Signal announces new face-blurring tool for Android and iOS

Signal’s new blur tool will automatically locate and blur faces. | Image: Signal

Encrypted messaging app Signal has announced a new face-blurring tool that will be incorporated into the latest Android and iOS versions of the software.

Users sharing pictures through the app will be able to quickly blur faces, adding another layer of privacy to pictures, though not necessarily hiding the subject’s identity completely.

In a blog post announcing the update, Signal co-founder Moxie Marlinspike linked the update to the worldwide protests against racism and police violence sparked by the killing of George Floyd by law enforcement. These protests have led to record downloads for Signal, which uses end-to-end encryption to make messages harder to intercept.

“We’ve also been working to figure out additional ways we can...

Google now highlights search results directly on webpages

Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge

Google is trying to make it easier to find the information you’re looking for on external websites by highlighting relevant sections in yellow, SearchEngineLand reports. The functionality works with Google’s Featured Snippets — the standalone boxes that appear at the top of search results that attempt to give you answers without having to visit a website beyond Google.

Clicking the snippet still takes you to the webpage that it pulled the information from, but now the text from the snippet will be highlighted in yellow, and the browser will automatically scroll down to the section in question. You can see how it looks in practice in the screenshots below.

Namco ports Pac-Man CE for the Xbox 360 to the NES for the Switch

Namco has a new range of Famicom (NES) games coming out for the Nintendo Switch this month, and it includes an unexpected bonus: a NES demake of Pac-Man Championship Edition, the incredibly good reimagining of Pac-Man released for the Xbox 360 in 2007.

Pac-Man CE transformed Pac-Man from a plodding stage-based game into a fast-paced time attack where every round lasts five minutes and you’re racing to get the highest score possible. It was designed for widescreen TVs and featured pulsating neon HD graphics, but it would have been perfectly playable on older hardware — its advancement was entirely in smart game design. An NES version, then, should work out pretty well.

Bane Reportedly Being Saved For One Of The Batman Sequels

We don’t know much about The Batman in terms of its storyline yet, but one thing we do know is that it will be stacked with some of the Dark Knight’s most iconic enemies. Namely, Riddler (Paul Dano), Penguin (Colin Farrell) and Catwoman (Zoe Kravitz). Therefore, we can likely expect a bunch more of Gotham’s worst citizens in the next two installments in the planned trilogy starring Robert Pattinson. And it looks like Bane could be one of them.

Heroic Hollywood has revealed some news fed to them from an insider source at DC. Intriguingly, HH explains in their latest video (seen via the link below) that a Bane solo film was something discussed following the success of Todd Phillips’ Joker (which We Got This Covered told you months ago). However, it seems that project has now been vetoed by Warner Bros. execs and the reason why is because Bane is being saved up for potential use in one of the future Matt Reeves Batman flicks.

For one, you can see why the idea of a Bane movie floated around after Joker, as the Man Who Broke The Bat’s Back is a character you can easily imagine getting a gritty reimagining. As HH points out, too, there’s already a full, tragic origin for him in the comics – the Vengeance of Bane storyline – that would’ve formed the basis of the film. However, that seems to be off the table completely due to Reeves’ interest in the Venom-fueled villain.

Once again, it’s hard to tell what WB’s rules are for which characters can be shared and which can’t, as it’s known that another Joker could show up in the Reevesverse down the line. In any case, while a Bane film might’ve been fun, the idea of Pattinson facing off against him is an exciting one, too. Of course, we already saw a Batman/Bane showdown in 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises, so another Knightfall adaptation is probably off the cards, but there’s still much more that can be done with the brawny brute.

Here’s How Tenet’s John David Washington Could Look As DCEU’s Green Lantern

The second trailer for Christopher Nolan’s Tenet arrived online recently, giving us a better look at John David Washington as the movie’s super-cool protagonist – called Protagonist – who’s able to manipulate time. Also in the film is soon-to-be-Batman Robert Pattinson. Given Nolan’s own connections to the DC universe though and the superhero-like nature of his role, it doesn’t seem like much of a jump to imagine Washington joining the DCEU at some point. Maybe as… Green Lantern?

Digital artist Boss Logic has created a piece, based off an image of the actor in Tenet, imagining Washington in character as one of the Emerald Knights, likely John Stewart. You have to admit that he looks great in the classic Lantern get-up, even just in fan art form.

See for yourself below:

Warner Bros. has long-intended to reboot the Lanterns within the DCEU, following 2011’s flopped movie starring Ryan Reynolds. Green Lantern Corps is still in some stage of development at WB, with Tom Cruise once courted to star as Hal Jordan. Stewart, meanwhile, would serve as the co-lead of the film. Various stars have been touted by fans as strong picks for the character and now it seems they’ve entered Washington into the race.

It’s worth noting that we learned last year that he was actually in discussions to join Matt Reeves’ The Batman in a key role. Plans changed, however, and his character was removed from the storyline. So, maybe Reeves will hire him for a Batman sequel, or perhaps it would be best if he ended up becoming a Lantern instead?

In any case, while we wait for the movie to sort itself out, a big budget Green Lantern TV series is coming to HBO Max in the near future.

Godzilla Vs. Kong’s Official Rating Has Been Revealed

Godzilla vs. Kong will see two of cinema’s most famous monsters go head to head in a Hollywood blockbuster for the first time. A release could still be some way off, however, for though the film currently holds a November 2020 slot, it’s uncertain what impact COVID-19 will have on its schedule. But big news has already been revealed with regard to the audience it’ll be aiming at.

The Motion Picture Association have confirmed that the pic will have a PG-13 rating, which they’ve given it due to “intense sequences of creature violence/destruction and brief language.” No real surprises, then. I’m sure there were diehards baying for an adult certificate (there always are), but realistically, this was always going to be where the filmmakers were aiming. After all, it’s safe enough for pre-teens and just about rough enough for adults.

All that being said, the title Godzilla vs. Kong brings back some worrying memories of Batman V Superman. There’s the fear that the premise has been designed solely for corporate cross-promotion, as opposed to having any story of value to tell. Not to mention that the MonsterVerse movies that Legendary Pictures have produced up to now have been fairly uninspiring. Still, just as the idea of seeing DC’s two greatest heroes on screen together had its fangasmic pull, so does the thought of seeing Godzilla and King Kong beat the living daylights out of each other. Also, Zack Snyder has nothing to do with this movie, thankfully.

Tell us, though, what are your thoughts on Godzilla vs. Kong’s PG-13 rating? Are you disappointed by it? Completely unsurprised like me? Thrilled for the “intense sequences of creature violence”? That one I’m very much down for. Whatever your thoughts are, drop them in the comments section below.

Nintendo’s Donkey Kong statue was not actually stolen from its New York store

Photo by Megan Farokhmanesh / The Verge

Fear not: a large Donkey Kong statue at Nintendo’s New York City store has not gone missing after the building was broken into on Monday evening.

A now-viral tweet claimed looters removed a life-sized model of the fictional gorilla during demonstrations in Manhattan earlier this week. The tweet featured real images of the Nintendo retail location with police standing outside and broken storefront windows. But it also contained an image, suspected to be Photoshopped, of the Donkey Kong statue missing.

Now, Nintendo has set the record straight. “There was no theft of a Donkey Kong statue from Nintendo NY store,” a Nintendo of America spokesperson confirmed to The Verge.
