Google’s upcoming call recording feature could also support transcription

Photo by Vjeran Pavic / The Verg

Code discovered in the latest version of the Google Phone app has revealed more details about its unannounced call recording feature, 9to5Google reports. Most intriguing is a snippet of code that suggests the upcoming feature addition could also support call transcription, which would be similar to the Recorder app that the company debuted on the Pixel 4.

The newly uncovered code also gives us an idea of how Google is attempting to overcome the “security and privacy implications” that prevented call recording from being included in Android 10. Code snippets suggest that the app will warn you to comply with local laws while using the feature, and it also appears as though it will play a short audio clip to warn participants when a call is...

Misinformation about the coronavirus is threatening to overwhelm tech platforms

One result of a world in which everyone has more or less equal access to publishing tools has been what’s sometimes called an epistemic crisis: a scenario in which large groups of people muddle along with very different understandings of reality, undermining the ability of elected officials to govern. This might be particularly scary during a catastrophe, when citizens are relying upon their government for accurate and potentially life-saving information. If you can’t trust official government announcements — or you are misled into thinking that an official-sounding hoax is real — catastrophes might begin compounding upon one another.

The global outbreak of a coronavirus that originated in China has given us fresh reason to consider the...

Apple’s Powerbeats 4 appear in latest iOS 13 update

The icon shows the headphones with a cable attached to their rear rather than their front. | Image: MacRumors

Apple could soon launch a new version of its Powerbeats earbuds if imagery discovered in the latest version of iOS by MacRumors is to be believed. The Powerbeats are Apple’s semi-wireless earbuds. The two earbuds are connected together by a single cable but connect wirelessly to a phone over Bluetooth. The last version of these earbuds were the Powerbeats 3, released in 2016.

From the icon, the biggest change with the Powerbeats 4 appears to be their cable location. While the Powerbeats 3’s cables descend from the front of the earbuds while you’re wearing them, the Powerbeats 4’s seem to descend from the back, down from the arms that hook over your ears. MacRumors also notes that they’re likely to include Apple’s latest H1 chip, and...

AI warehouse robots are sharing data to master human jobs

A robot made by Covariant installed in

Right now, in a warehouse not far from Berlin, a bright yellow robot is leaning over a conveyor, picking items out of crates with the assurance of a chicken pecking grain.

The robot itself doesn’t look that unusual, but what makes it special are its eyes and brain. With the help of a six-lens camera array and machine learning algorithms, it’s able to grab and pack items that would confound other bots. And thanks to a neural network it will one day share with its fellows in warehouses around the world, anything it learns, they’ll learn, too. Show this bot a product it’s never seen before and it’ll not only work out how to grasp it, but then feed that information back to its peers.

British Airways suspends all China flights due to coronavirus outbreak

British Airways has suspended all its direct flights to mainland China in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak, Reuters reports. “We apologise to customers for the inconvenience, but the safety of our customers and crew is always our priority,” the company said in an email. BA.com currently shows no direct flights to mainland China, although flights to Hong Kong are unaffected. The company said that flights will be suspended until it receives more information from British officials, according to Bloomberg.

The airline is not the first to have dropped some of its China flights. However, in the case of United Airlines, which announced it would be suspending some of its flights yesterday, the decision was taken due to a “significant decline...

Robert Pattinson Suits Up In Incredible Batman Fan Trailer

This week, director Matt Reeves finally officially announced the start of production on The BatmanSo, what better way to celebrate than with a trailer? Not an actual one, mind you, as we’re still a ways from getting a look at any cleaned-up footage, but this seriously impressive fan trailer that gives us a taste of the epicness in store when Robert Pattinson’s debut as the Dark Knight reaches cinemas next summer.

Created by Youtuber StryderHD, this trailer makes use of various clips from past Batman movies and other Pattinson projects to give us an idea of how he might appear as the Caped Crusader. Several shots from Cosmopolis are used, for instance, as the actor’s look in that film – swept-back hair and sharp suits – is very Bruce Wayne-like. The trailer also showcases Colin Farrell, Zoe Kravitz and Jeffrey Wright, who’ll be appearing opposite Pattinson as the Penguin, Catwoman and Commissioner Gordon, respectively.

Farrell’s villainous turn in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them acts as a good stand-in for his role as Oswald Cobblepot, though set pics reveal the Irish star has increased his weight and – surprisingly – bleached his hair to play the bird-man. Meanwhile, shots from 2004’s Catwoman are used to represent Kravitz’s Selina Kyle. Though hopefully her suit will be a lot better than Halle Berry’s. Finally, clips of Westworld and Source Code bring Wright’s Gordon to life.

Other The Batman cast members not depicted in this trailer include Paul Dano as the Riddler, John Turturro as crime boss Carmine Falcone, Peter Sarsgaard as District Attorney Gil Colson and Jayme Lawson as Gotham City mayoral candidate Bella Real. Expect Matt Reeves to craft a DC-flavored crime/detective thriller, drawing on elements of “Hush” and “The Long Halloween” when the film reaches theaters on June 25th, 2021.

Super Bowl 2020 Movie Trailers: Here’s What To Expect

Hut, hut…action! Here we are, but a scant few days away from the United States’ most watched television event of the year: the Super Bowl. While San Francisco and Kansas City fans are especially excited, everyone else can agree that the ads are also MVPs on Super Bowl Sunday. You know there’s going to be a weird Doritos commercial, possibly a strange, kinda sexist GoDaddy ad, and a bunch of exciting 30-second teasers for movies. And now, we have a pretty good idea of which trailers are going to show up, thanks to The Hollywood Reporter.

For $5.2 million a pop, Universal, Paramount and Disney seem to be the only three studios stepping up to the plate with a sack of money this year. Per tradition, we’re going to be seeing a second glimpse at Fast & Furious 9, following the full-length trailer set to debut this Friday during a Ludacris concert, while Universal also has plans to show us a Minions: The Rise of Gru teaser, which should please the younger ones watching the game.

Elsewhere, while not confirmed-confirmed, it’s very likely that Disney is going to show off its Pixar offerings, Onward and Soul, one of which actually looks interesting (psst, it’s the latter!). And as far as live-action goes, it’s thought that Mulan will get some time in the spotlight, too.

Marvel, per usual, will have a presence as well. THR says that fans can expect another new look at Black Widow, as the studio needs to build the hype for Phase 4, while there’ve been a lot of whispers online about a WandaVision promo also dropping. Though that remains unconfirmed.

Paramount, meanwhile, is coming in strong after missing out entirely on 2019’s ad slate. They’ve confirmed that they’re going to be speeding up Sonic’s advertising with a Sonic the Hedgehog spot, followed up with that new, post-Hillenberg SpongeBob movie with the long title The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run. And while the studio has stayed mum on a Top Gun: Maverick teaser, it’s probably coming, speculates THR. As is another look at A Quiet Place: Part II.

So, there we have it. Nothing terribly exciting or anything we didn’t know about already, but still, all new content is good content, right? I mean, a solid tease can spark that curiosity that studios depend on. If anything, after a boring teaser, we’ll just see Mr. Peanut’s funeral a Budweiser Clydesdale rescuing a puppy from a well or something.

Super Bowl 2020 is going to be one for the ages, I hope.
