it to become a reality, it’s very unlikely that Kurt Russell will be donning the eye patch of Snake Plissken again. John Carpenter almost certainly won’t be stepping behind the camera having been out of the directorial business for over a decade, but the Escape from New York remake continues to try and escape from development hell.

It’s been in the works since 2007, with Gerard Butler and Josh Brolin both being linked with the iconic lead role, while Luther creator Neil Cross, Robert Rodriguez and Leigh Whannell have all signed on at various points. The latter remains attached, but we haven’t heard a peep from the project in well over a year, besides Kurt’s son Wyatt Russell admitting that it would be career suicide for him were he to step into his old man’s shoes as Snake.

Escape-From-New-York-Poster-starring-Kurt-Russell-as-Snake-Plissken

In a new interview, Carpenter wouldn’t exactly confirm or deny what he does or doesn’t know about any new spin on Escape from New York, but he did admit his belief that there are potentially two more stories to tell with Russell Sr.’s Snake.

“He’s a character that Kurt is passionately fond of. He convinced me to do the sequel. There’s probably a third or maybe even fourth story about Snake. I don’t know if we’ll ever make it, but I think that he deserves it.”

As many of his recent performances have show, even at 70 years old Kurt Russell is more than capable of bringing his signature twinkly-eyed charm and gravitas to any role he plays, not to mention he’s still sporting an utterly fantastic head of hair for a man his age. If Whannell’s Escape from New York eventually gains real traction, there are worse ideas out there than a quick legacy cameo.

Gal Gadot Goes Viral After The Olympics Opens With Imagine Cover

All in all, it’s been a tough year for Wonder Woman 1984 star Gal Gadot. After receiving backlash for her tone-deaf message regarding the coronavirus pandemic, the actress also came under fire for how she addressed the recent spike in violence in Israel/Palestine.

To top it all off, cinemagoers and DC enthusiasts had mixed feelings about Patty Jenkins’ sequel, some of which bordered on controversy for some viewers because a lot of the more political themes were seen to be ill-conceived. Now, the Hollywood actress has managed to go viral yet again, this time through no fault of her own.

The 2020 Tokyo Olympics kickstarted yesterday with an opening ceremony that featured many iconic soundtracks from across the pop culture landscape, including scores from Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy, Sonic, etc. John Legend and Keith Urban also performed a version of “Imagine” by John Lennon, but as memorable as that song is, people now jokingly associate it with Gal Gadot.

By that, of course, we’re broaching the aforementioned tone-deaf message that the Fast & Furious star and a group of her celebrity friends shared on social media. Back in March 2020, Gadot gathered a bunch of stars to do a rendition of “Imagine,” to spread the word that “we’re all in this together.” Unsurprisingly, many people, including frontliners and people whose jobs were affected by the pandemic, reacted negatively to the idea.

Now, Twitter users are using this opportunity to take a jab at the actress again, and here are some of the things they’ve been sharing online:

It’s unlikely that people will let Gal Gadot live this one down, but I guess that’s the internet for you. What do you think about this, though? Sound off in the comments down below.

An Awesome Leonardo DiCaprio Movie Just Hit Netflix

It’s been a long time since Hollywood viewed the Western as a hot commodity, so it was only fitting that someone with such a love of cinema history, the genre itself and its spaghetti variant would come along to deliver the best oater the business had seen in a long time.

Not only is Django Unchained the highest-grossing Western ever made, it’s also the biggest box office hit of Quentin Tarantino’s career. It additionally won him his second Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, saw Christoph Waltz go two-for-two when it came to scooping Best Supporting Actor for his work with the filmmaker, and landed a Best Picture nod as well.

Waltz may have stolen the majority of awards season glory, but Leonardo DiCaprio was every bit his onscreen equal as Calvin Candie, subverting several expectations of his own by delivering a chilling and extravagantly villainous performance, something that he’s not exactly been famed for doing during his long and illustrious career.

Django-and-Calvin-in-Django-Unchained

Several films from the Tarantino back catalogue have troubled Netflix’s Top 10 most-watched list after being added to the library recently, so it stands to reason that Django Unchained will do exactly the same now it’s available to stream. It might be 165 minutes long, but the story flies by in a sea of blood and bullets, all anchored by the desire for Jamie Foxx’s title hero to reunite with his wife, no matter who or what gets in his way.

By the end of the weekend, Django Unchained will have more than likely established itself as one of the most popular titles on the platform, which is the least it deserves when it’s arguably the most purely entertaining and action-packed effort in Tarantino’s filmography.

Shazam! Fury Of The Gods Set Photo Reveals Returning DCEU Character

Shooting continues on blockbuster DCEU sequel Shazam! Fury of the Gods, and with the movie filming a lot of footage outdoors, a deluge of set photos have invariably been making their way online. Director David F. Sandberg acknowledged as much, when he revealed that he decided to debut the first official look at Billy Batson’s family in costume so the reveal wasn’t spoiled for the fans by some grainy snaps taken from a distance.

