One of Robert Downey Jr.’s last movies before he went to prison rebounds on Netflix
The fall and rise of Robert Downey Jr. is one of modern Hollywood’s most heartwarming comebacks, with the actor now clean, sober and one of the biggest names in the business after spending a decade anchoring the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Tony Stark.
RDJ admitted he couldn’t be happier that the internet was less prevalent and social media non-existent during his wilderness years, with the star hitting a succession of new lows towards the end of the 1990s.

Sony officially launches Oscars campaign for ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’
The discourse surrounding the merits of superhero cinema is always bubbling just below the surface of the pop culture conversation, ready to ignite whenever a high-profile industry figure opens their mouth.
Plenty of acclaimed filmmakers have blasted the genre in a very public forum, while Marvel Cinematic Universe architect Kevin Feige maintains that there’s a bias towards comic book adaptations from the major awards bodies, even though Black Panther became the first such title in history to land a Best Picture nomination at the Academy Awards.

Piracy may have cost ‘Black Widow’ $600 million
One of the biggest issues that’s come burdened with streaming services debuting major movies on demand is a drastic increase in piracy, and we’ve gotten to the stage now where torrenting websites are sharing Top 10s of their own to reveal which titles people are refusing to pay for.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Black Widow landed in theaters and on Disney Plus Premier Access back in early July, and it caused a major issue between Scarlett Johansson and the Mouse House. The actress ended up taking legal action against the company for loss of earnings, but the movie itself may have suffered an exponentially worse financial fate.

The divisive adaptation of an unfilmable novel sniffs success on streaming
The word “unfilmable” starts to lose more meaning each time we hear it, if only for the fact countless literary works that were deemed impossible to translate into live-action have done just that, with many of them finding huge success.
Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings, Zack Snyder’s Watchmen, Spike Jonze’s Where the Wild Things Are, Tom Twyker and the Wachowskis’ Cloud Atlas, Ang Lee’s Life of Pi and many more have experienced critical or commercial highs, often both.

Apple pays top dollar to land Brad Pitt racing drama
Much like Netflix, Amazon and Disney Plus, Apple also appear to have a bottomless pit of cash to thrown around in an effort to secure some of the hottest in-development projects in Hollywood, which comes in very handy as the streaming wars continue to get more and more competitive.
Last month, it was revealed that virtually every major platform and studio in the industry was vying for an untitled racing drama that came bearing a raft of big-name talent. Brad Pitt is set to play the lead role with Top Gun: Maverick‘s Joseph Kosinski behind the camera, while Jerry Bruckheimer is part of the producorial team, and seven-time Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton is also involved in some capacity.

Simu Liu shares BTS image from his new movie with Mark Wahlberg
Thanks entirely to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Simu Liu has rocketed from relative obscurity outside of the Kim’s Convenience fanbase to being an international superstar.
Of course, that comes with the territory when you play the title role in a brand new blockbuster from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, one that scored some of the best reviews for any of the franchise’s origin stories, and went down as one of the pandemic’s biggest box office hits.

‘Eternals’ director addresses the movie’s Rotten Tomatoes score
The critical consensus isn’t always the benchmark by which success is measured, but it had to sting Chloé Zhao to come off the back of Best Picture and Best Director wins at the Academy Awards for Nomadland, only to deliver the worst-reviewed installment in the world’s biggest franchise.
Not only is Eternals the lowest-rated entry in the 27-film series on Rotten Tomatoes, but a 47% tally also makes it the only one to have ever dropped below the 60% Fresh threshold, while it additionally suffered the ignominy of landing the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s weakest CinemaScore.

A planned franchise starter that failed horribly bounces back on Netflix
Dylan O’Brien has proven himself as both a blockbuster action hero and engaging leading man in The Maze Runner trilogy and last year’s hidden gem Love and Monsters, while he even managed to emerge unscathed from the wreck that was Paramount’s Mark Wahlberg blockbuster Infinite.
However, when an attempt was made to reinvent him as a straightforward square-jawed badass in a potential franchise starter, things didn’t go so well. O’Brien plays Vince Flynn’s popular literary creation Mitch Rapp in American Assassin, a highly transparent origin story for a rookie CIA agent who doesn’t blink twice when it comes to getting his hands dirty.
