Netflix Users Are Loving Channing Tatum’s New Movie

Phil Lord and Christopher Miller have already produced one Netflix animated movie this year, with The Mitchells vs. the Machines drawing widespread critical acclaim and dominating the most-watched list for weeks, and the duo are back just over two months later to bring audiences America: The Motion Picture, just in time for the Fourth of July weekend.

Obviously, it couldn’t be more different from The Mitchells vs. the Machines in almost every imaginable way. While the former is a family film that’s already a front runner for next year’s Best Animated Feature Academy Award, the latter is a gleefully inaccurate dramatization of how Channing Tatum‘s George Washington rose up against the English in anachronistic, foul-mouthed and incredibly bloody fashion.

If you take The Patriot, Archer, The Expendables, The Avengers, Team America and Star Wars, throw it into a blender and then dump it all over a team of talented comedians, then you’ve pretty much got what Netflix are offering. Naturally, the critical reactions have been more than a little mixed, but as you can see from the responses below, a lot of subscribers can’t get enough of America: The Motion Picture.

It’s going to take some effort to dislodge America: The Motion Picture as the wildest animated effort of 2021, and it could be the ideal viewing for the big national holiday once enough beers have been consumed and the danger of slipping into a food-related coma is a serious possibility. A Rotten Tomatoes score of 36% isn’t great, but it’s already managed to find a spot on the platform’s most-watched list after only premiering on Wednesday, so there’s evidently a huge number of people willing to check it out.

The Internet Is Loving Chris Pratt’s New Sci-Fi Movie

Chris Pratt‘s The Tomorrow War hit Amazon Prime Video today and is currently lighting up social media. Pratt plays Dan Forester, a biology teacher and Iraq War special forces veteran who gets sucked into a bizarre time-travel adventure. The conceit is that in the year 2051 Earth is being invaded by aliens, with humanity now on the brink of extinction.

With the worlds’ militaries having already been defeated, the last desperate hope is to draft soldiers from the past and bring them to the future. Forester is one of them and finds himself navigating a doomed future he doesn’t quite understand against desperate odds. It sounds like a fun ride, particularly as the supporting cast includes always-great J.K. Simmons as an anti-government Vietnam vet.

Here’s how it’s going down on Twitter:

This reception will come as a relief to Amazon, as professional critics haven’t been singing its praises. The Tomorrow War is sitting at 56% on the Tomatometer, with critics saying the concept is great, but the execution is lacking. Some of the more positive ones say that it’s “gloriously moronic,” but many of them wish that it’d slow down to explore the setting more thoroughly.

It’s also worth remembering that this is one of many films that have faced substantial delays due to COVID. The original theatrical release date was set to be Christmas Day 2020, but was then moved to July 23, 2021. But things still aren’t great for movie theaters and Amazon stepped in to offer $200 million to buy the movie for Amazon Prime Video.

Whether their investment will pay off remains to be seen, but judging from the positivity online The Tomorrow War seems to have found its audience.

Charlize Theron Says The Old Guard 2 Script Is Complete, Shoots Early Next Year

As a big budget comic book adaptation with a proven action hero in the lead role that ended on a note specifically designed to set up the next adventure for the titular crew, it was always incredibly likely that The Old Guard was poised to launch a multi-film franchise for Netflix, especially when it drew in over 70 million viewers in the first four weeks it was available to stream, becoming one of the platform’s ten most-watched original movies ever in the process.

Star and producer Charlize Theron has always been open in admitting that she’s game to return as immortal warrior Andy for another go-round, and the actress has now confirmed that the script for The Old Guard 2 has been written, and production is being eyed to kick off during the first quarter of next year, presumably resulting in a summer 2023 release.

The Academy Award winner also confirms that Marwan Kenzari and Luca Marinelli will be be back as Joe and Nicky, better known as Yusuf Al-Kaysani and Nicolò di Genova, but there’s no word on the rest of the ensemble. However, director Gina Prince-Blythewood will have surely already gotten the call, and based on how The Old Guard ended, we have a decent idea of where the plot is heading.

The opener ended on the cliffhanger that Andy’s old companion Quynh wasn’t trapped in an iron maiden at the bottom of the ocean, but alive and well. She’s also got a serious axe to grind having been left for dead centuries ago, and she shows up at the home of exiled team member Booker before The Old Guard cut to black, so at least the sequel-baiting finale wasn’t for nothing in the long run.
