President Donald Trump has been a long-time climate change denier, suggesting that the concept was “created by and for the Chinese in order to make US manufacturing non-competitive.” But, in an interview with CBS’ 60 Minutes last night he backed away slightly from these claims, saying he no longer believes the warming of the planet is a hoax.
“I’m not denying climate change,” Trump told interviewer Lesley Stahl.
At the same time, though, Trump suggested that climate change might not be caused by humans; that he did not want to take any action that would harm the American economy; and that the warming of the planet by industrial emissions would reverse of its own accord.

Apple has acquired Asaii, a music analytics company focused around the discovery of new and emerging artists, Axios reports. The acquisition comes as Apple Music’s main competitor Spotify is increasing its support for unsigned artists, who can now upload their music directly to its service. Last month, Asaii announced it would be shutting down on October 14th.
Asaii’s main product is a dashboard that pulls together data from both music services and social media. This dashboard is advertised as having multiple uses, such as helping record labels plan marketing campaigns and live tours. But, its main feature is allowing labels to discover artists before they make it big. Asaii claims that its tech is able to find artists “10 weeks to a...

Google will update the camera app on its Pixel smartphones to work with external microphones when shooting video, an employee from the app’s engineering team has confirmed. Android Police reported on the upcoming feature on Friday.
The Pixel is known for producing terrific still photos, and Google developed impressive stabilization for the video end of things. But the Pixel’s microphones only capture so-so audio. External mics that plug into the USB-C port (or headphone jack in the case of the original Pixel) can solve for this.
Some third-party Android camera apps like Open Camera already allow for external mics to record audio while the Pixel handles video. But having the option in the stock app will be nice for vloggers and other...
As part of Red Bull Music Academy’s 20th edition, the company has built the world’s largest step sequencer, and placed it outside of iconic Berlin club Tresor for anyone to try out.
Called the RBMA-20, the sequencer was designed and built by the Berlin-based creative studio Neulant van Exel, and took 30 technicians five weeks to assemble. Red Bull says it is the largest drum machine ever built and is fully functional. It’s physically massive, at about 33 feet long, 7.2 feet high, and weighs over 1,300 pounds.
Across the interface are 427 knobs and faders, four analog drum machines, a modular synthesizer, and a sampling unit. Red Bull hasn’t said much more about what powers the RBMA-20, but musician Connor Crowe got a peek at what’s under...
In John Scalzi’s space opera novel The Collapsing Empire, he introduced a world where a vast, planetary empire grew throughout the galaxy by way of the Flow, a faster-than-light network that allows for interstellar trade. At the end of that book, the network was beginning to collapse, setting up a perilous situation for the next book in the series, The Consuming Fire, which is out next week.
The book will be out in hardcover and audio, and as is the case with most of Scalzi’s audiobooks, it’ll be narrated by Wil Wheaton. Audible provided us with an excerpt of the audiobook, in which two of the novel’s characters come face to face with a ghostly presence on a starship, one that highlights just how much a language can change over several...
It can be difficult to find time to finish a video game, especially if you only have a few hours a week to play. In our biweekly column Short Play we suggest video games that can be started and finished in a weekend.
One of the best things about video games is being able to experience things from a different person’s point of view. Even better is when you are given the opportunity to play out different scenarios from that person’s perspective. It allows you to not only learn about what the world can be like for another person, but to, in a small way, inhabit and experience it because of the agency that games can provide.
One Night, Hot Springs is a visual novel that does just this by having you experience a very specific moment in the...
I could start this post by trying to write some eloquent thing about how life imitates art, and vice versa, but here’s the truth: what’s happening in 2018 feels increasingly unfathomable, and so I, like many others, have found comfort in drawing parallels to popular culture. Like the #resistance tweeters who tie red string between every new development in the horror show of modern day America and the world of Harry Potter, my new obsession is picking out all the similarities between Elon Musk’s ongoing fight with the SEC and the very good Showtime show Billions.
Spoilers for, let’s say, all three seasons of the very good Showtime show Billions ahead, even though I just started season three.
Billions revolves around two main characters....
In our monthly Rise and Fall column we look back at crowdfunded gadgets that reached their funding goal. Months or year later, how are they doing? If they’ve shipped to backers, are they still supporting the gadget? If they haven’t shipped, why haven’t they met their shipping deadline? We hope this column will give us all a place to understand.
Vue is a pair of smart glasses that launched on Kickstarter in October 2016 with a $50,000 funding goal. It surpassed that goal and ultimately raised more than $2 million from backers. Since then, the company has raised an additional million dollars through preorders.

As with many MCU heroes, Chris Evans has changed his costume as Captain America several times over the past few years. As the character’s gone from World War II to modern day, Steve Rogers has had to adjust his fashion choice to suit the times and the practicalities of whatever his latest mission is. But what’s the character’s best outfit according to the man himself?
Evans was asked this question while attending ACE Comic Con in Chicago this weekend alongside his Marvel co-stars Karen Gillan and Lee Pace. His answer will likely encourage nods from fans, too, as he went for perhaps the most widely popular variant on the Captain America costume from the movies – the one from The Winter Soldier.
“I was really partial to the Winter Soldier Cap suit. I just like that it was kind of that all-navy number. To me, it just…we called it the stealth suit. I don’t know if that’s made it out of what we would say on set, but yeah, the stealth suit to me was just cool, but you know, I’ve loved many suits…maybe not the first Avengers (laughs), maybe not that suit, but the other suits were great.”
Likewise, Evans’ joke that The Avengers suit is definitely not his favorite will also have fans agreeing with him. The MCU has made many mistakes in the costume department, but the bright, toyetic costume Cap wore in the 2012 team-up movie was one of the worst. We see that they were trying to go classic with it, but it just didn’t fit the more grounded style of the franchise – something that makes the Winter Soldier suit work so well.
Unfortunately, it seems that Evans might have worn his last Captain America costume, as he recently wrapped on Avengers 4 and everyone thinks the film will see the end of the character. However, Evans did clarify at this same event that his recent emotional tweet on the matter doesn’t necessarily mean he’s done with the franchise, so who knows? In any case, we can’t wait to see Cap back on the big screen this coming May.
