All 42 Apple Stores in China have reopened

Apple has reopened all 42 of its branded retail stores in China as of today, a company spokesperson confirmed to Bloomberg and Reuters. The stores had all shuttered in early February as China restricted travel in an attempt to slow the coronavirus outbreak, but they have been gradually reopening over the past few weeks.

Apple said that store closures in China, one of the company’s biggest markets, were a primary reason why it was forced to revise its quarterly guidance downward last month. While the situation in China may be improving, Apple is likely to be hit elsewhere as the virus spreads around the world. This week the company closed all 17 of its stores in Italy after the government put the country in lockdown.

Sennheiser’s Momentum True Wireless 2 earbuds combine noise cancellation and excellent sound

Image: Sennheiser

A little under a year and a half after it released its first pair of true wireless earbuds, Sennheiser is back with a follow-up: the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2. The big improvements to the true wireless earbuds are that they support noise cancellation and have much better battery life. There are also some more minor improvements, like the fact that these earbuds are 2mm smaller than their predecessors.

The improvements in battery life are, on paper, at least, pretty impressive. You’ll now get up to seven hours of playback from the earbuds themselves (up from four hours last time around), and using the case gets you 28 hours in total (up from 12). Sennheiser also claims to have fixed the battery drain problems that some users...

Slack commits to paying contractors during shutdown after laid-off baristas protest

Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge

Slack says it will continue to pay contractors while its offices are shut down due to the coronavirus pandemic. The announcement comes after five baristas, who learned last week they were being laid off, wrote a letter to the company that they intended to make public on Friday morning. The letter demanded three months pay and health care.

“It’s hard to overstate how dangerous it is to lose both our salaries and our healthcare during a pandemic that is quickly spiraling out of control,” the former employees wrote.

Many large tech companies have proactively offered to continue paying contractors or employees who cannot return to work because of the shutdowns. Slack...

Tom Hanks Shares Update On His Coronavirus Diagnosis

The Coronavirus infected its highest-profile victim to date this week, with Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson both testing positive for the virus while down in Australia, where Hanks is working on a new Elvis Presley biopic directed by Baz Luhrmann.

Hanks himself announced the unfortunate news on Instagram, telling his fans the following:

“Rita and I are down here in Australia. We felt a bit tired, like we had colds, and some body aches. Rita had some chills that came and went. Slight fevers too. To play things right, as is needed in the world right now, we were tested for the Coronavirus, and were found to be positive.”

As one of the most beloved actors in Hollywood, the reaction to the news was just as you’d expect, with tons of people voicing their concern and worry. After all, though Coronavirus probably won’t kill you if you’re under 50, the risk of death starts to climb once you’re above that age and Hanks is now 63. So, there’s certainly some concern for his well-being.

But it seems the actor is doing just fine, with the Forrest Gump hopping on Instagram earlier tonight to share another update, which you can see for yourself below:

Hello folks. @ritawilson and I want to thank everyone here Down Under who are taking such good care of us. We have Covid-19 and are in isolation so we do not spread it to anyone else. There are those for whom it could lead to a very serious illness. We are taking it one-day-at-a-time. There are things we can all do to get through this by following the advice of experts and taking care of ourselves and each other, no? Remember, despite all the current events, there is no crying in baseball. Hanx

Tom Hanks

So, as stated above, he sounds like he’s in good spirits and doing alright, and we’ve no doubt he’s receiving top notch medical care and attention. With any luck, he’ll be out of quarantine in no time and back to normal. But until then, we wish him and Rita a speedy recovery.

As for the Coronavirus itself, well, it unfortunately shows no signs of slowing down, with the World Health Organization officially declaring it a pandemic this week. With over 125,000 with nearly 5,000 deaths, things are definitely getting pretty bad, but hopefully now that so many major events, theme parks, festivals, and more have been cancelled or shut down, the spread of the virus will begin to slow down a bit.

The April 2nd event for Snapchat developers, advertisers, and creators had already been moved to an online-only presentation amid coronavirus fears, but now the event has been postponed altogether.

