Horror fans question if Laurie Strode really is the genre’s finest final girl

Amongst an overabundance of traditional tropes and clichés found in the horror genre, one of the most debated is the notion of a “final girl”. The Halloween franchise boasts Jamie Lee Curtis’ Laurie Strode, who most consider to be the undisputed queen of horror survivors. But now there are challengers to her crown, as others argue another candidate is superior.
Over on Reddit, horror fanatics came rushing to the defense of their favorite final girl in a thought-provoking thread on the platform. Initially, user u/PLake550 kickstarted the conversation by arguing that Nancy Thompson from A Nightmare on Elm Street was a “better final girl” than Halloween’s Laurie Strode.

A star-studded thriller that tried and failed to be all things at once dishes out tough justice on Netflix

Biting off more than you can chew might have descended into cliche a long time ago, but there’s a reason why; it’s a phrase that applies to every single aspect of our existence. Extending to cinema, there’s been a large number of movies attempting to stuff a handful of genres into a single story to try and be all things to all people, but the reception to 2006’s Freedomland reiterates why the results are often lacking.
Director Joe Roth tries to incorporate strands of mystery thriller, police procedural, intimate drama, social parable, media intrusion, and an examination of racial tensions all at once, only for a 23 percent Rotten Tomatoes score and 25 percent user rating to put an exclamation point on how badly it missed the mark on all fronts. In fact, the aggregation site even describes Freedomland as “poorly directed and overacted” in its summary. Ouch.

Just like clockwork, the tide of opinion begins to turn against ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’

As one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s best-reviewed projects ever that currently holds respective Rotten Tomatoes scores of 93 and 98 percent from critics and fans, along with its status as the sixth highest-grossing movie of all-time by way of a $1.9 billion box office haul, Spider-Man: No Way Home is about as universally-beloved as it gets, right?
After all, the web-slinging epic united three generations of storytelling to bring back Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, Willem Dafoe, Jamie Fox, Alfred Molina, and many more besides to deliver wish-fulfillment on a previously unimaginable scale, even by the fantastical standards of the superhero genre.
