Huawei sues Verizon for alleged patent violations

huawei Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge

Huawei has announced that it’s suing Verizon for alleged patent violations, marking the latest twist in the Chinese tech giant’s adversarial relationship with the US. The lawsuit, filed in the Eastern and Western district courts in Texas, claims that Verizon is using 12 patents owned by Huawei without authorization.

The patents relate to network technology, with titles like “Sending Method, Receiving and Processing Method and Apparatus for Adapting Payload Bandwidth for Data Transmission.” None of them involve 5G, but a person familiar with the matter who requested anonymity describes them as crucial to network functionality. Huawei is the world’s biggest maker of telecoms equipment and often makes a point of highlighting its R&D...

Nintendo says the coronavirus is delaying Switch production

Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge

Nintendo has informed consumers in its home market of Japan that production and shipments of the Switch console and accessories will experience delays due to the effect of the new coronavirus. The Animal Crossing-themed variant of the Switch, which was only announced last week, has had its preorder availability pushed back from Saturday to an unspecified date. The company apologizes for the trouble and says it’ll keep on monitoring the situation.

It’s not clear whether the delays will affect shipments elsewhere. Nintendo specifically references hardware produced in China and sold in Japan, but last year the company started diversifying its supply chain and building some units in Vietnam to avoid US tariffs. Most Switch consoles are said...

Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness Loses Rachel McAdams

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness just lost another key figure from the original film. A few weeks ago, director Scott Derrickson left the project citing creative differences and now, we’ve learned that Rachel McAdams will not be returning for the sequel.

McAdams played Dr. Christine Palmer in the first place, a former flame of Stephen Strange who was one of the only people to support Strange following his debilitating car accident. Well, now that support system is gone, as Variety reports that she won’t be in the sequel. We Got This Covered can confirm that the was in the initial draft of the script, but we’re told she left around the same time Derrickson did as she didn’t want to make the film without him.

This isn’t the first time Marvel has abandoned a possible love interest for one of their superheroes, of course. Natalie Portman’s character from the first two Thor movies was seemingly retconned from the franchise and while she was briefly mentioned in various MCU movies afterwards, Marvel clearly has no room for her. That was, until Taika Waititi announced that she wasn’t only returning to the Thor franchise, but that she’ll be playing the female Thor in Love and Thunder.

So, all that being said, it’s probably safe to say that there’s a chance McAdams might eventually return to the MCU someday. She’s got enough star power to warrant a role in a future pic, after all. But sticking with who is in the film, and we know that Benedict Cumberbatch, B.D. Wong and Chiwetel Ejiofor will all be back.

New additions to the cast, meanwhile, include Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch. Reports indicate that the upcoming Disney Plus show, WandaVision, will play a key role in setting up Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness as well, so expect the two to be closely connected.

We’ll find out just how much they tie into one another though when Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness hits theaters on May 7th, 2021.

Spider-Man’s Sam Raimi In Talks To Helm Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness

The exit of Scott Derrickson from Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness came as a pretty big surprise to the industry and fans alike. After all, the filmmaker received a lot of praise for his work on the first movie and it looked as if he was all set to replicate that success in the seemingly ambitious sequel. The old chestnut of “creative differences” was used to explain the split, with insiders revealing that while Kevin Feige was alright with including horror elements, Derrickson wanted the film to be a full-on horror movie. Feige wasn’t on board with that though and so, Derrickson walked (or was fired, depending on who you believe).

Now, however, Variety is reporting that Marvel Studios are busy searching for a replacement director for the sequel and they’ve currently got their sights set on none other than Spider-Man director Sam Raimi, who helmed the original web-slinger trilogy back in the early 2000s. Not to mention he’s also very well known for his contributions to the horror genre thanks to The Evil Dead property. In other words, he’s the perfect choice to take charge of a film like Doctor Strange 2.

Plot-wise, not much is known about Multiverse of the Madness at the moment, but it’s been confirmed that it’ll follow on directly from the events of WandaVision, while its use of multiple alternate realities might just make it the most important movie and/or TV show in the MCU’s Phase Four. And though it doesn’t sound like Raimi has signed on the dotted line just yet, we imagine Marvel will make this official sooner rather than later, as the pic is set to go into production in a few months’ time.

While Derrickson’s departure is certainly a loss, Raimi is an excellent and exciting replacement to get behind the camera on Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness and hopefully, he’ll be able to deliver a film that truly pushes the boundaries of the MCU. Watch this space for more.