Behind the scenes pictures did give us our first look at Helen Mirren in costume as villain Hespera, though, and now another returning character from the first film has been confirmed. Most folks probably weren’t expecting Djimon Honsou to appear as the ancient wizard who first bestowed our young hero with his powers after deeming him pure of heart, but as you can see below, he’s back in action.

Having already fulfilled his narrative obligations by delivering the lengthy exposition dump that filled the uninitiated in on who Shazam! is, where his powers come from and why Billy is deserving of them, fans will no doubt begin speculating furiously as to how and why Honsou fits into Fury of the Gods.

From an entirely speculative point of view, it could be tied to Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam, even though Shazam! Fury of the Gods isn’t releasing until June 2023, eleven months after The Rock’s superhero debut hits theaters. In the comic books, Teth-Adam gets his powers from the wizard just like Billy did, and Zachary Levi has barely been able to contain his excitement about potentially getting to face off against the world’s biggest movie star in a future DCEU project, so maybe Honsou is back to issue an ominous warning.

Eric Bana Reveals His Frustrations At Playing The Hulk

Technology has long since advanced to a point where Mark Ruffalo suits up in a motion capture leotard to get into thick of the action as the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Hulk, with the effects team doing the majority of the heavy lifting in post-production, but that wasn’t the case when Eric Bana played the role in Ang Lee’s 2003 blockbuster.

Despite being the leading man and star of the movie, Bana wasn’t involved at all whenever his giant green alter ego was onscreen, with the rest of the ensemble having to react to a massive rage monster when there wasn’t much more than a crude model being paraded around on set, with the film’s Bruce Banner left sitting on the sidelines.

It was the director who performed the majority of the mo-cap work for Hulk, with Lee even going so far as to tell Bana that he was part of a piece inspired by Greek tragedy, and the filmmaker was making a whole other movie packed with action sequences starring the title hero without him. Unsurprisingly, the actor doesn’t reflect too fondly on his time in the superhero genre, revealing at how frustrated he was by the approach.

“You go from Black Hawk Down where you’re shooting mainly daytime, exteriors, natural light. Boom: out in the world. To suddenly, I’m playing a scientist and I’m in a lab or a house, indoors. There’s this other movie going on with green screen that I have nothing to do with, because that’s the Hulk. It’s the other actors that are playing in that space. So in some ways it felt like a tiny movie because the reality for me was every day was interior, studio, one room, very few big scenes. Lots of dialogue. I don’t like working indoors.”

eric bana hulk

Coming off a boots on the ground war story like Black Hawk Down and heading straight into Hulk must have been a jarring experience, especially when Bana wasn’t required for any of the latter’s marquee set pieces and was effectively hired to deliver a dramatic performance and little else. That’s probably a huge reason why he signed on to Wolfgang Petersen’s Troy immediately afterwards, which gave him the chance to shoot outdoors and sink his teeth into some combat training and practical stunts.

Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse Star Confirms Their Return For The Sequel

The Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Spider-Man: No Way Home is expected to revolve around the multiverse, but even if it lives up to Tom Holland’s billing as the single most ambitious standalone superhero movie ever made, it’s still got a long way to go if it wants to match the levels of critical and audience acclaim that greeted Sony’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

Arguably the greatest animated comic book adaptation ever made, and without a doubt one of the finest superhero stories of the modern era, Into the Spider-Verse scored rave reviews across the board and landed the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. The sequel is in production and heading to theaters in October of next year, but plot details are being kept under heavy guard for the time being.

However, Jake Johnson has confirmed that he will back as Peter B. Parker, the washed-up and disheveled version of the web-slinger. While his return may have been a foregone conclusion looking at how heavily he factored into the original, it’s still encouraging to hear it come straight from the man himself.

“I’ve been working on a contract. I believe Peter B. Parker is making a return. All I know is that I heard nothing for the longest time and I was very sad. I really loved playing Peter B. Parker. I would like to know what happens with Peter B. Parker. I think the way his journey ended in the first movie was very open-ended. So, when I got word that they were working on a deal or figuring it all out, I thought I truly can’t wait to see what the writers came up with.”

Christopher Daniel Barnes’ 1990s animated favorite has been rumored to join the lineup of Spideys, as has Spider-Man India Pavitr Prabhakar, while Kathryn Hahn would love to return as Oliva Octavius. So far, though, the only names officially confirmed are Johnson’s Peter, Shameik Moore’s Miles Morales, Hailee Steinfeld’s Gwen Stacy and Issa Rae’s Jessica Drew, but there will be plenty more to come.

As part of their overall deal with Sony, producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller have been tasked to oversee and entire slate of film and television projects built out from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, so things are just getting started.