“We don’t feel like it would be appropriate to celebrate our partners in the midst of a global health crisis,” Spiegel writes. “I am so grateful for the tireless efforts and hard work of all of our team members working to make SPS possible — and I can’t wait to share all of the amazing things we have created when the time is right.”

Walt Disney World Shutting Down As Well Due To Coronavirus

Just a day after the World Health Organization declared the COVID-19 Coronavirus a pandemic, Disney announced that popular theme parks Disneyland and California Adventure in Anaheim, CA would be shutting down. This came hot on the heels of the closure of Disney land in Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Tokyo due to the virus.

It looks like the company is doing all they can then to ensure the safety of the public, and as the Coronavirus continues to spread rapidly, they’ve now made another big decision, revealing tonight that Walt Disney World will be closing its doors as well. The park will shut down on March 15th and there’s currently no word on when it may reopen. But it will obviously be dependent on how things play out with the virus.

Here’s the Mouse House’s official word on the closure:

“In an abundance of caution and in the best interest of our guests and employees, we proceeding with the closure of our theme parks at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida and Disneyland Paris Resort, beginning at the close of business on Sunday, March 15, through the end of the month. Disney Cruise Line will suspend all new departures beginning Saturday, March 14, through the end of the month. The Walt Disney Company will pay its cast members during that closure period. The hotels at both Walt Disney World and Disneyland Paris will remain open until further notice. The retail and dining complexes, Disney Springs at Walt Disney World and Disney Village at Disneyland Paris, will remain open. Domestic Walt Disney Company employees who are able to work from home are being asked to do so, including those at The Walt Disney Studios, Walt Disney Television, ESPN, Direct-to-Consumer, and Parks, Experiences, and Products. We will continue to stay in close contact with appropriate officials and health experts.”

Of course, Disney is far from the only ones being impacted by the rapid spread of the Coronavirus, with delays to Fast & Furious 9, Mulan and A Quiet Place II, among others, all being announced today and the shocking news that Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson have been infected. Throw in the cancellation/delay of numerous other events, festivals, sporting leagues and more, and it’s clear that panic has gripped the globe.

Unfortunately, it looks like things will only be getting better before they get worse, too, and though this decision was no doubt a tough one for Disney to make, it’s undoubtedly the right one. As mentioned above, there’s no news yet on when the company expects to reopen the park, but we’ll be sure to keep you posted as soon as they announce further details, so stay tuned.

SYFY Hosting A 24-Hour Jason Voorhees Marathon On Friday The 13th

It doesn’t happen very often, but when it does, people tend to take notice. Friday the 13th has once again graced us with its presence, and for some, it’s a very superstitious holiday. This year will be a pretty wild occasion, too, especially for horror fans, as SYFY has decided to air a 24-hour marathon of the Friday the 13th films to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the original movie’s release.

Starting at the stroke of midnight and continuing on for the entirety of the day, the network will unleash Crystal Lake’s most notorious killer on audiences with back to back presentations of the films. The Friday the 13th marathon will feature eight of the franchise’s movies, including the original Friday the 13th, Friday the 13th Part 2, Friday the 13th Part III, Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter, Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning, Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood, Friday the 13th Part VI Jason Lives and Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan. Unfortunately, Jason Goes to Hell, Jason X and Freddy Vs. Jason will not be part of the slasher-fest.

But things really start to kick off around 6 pm when SYFY transforms into Camp Crystal Lake’s Public Access Channel. Lucky viewers will get to experience quirky in-world commercials, counselor recruitment videos and fun PSAs for every Friday the 13th fan to enjoy. SYFY WIRE’s Juan Cadavid, Matt Romano and Whitney Moore will also be around to break down their favorite moments from the franchise.

Of course, it’s still a shame that Jason doesn’t look to have any new big screen outings in the near future, given the messy court case he’s currently tangled up in, but at least fans can enjoy all of his previous mayhem during SYFY’s 24-hour marathon on Friday the 13th.
