WB Might Recast Hermione For New Harry Potter Film If Emma Watson Won’t Return

This week, WarnerMedia CEO Jason Kilar confirmed that the studio is looking to expand the Harry Potter franchise, which has reignited rumors of what’s next for the Wizarding World. For one, a spinoff movie starring Hermione Granger could be in the works. The intellectually gifted witch has always been a fan favorite, so you can see why WB would want to base their first female-led HP project around her. But there might be one big obstacle to overcome before it gets made.

As fans are no doubt aware, stories of Emma Watson having quit – or at least temporarily retired from – acting have spread like wildfire online recently. So, it’s strange to hear so soon after that a Hermione film is in development. But Giant Freakin Robot, who broke this intriguing news, claims that Warner Bros. has a plan in place in case Watson elects not to return, as the outlet writes that the studio is considering recasting the character if they can’t get her back.

Obviously, given Watson’s popularity, their first choice is to convince her to sign up for the spinoff, but this is apparently proving difficult as she’s pretty ambivalent about reprising her role. GFR claims that WB is hoping that if they throw enough money at the problem they might be able to come to a deal, but if Watson is adamant that she doesn’t want to return to Hogwarts, then they’ll have no choice but to look for a new Hermione.

What this means is that the project could break away from established continuity – or maybe it won’t, seeing as Dumbledore’s been portrayed by three different actors so far and we’re not supposed to notice. It’s possible this spinoff concept could come to nothing, as the studio is no doubt throwing various concepts at the wall and seeing what sticks, but if it does happen, it’ll either be a big treat for fans or something hugely controversial.

Tell us, though, would you accept anyone other than Emma Watson as Hermione in a Harry Potter spinoff film? You know where to leave your thoughts.

A Great Idris Elba Movie Hits Netflix This Month

We’re pretty big fans of Idris Elba and one of his most critically acclaimed films, 2013’s Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, is coming to Netflix later this March – more specifically, on the 29th of the month. Why, then, is the Justin Chadwick-directed biopic worth checking out when it hits the streamer?

Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom tells the story of Nelson Mandela, including his 27 years in prison as the result of his opposition to the then-apartheid government of South Africa, and subsequent rise to become President of the country. Elba plays Mandela as an older adult, with Siza Pini and Atandwa Kani also taking on the part for his early life. Naomie Harris co-stars as Winnie Mandela.

Although there were critics of the film’s perhaps overly-respectful and middle-of-the-road approach to Mandela’s life, most viewers appreciated Elba’s charismatic performance, for which he received a Golden Globe nomination. Long Walk to Freedom‘s screenwriter William Nicholson later pointed to the parallel success of Steve McQueen’s 12 Years a Slave for potentially taking away what would have been a significant audience for the picture.

Idris Elba‘s star turn came as part of a run of major studio and franchise appearances, including in ThorPrometheus, and Pacific Rim, to name a few. Since then, the English actor has been consistently busy, lending his presence to everything from Cats to the upcoming The Suicide Squad.

We may also be getting a long-awaited movie adaptation of BBC series Luther, which remains one of the the 48-year-old’s most iconic character portrayals. For anyone, then, who’s yet to check out Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, it’s a solid drama that perhaps didn’t get as much attention as it deserved on its initial release.

The Best Horror Movies On Netflix According To Critics

Horror, the greatest of all film genres, can sometimes be a little daunting to find your next pick in, especially when browsing through the vast library of them available on Netflix. This is where critics come in, and here are the highest rated offerings as reviewed by people who watch hundreds of new movies each year.

In His House, a couple fleeing the civil war in South Sudan are granted shabby government housing in an anonymous London suburb, with strict guidelines to retain their asylum status. They’re soon plagued by a presence that demands they repay an unspecified debt, though, with the torment threatening the new lives they’re trying to build as well as resurrecting the horrors of the nation they fled.

Although Gerald’s Game seems one of the most unfilmable of Stephen King’s books, this ranks among the best of the decidedly hit-and-miss adaptations of his work. Disaster strikes Jessie and Gerald, a couple trying to rekindle their marriage with a dirty weekend in an isolated cabin, when Gerald dies from a heart attack during a sex game, leaving Jessie handcuffed to the bed unable to free herself or call for help, hallucinating and slowly dying of dehydration while the key to her survival lies in repressed memories that she doesn’t want to revisit.

#Alive is one of the multiple quality zombie productions that South Korea has been producing for years, seeing a young man hole himself up in his apartment when the zombie apocalypse breaks out on the streets of Seoul. Tense and fast-paced, the character focus and exploration of the need for human connection compels the viewer as much as the zombie action.

Also in the Top 5 best reviewed movies are It Comes At Night, where a family who survived a global pandemic by living in a woodland cabin find their fragile safety shattered with the arrival of a stranger, and The Invitation, seeing a man attend a dinner party hosted by his ex-wife and her new husband, where past trauma and ulterior movies soon result in deteriorating sanity.

Mortal Kombat Director Explains Why The Franchise Is So Iconic

Mortal Kombat has been around for nearly three decades and its combination of ninjas, kung fu, magic and extreme violence has ensured it a place in the hearts of fans across the world. But over the last few years, the franchise has been on a serious hot streak. 2015’s Mortal Kombat X and 2019’s Mortal Kombat 11 are both incredible fighting video games, and the hotly anticipated movie looks to be taking inspiration from their excellent story modes.

But what is it about Mortal Kombat that gives it such longevity while similar titles wither on the vine? In a recent interview, Simon McQuoid, director of the upcoming film, absolutely nailed why fans love it, saying:

“Really Mortal Kombat for me is wildly popular because of the characters. And the characters are ultimately the sort of the engine of this timeline. I mean, there’s the canon, there’s all the backstory, all the detail. Every character has had enormous sort of layers of backstory added to them but really when I [talk] about this sort of respect for the fans, it’s also the respect of the characters and how they get presented and brought and celebrated to the fans and also to the new audience. Because they’re really fantastic characters and I wanted to pay them the respect to bring them to a place that feels like we give a shit. And they are elevated and we can sort of get really excited by Sub-Zero. Joe Taslim manifesting Sub-Zero is a pretty exciting thing to see when he’s doing it.”

He’s hit the nail on the head here. Developer NetherRealm Studios not only manage to respect and create classic characters like Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Kano and Liu Kang, but they also have an impressive skill at keeping this universe feeling fresh. One smart decision was moving the timeline on to introduce a new generation of ‘legacy’ characters, the best of which is the hugely entertaining Cassie Cage (daughter of Johnny and Sonya).

They’re also very skilled in creating entirely new fighters. It didn’t take long for me to fall for the bizarre insectoid charms of wasp-lady D’Vorah in Mortal Kombat X or time manipulator Geras in Mortal Kombat 11.

Nobody is going to argue that the MK fighters are incredibly deep dramatic personae, but you couldn’t ask for a better lineup for a violent, grindhouse action game. Judging by the trailer, McQuoid has grasped exactly what makes the property so popular and is seamlessly transplanting the cheesy interdimensional fun and gross but creative fatalities to the big screen for the upcoming Mortal Kombat reboot.
