An Awesome Harrison Ford Movie Just Hit Netflix

When it comes to discussing cinema’s all-time greatest action heroes, Harrison Ford‘s name doesn’t come up anywhere near often enough, which is strange when you consider that he played both Han Solo and Indiana Jones, although George Lucas’ Original Trilogy was admittedly more of an ensemble effort than a star-powered venture.

Even outside of those two iconic roles, the actor has proven his chops on numerous occasions. It might have been a generational thing, given that he was much more of an everyman when the musclebound likes of Schwarzenegger and Stallone were dominating the genre in the 1980s, and he was in his 50s by the time the focus shifted to younger, more realistic and relatable figures like Nicolas Cage and Keanu Reeves a decade later.

Air Force One

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade may have arrived in 1989, but Ford’s peak as an action star arguably came in the 90s. In the space of a few years he played Jack Ryan twice in Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger, headlined Best Picture nominee The Fugitive and became Hollywood’s most badass president in Air Force One, which hit big in the summer of 1997.

The concept can pretty much be boiled down to ‘Die Hard on a plane’, but Harrison Ford‘s gruff charisma coupled with Gary Oldman’s memorable performance as an over-the-top Russian extremist created a fantastic dynamic between the hero and villain. Throw in Wolfgang Petersen’s efficient direction and several standout set pieces and you’ve got a recipe for blockbuster excellence. Air Force One has been added to the Netflix library as of today, and it’s time for an entirely new generation to discover the joys of watching the Commander in Chief take matters into his own hands.

The Original Mortal Kombat Is Now On Netflix

One of the major recurring criticisms aimed at the recent Mortal Kombat reboot was that it took itself very seriously, to the point that it seemed as though a decision was made at boardroom level to suck most of the fun out of the concept. That being said, it was the wisest move when it couldn’t come close to matching the delirious cheesiness of Paul W.S. Anderson’s 1995 original.

The martial arts fantasy actioner was Hollywood’s fourth attempt at translating a popular video game to the big screen after Super Mario Bros., Double Dragon and Street Fighter, but it was the first that wasn’t universally panned. Mortal Kombat knew exactly what it was, and leaned into the absurdity of the premise to deliver a movie that had no intentions of being high art, but instead sought to deliver earnest entertainment and nothing else.

After bringing in $122 million at the box office, it also reigned as the highest-grossing video game blockbuster for six whole years before Lara Croft: Tomb Raider came along in the summer of 2001. From an artistic perspective, Mortal Kombat is terrible. The sets look cheap, the script is awful and the acting is mostly laughable across the board, with the sole exception of Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa’s Shang Tsung, who was the only member of the cast that seemed to get the memo about what kind of film everyone was making.

Of course, that doesn’t mean Mortal Kombat is a disaster. Far from it, in fact. To this day it remains an unabashed cult classic, and it’s just as fun to kick back and watch now as it ever was, so it’s good news that as of today it can be streamed at the push of a button on Netflix.

Zack Snyder Says Lex Luthor Would’ve Saved The World With A Nuke In Justice League 3

As things stand, the SnyderVerse is still dead and buried, but thanks to the director, we’ve got a pretty clear idea of what he was cooking up for those Justice League sequels that didn’t happen, and probably won’t ever materialize unless something drastically changes.

Instead of the standard superhero formula, Snyder wanted to craft a trilogy that had more in common with The Lord of the Rings than The Avengers, and his four-hour version of the movie certainly set out that particular stall. Following up from the Snyder Cut’s reveal she was pregnant, Lois Lane’s child would have factored into the story, regardless of whether Clark Kent or Bruce Wayne was ultimately revealed to be the father.

We’d get much more from the Knightmare timeline, including details of Jared Leto’s Joker murdering Robin and burning Wayne Manor to the ground, and the series would culminate in what had the potential to be one of the most epic battles ever committed to celluloid. Superman would lead the armies of men, John Stewart would charge into the fight with the Green Lantern Corps, while Aquaman and Wonder Woman would have ascended to their respective thrones and overseen the forces of Atlantis and Themyscira in one final assault on Darkseid and his minions.

However, Snyder just dropped the surprising bombshell in a new interview that Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor wouldn’t only be involved in the climactic showdown, but he’d even save all of humanity himself.

“We talked about that he’d in the final battle, he’s the one that brings the nuke into Darkseid’s spaceship and detonates it himself. It’s kind of like he wasn’t down with the concept of completely destroying mankind. He didn’t realize that was the bet. So that kind of thing is something he would be capable of. He could go all the way.”

A redemption arc for the nefarious villain may have proven to be divisive, but everything we’ve heard from Snyder surrounding his Justice League sequels is only going to continue infuriating a fanbase still desperate to see them become a reality.
