Samsung’s earnings were likely hit by Huawei but boosted by Apple

Samsung Electronics expects its second-quarter operating profit to have more than halved from a year previously, falling about 56 percent to 6.5 trillion won ($5.56 billion), according to earnings guidance released by the company today. Revenue is projected to slide about 4 percent to 56 trillion won ($47.89 billion).
This would be Samsung’s lowest profit since Q3 2016, when the company was hit by the Galaxy Note 7 debacle. Samsung doesn’t provide full explanations along with its earnings guidance, but analysts suggest the Huawei crackdown could have had a significant impact on Samsung’s critical chip business. On the other hand, it’s also likely to help Samsung’s smartphone sales in certain markets.

Samuel L. Jackson Recalls Fanboying When He Got Star Wars Gig
Household name Samuel L. Jackson has some pretty great memories of Star Wars.
In a recent interview with 60 Minutes, the actor spoke warmly of when he first saw A New Hope (the first installment of the Original Trilogy) and made clear how fascinated he was by its abundance of intriguing features.
Speaking on the “intergalactic bar” from the movie, for example, Jackson expressed amazement when recalling how the scene contained “people hanging out, big things, little things, furry things, one-eyed things, five-eyed things.” He knew almost immediately that he wanted to eventually play a role in a Star Wars film.
Some years later he was contacted by Lucasfilm and wound up meeting with George Lucas. The director inquired as to what part the actor wanted to play in the legendary franchise. Ecstatic at the very proposition of being a part of these iconic movies he loved, Jackson replied, “I don’t care, man, I could be a storm trooper,” joking that he simply wanted to, “just run across screen and say I was in Star Wars.”

Lucas had bigger plans, however, and Jackson found out just what they were when he walked into a dressing room in London only to discover from the garments around him that he would be playing the part of a Jedi. “I was like, oh my god, this is crazy!” the legendary actor recalled.
Elsewhere in the interview, he looked back on his role as Mace Windu fondly and even spoke about choosing the iconic purple lightsaber in an effort to define himself and his character in the series. Of course, as fans will know, the actor was featured in three installments of the galactic saga until he eventually met his demise in Revenge of the Sith. Nevertheless, Samuel L. Jackson’s fanboy love of Star Wars still shows.

Bloody New Trailer Debuts For Remake Of David Cronenberg’s Rabid
One of the more gloriously gruesome examples of David Cronenberg’s early work, 1977’s Rabid focuses on a woman whose mutation leads to a pandemic across Canada. Jen and Sylvia Soska are now remaking the film for 2019, and we’ve just seen a trailer for the body horror-themed movie. From what we can tell, the Soskas have nailed the gruesome effects and dread of the original.
The remake explores the life of Rose, an introvert whose dreams of becoming a fashion designer are ruined by an accident. A radical stem cell treatment restores her health and grants her beauty, but Rose soon finds that the experiment had unintended consequences. Laura Vandervoort plays the aforementioned woman, with wrestler CM Punk in a supporting role.
The trailer opens with a creepy-looking medical facility and scenes of Rose being bullied at a fashion show. We also see glimpses of Rose’s motorcycle accident, her subsequent disfigurement, and the beginning of the treatment that will transform her into the carrier of a deadly strain of rabies. Along the way we catch glimpses of some more homages to Cronenberg, too, most notably surgeons that look a lot like the twins in Dead Ringers.

The Soska Sisters have an impressive reputation for horror, having turned out low-budget fare such as Dead Hooker in a Trunk, See No Evil 2, American Mary and ABCs of Death 2. We’re definitely fans of their work, and the sisters are certainly not backing down from the bloodier end of the horror genre with Rabid. Based on the original Cronenberg story and the Soskas’ filmography, it also seems that there will be strong feminist themes to their new movie.
Rabid will premiere at this year’s FrightFest in the UK over the weekend of August 26th. We should then hopefully see it get a limited theatrical release and online distribution via A71 Entertainment and genre specialists Shout! Studios. For now though, the trailer’s enough to whet, or rather dampen, our appetites for this new take on Cronenberg’s classic movie.

New Star Wars Animated Short May Reveal Rey’s Past
With less than six months to go until the release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, we’re getting a lot of hints about some of the movie’s most closely guarded secrets. Some of the more substantial buzz in the last few weeks has been about Rey’s parents and connection to the history of the franchise. Now, some fans are spotting clues in a Star Wars Kids video, which in distilling the Skywalker saga, might contain some deeper meaning.
Titled Jedi vs. Sith: The Skywalker Saga, the short video gives us a quick history lesson on the Skywalker family, beginning with the events around Anakin in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. We then jump ahead, via some nifty animated transitions, to teen and then shaggy-haired Anakin in Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones and Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, and his turn to the Dark Side of the Force.
The rest of the video deals with the events of the Original Trilogy, including the rise of Luke Skywalker and the eventual defeat of Emperor Palpatine. From there we see an older Luke and the training of Rey in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which sets up an intriguing theory: why would Rey be included in a history of the Skywalkers if she wasn’t one herself?
The Rey as a Skywalker theory has been bouncing around for a long time, although the producers of the franchise have been cautious about giving away the character’s backstory. Indeed, it could still turn out that Rey has no ties to the wider Star Wars universe at all.
Personally, we’re not sure where to stand on her involvement in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, as it seems that Daisy Ridley won’t be reprising the character in future sequels. If she is a Skywalker after all, then there could be some continuation, possibly involving Kylo Ren or another, as yet unseen character.
In any case, there’s not too long to wait until we get answers in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, even if the final explanation of Rey’s past might end up being a disappointment. Regardless of its implications, we definitely recommend you check out the Star Wars Kids video, as it provides a great, stylishly animated rundown of key moments in the franchise.
