Facebook wants financial data from America’s largest banks

Facebook is asking large banks in the US to share their customers’ card transactions, shopping habits, and checking account balances to offer new financial services, as reported by The Wall Street Journal.

In an emailed response to the report, Facebook denies that it’s “actively asking financial services companies for financial transaction data.” It says that it’s simply looking to partner with banks and credit card companies to offer customer service through a chatbot in Messenger or help users manage their accounts within the app. Similar features already exist on Messenger with American Express, Mastercard, and PayPal integrations, but Facebook is looking to expand its partnerships with more traditional banks.

This Netgear Arlo Pro 2 deal includes a free third camera

Home security cameras aren’t always an affordable endeavor, but Netgear’s Arlo Pro 2 is a little cheaper today on Amazon. When it launched in early 2017, $479 got you the cheapest kit, which included a base station and two of the weatherproof cameras. Today’s deal on Amazon for $449 includes all of that, plus an extra camera. For reference, each additional camera costs around $200, so this is quite the discount if you have more areas, either inside or outside, that you want to keep tabs on.

The Arlo Pro 2 cameras are rechargeable and work wirelessly, meaning setup is fast and there’s no need to call an electrician to set them up. And when it comes to battery performance, Netgear claims that these cameras keep their charge for up to six...

The Essential Phone is being upgraded to Android 9 Pie on the same day as Google’s Pixels

The Essential Phone is getting Android 9.0 Pie on day one — just like Google’s own Pixel smartphones. Essential is rolling out the major OS update today. The company has routinely been releasing the last few Android 9 betas just hours after Google made them available, and now its one and only smartphone is getting Pie’s features months before you’ll find them on devices from Samsung, LG, Motorola, and the rest. This is a thing that just doesn’t happen nowadays. The quick rollout is due in part to Google’s work on Project Treble in Android Oreo, but clearly the Essential team has made speedy updates a priority.

For a company that looks to be struggling to survive, this is pretty commendable. Essential continues to regularly deliver...

Now that Android P has a name: what will Google call Android 10 Q?

How to test out Google’s Digital Wellbeing features on Android 9 Pie right now

The various Digital Wellbeing features that Google revealed last spring — a dashboard to show your smartphone usage habits, app limit timers, and a “wind down” mode to help you focus on going to sleep — are not included in today’s release of Android 9 Pie. But if you have a Pixel device and you’ve already installed the latest OS update on it, you’ll be able to try out those software tools ahead of their official launch sometime this fall. The beta starts right now.

Google says that trying out these Digital Wellbeing features does not require joining the Android beta program; you can continue running a stable version of Android 9 Pie while testing the Dashboard, app timers, and wind down. So that’s pretty great.

Disney’s live-action Star Wars show might cost upwards of $100 million for 10 episodes

Details on Disney’s forthcoming streaming platform are thin. We know it’ll have Star Wars and Marvel films and shows (although it appears that the original films won’t be exclusive to the service), it’s expected to launch in 2019, and it’ll be “substantially cheaper” than Netflix. A New York Times profile of the executive in charge of the platform sheds a bit more light, hinting that the company will put some incredible resources into its productions.

Former film marketing chief Ricky Strauss will lead the service as its president of content and marketing. He has long overseen Disney’s larger marketing efforts, promoting movies like Black Panther and The Force Awakens.

The profile also highlights the upcoming live-action Star Wars t...

Android 9 Pie is available for Google Pixel phones today

Google has announced that the final, shipping version of the newest Android update is available for all Pixel phones today. And, as usual, it has announced a name to go along with the over-the-air update: “Android 9 Pie.”

Android 9 Pie’s headline features are the same ones that we revealed back in May: a “Digital Wellbeing” dashboard, a new gesture-based navigation system, and other AI-enhanced improvements to the UI. It also received many subtle improvements to the overall look of the software, including a new status bar that’s designed to work better with notches.

However, the official release will not include all of the features that Google announced at Google I/O. The main things that will be missing are the Digital Wellbeing...

Silicon Valley strikes back against Infowars: all the news about Alex Jones’ platform battles

Following Apple’s removal of Alex Jones’ podcasts from the iTunes Store, both Facebook and YouTube made the decision to remove the conspiracy theorist and popular alt-right figure, along with his Infowars network, from their respective platforms on August 6th. While Facebook cited hate speech violations for its removal of four InfoWars-related pages, YouTube said Jones circumvented a prior 90-day live-streaming ban by using other channel owners’ accounts, leading to its permanent ban.

The decision to remove Infowars is sure to have profound effects on how technology companies moderate their platforms in the future, as well as how conservative voices and fringe groups on the internet perceive their ongoing culture war with Silicon...

Early Drafts Of Avengers: Infinity War Included Thor’s Grandfather Bor Burison

Avengers: Infinity War is a film – nay, a cinematic event – with many moving parts.

Chief among them is Thor Odinson, who must journey across the cosmos in search of a weapon capable of killing the Mad Titan himself, Thanos. It’s a quest which steers him in the direction of Nidavellir, home to Eitri (Peter Dinklage) and his dwarven kin, ultimately leading to the creation of Stormbreaker.

But as Infinity War co-director Joe Russo revealed on the film’s commentary track (h/t CBM), early drafts of the Marvel epic shipped Thor off on a journey to find his grandfather, Bor Burison, who appeared briefly during the opening moments of The Dark World.

We explored a lot of different ideas of where Thor could go for that weapon. We even had versions of the story at one time where he was going to visit this sort of ghost of his dead grandfather – which was one version we were playing with that we didn’t end up using. I am happy where we had settled.

It would’ve resulted in a totally different character arc for Thor, who returns to Wakanda in the nick of time. How did Marvel’s God of Thunder know that the fate of the world – the fate of the universe, really – rests within Africa’s crown jewel? Simple: Thor knew Thanos was on the prowl for those all-powerful Infinity Stones, even if it’s still somewhat unclear how he was able to pinpoint the exact location of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

Perhaps it’s a case of suspending our disbelief? Avengers: Infinity War beams onto Blu-ray and DVD next Tuesday, August 14th. And if you simply can’t wait, you’ll be pleased to know that the MCU’s crowning achievement is already available via digital means.