Watch: Keanu Reeves Returns As Neo In The Matrix 4 Set Video

With his status as the internet’s favorite actor firmly secured after a standout 2019 that saw him feature in John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, Toy Story 4, Between Two Ferns: The Movie and Always Be My Maybe, as well as his continued reputation as one of Hollywood’s all-round good guys, the recent resurgence of Keanu Reeves looks set to continue well into 2020 and beyond.

In fact, May 21st of next year has already been declared by fans as ‘Keanu Reeves Day’, namely due to the fact that both John Wick: Chapter 4 and the long-awaited fourth installment of The Matrix franchise are set to hit theaters on the same day. While we can gather that the next Wick adventure will continue expanding the series’ unique mythology and expertly-choreographed action sequences, The Matrix 4 still remains a complete mystery at this point.

The movie comes 18 years after the original trilogy concluded in fairly disappointing fashion, considering the first film was one of the most groundbreaking and influential blockbusters ever made, and also marks the first time that one of the Wachowski siblings has written or directed a feature on their own, with Lana the only one behind the camera here.

Quite how the story will revisit the world remains to be seen, especially considering that the three-movie arc seemed to reach a definitive conclusion at the end of Revolutions back in 2003, but the first set videos from The Matrix 4 have been revealed today, which you can check out below.

Obviously, there isn’t a lot we can gather from the footage here, but it seems interesting that Neo’s outfit and overall look is a lot more casual than we’re used to seeing, given the franchise’s established black leather and sunglasses aesthetic. How the legacy characters convincingly manage to return given previous events could potentially make or break The Matrix 4‘s chances of success though, and the project still has a long way to go to convince audiences that it isn’t just the latest in a long line of long-dormant franchises to be brought back in order to cash in on name recognition in order to make a quick buck.

Apple now sells more watches than the entire Swiss watch industry

Photo by Vjeran Pavic / The Verge

The Apple Watch wasn’t just the best-selling smartwatch last year, but also put the Swiss watch industry to shame, according to new sales estimates compiled by Strategy Analytics. The report estimates Apple shipped nearly 31 million units in 2019, a 36 percent jump over last year. The Swiss watch industry, which includes brands like Swatch and TAG Heuer, only shipped an estimated 21.1 million units, a 13 percent decline, Strategy Analytics says.

While Apple doesn’t break out specific Apple Watch unit sales in its quarterly earnings, Strategy Analytics gathers data from retail partners and other vendors to arrive at its sales estimates. “Analog wristwatches remain popular among older consumers, but younger buyers are tipping toward...

Elijah Wood Wants To Bring Back Robert Englund For Nightmare On Elm Street Reboot

The potential of a second reboot of A Nightmare On Elm Street inches ever closer to becoming a reality, and Elijah Wood has stated his desire to bring back Robert Englund as Freddy Krueger.

The franchise has had no new installments since the abysmal reboot just shy of a decade past, the less about which is said the better, where Freddy was instead played by Jackie Earle Haley. However, now that the rights for the series have returned to Wes Craven’s estate and who subsequently opened pitches for a continuation, anyone could throw their hat in the ring, with it being recently announced that Wood and his producing partner Daniel Noah are interested in pursuing the property. Nothing official has been announced, or been suggested that it will even go ahead, but Wood is adamant about the importance of Englund being a part of any potential new movie.

“You have to bring Robert Englund back for one more film. I think, especially if you’re going to open up a new franchise and take it in different directions, you have to establish it with him and then you can move on. I don’t think it’s interesting to tell the same story over and over again, we don’t need another origin story of Freddy Krueger, I don’t think it should even really be so much about Freddy.”

Wood then went on to speak about New Nightmare and its importance to the direction that the perception of slasher movies took in the late ‘90s.

Scream owes a real debt to New Nightmare. That was the first time the notion of referencing horror movies in another horror movie was possible, it had never really been done before.”

The limited use of Freddy harks back to the original film, which was largely focused on Nancy and her friends first trying to figure out what was going on and then survive it, with the dream demon’s actual screen time being severely limited, especially in comparison to the dominating force he later became. As for New Nightmare, in addition to introducing the idea of meta narratives, it also served to revert Freddy to the sinister stalker of dreams he was in the series’ original installments before his popularity and cultural saturation ended up turning him into a wisecracking joke, so using it as a reference point is a pretty good place to start.

As previously mentioned, there’s nothing yet set in stone, but it certainly seems that Wood has a solid understanding of the Nightmare On Elm Street films and what would make a good version of them, so if another remake is ultimately on the cards, the powers that be could certainly do a lot worse then giving him a crack at producing one.
