MacBook Air vs. iPad Pro is a choice between the past and the future
At yesterday’s Apple event, I saw a company returning to its finest form. Apple paid overdue attention to its stalwart MacBook Air and Mac mini, introduced a much leaner and more powerful iPad Pro, and fixed the design disaster that was the Apple Pencil’s charging. You don’t have to be an expert analyst to forecast bumper holiday sales for the Cupertino team.
In crafting its most compelling iPad and MacBook Air to date, Apple also created a major headache for people like me. I’m a member of that classic Intel ultrabook demographic whose computing needs are light, but constant. You won’t catch me doing 3D modeling or 4K video production on my laptop, but I do a litany of small tasks online, in a word processor, or in Adobe’s Lightroom....

Spotify is giving family account owners a free Google Home Mini
If you’re the account owner on a Spotify Premium Family plan in the US, you can get a free Google Home Mini from the streaming service through the end of the year, Spotify announced today. Spotify has partnered with Google to give out the voice assistant to account owners on its family plan who sign up through the link here.
On the surface, it may seem like a nice holiday giveaway for Family plan users (and it is in some respects). But with the growth of Amazon Music largely on the back of the Echo and the rise of smart speakers, which may be in 50 percent of US homes before the end of the year, it’s also a strategic move for Spotify. YouTube Music and Google Play Music are still far from serious competition for Spotify, but Amazon’s...

The dual-screen Nubia X solves the notch problem with extreme over-engineering
As if October wasn’t already packed full of new product announcements, China’s Nubia is today hosting a launch event for its new flagship called the Nubia X. Leaked ahead of the big unveil, this device takes a pretty extreme approach to solving the notch problem: it puts a second display on the back, removing the entire need for a front-facing camera. We’re not talking e-paper displays like you had on the YotaPhone, this is a full-sized color screen, albeit with some fat bezels around it. So you can simply flip the phone around to its back to take your selfie with the main camera.
The most impressive thing about the Nubia X’s second display is the way it totally disappears when switched off. You can see a good demonstration of how that...

Last year’s iPhones get controversial processor throttling feature after all
With iOS 12.1, Apple has brought its controversial “performance management feature” (aka, throttling) to the iPhone 8, 8 Plus, and iPhone X. This functionality dynamically throttles the phone’s processor as its battery degrades over time to stop the handset from randomly shutting down — it can be turned off if desired. Previously Apple has told US senators that “hardware updates” meant that the feature isn’t as necessary on its newest phones.
The company has always maintained that all of its products include “fundamental performance management” functionality to protect its components. A support page explaining the feature said the following about the iPhone 8 and later devices:
iPhone 8 and later use a more advanced hardware and...

Hate speech is finding a home on Instagram
The aftermath of a national emergency follows a now-familiar pattern. Various bad actors race to fill social platforms with misinformation and outright hate speech. Reporters perform simple searches for conspiracy theories and offensive keywords, and write up stories documenting what they find. Platforms belatedly issue contrite statements, saying there is no place for this kind of thing on their platforms, all evidence to the contrary.
Lather, rinse, retweet.
In the wake of last week’s domestic terror attacks, though, a new vector for bile has emerged. More than ever before, journalists are finding vast swaths of hate speech on Instagram. Yesterday, I mentioned this story from the New York Times that found nearly 12,000 posts with the...

Mysterio’s Fishbowl Helmet Confirmed For Spider-Man: Far From Home
A few weeks ago, we finally got our first look at Mysterio in the upcoming Spider-Man: Far From Home, as Jake Gyllenhaal (or maybe it was his stunt double) was spotted on the set of the sequel in costume as Quentin Beck, the master illusionist who’s one of Spidey’s most persistent foes in the comics. The costume he was in looked surprisingly faithful to the villain’s usual appearance, too, except for one thing. He was missing the iconic fishbowl helmet.
Obviously, fans will be crushed if the admittedly silly-looking helmet doesn’t show up in the film, so we imagine the costume designers have found a way for it to work in the more grounded world of the MCU. And while we still don’t know how they’ll do that, we can at least confirm today that yes, the helmet will be making an appearance.
MCU Cosmic has spotted some Dr. Pepper cans which you can see below, and though they don’t reveal the character’s full suit, they do show off a very familiar looking silhouette. Sure, it’s not the final design, but there’s enough there to confirm that Mysterio will be donning the fishbowl when we see him in Far From Home.
For those unfamiliar with the character, Mysterio’s a gifted, and very under-appreciated special effects guru who wants to become a bona fide supervillain. In the source material, he dreams up all sorts of illusions and tricks to counter Spidey’s abilities and we can’t wait to see the two of them square off against each other in the upcoming sequel.
But it won’t only be Mysterio that Spider-Man has to contend with, as there’ve been rumors going around that he won’t be the only major villain in the film, with Molten Man, Hydro-Man, and the Chameleon also being mentioned as possibilities. Throw in some appearances from Nick Fury and Maria Hill and it seems like Mr. Parker may have more complications to deal with than ever on his trip through Europe in Spider-Man: Far From Home, though he’ll evidently still have some time on his hands to hang out with friends and, of course, strike up a romance with MJ.

The Meg Producer Confirms A Sequel’s On The Way
The Meg may have received a mixed response from the critics, but it seems that the simplicity of its central premise (that is, big shark tries to eat people) struck a cord with a lot of filmgoers, as the feature fared pretty respectively at the box office. In fact, with a worldwide gross of $527.8 million, the monster movie is the most successful US-Chinese co-production to date, making it only natural that The Meg 2 is in the works.
Executive producer Catherine Xujun Ying confirmed as such at the U.S.-China Entertainment Summit in Los Angeles, telling Variety that the follow-up is “still in the very early stages, but we’re working on it. We’re trying to keep it secret at this time.”
While the project has yet to get the green light from Warner Bros., this is still encouraging news for anyone who could get on board with the silly thrills of Jon Turteltaub’s picture. At this point, however, we wouldn’t count on the same director making a return to the property, with the National Treasure helmsman saying earlier this year that he was “so disappointed the film wasn’t more bloody or disgusting.”
Indeed, this first installment was cut down to a PG-13 for the sake of getting kids in cinema seats, with the R-rated version failing to even make it onto the movie’s subsequent home video release. While star Jason Statham has previously acknowledged the franchise potential of the series, he too criticized the flick for its lack of gore, explaining a couple of months ago how the film left him asking, “Where’s the fucking blood?”
But while The Meg may have not brought as much bite as some viewers would’ve wanted, it looks like this shark isn’t done terrorizing the ocean quite yet.
