Sprint’s 5G network launches in May
Sprint plans to launch its 5G network this May, starting in Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, and Kansas City. 5G service is also supposed to come to Houston, Los Angeles, New York, Phoenix, and Washington, DC in the first half of the year.
Like most of the just-months-away 5G network launches, details are surprisingly slim around Sprint’s plans. The company declined to state what its 5G service plans would look like, and it was vague about what kind of speeds to expect.
Asked about speeds on a call this morning, Sprint chief technology officer John Saw said that, in one demo video the company ran today, someone was shown getting 430 Mbps — about 10x what you might receive on LTE today. Saw caveated, though, saying, “We don’t really want to...

Huawei has the best first draft for a foldable phone
We’re at the beginning of the beginning of the foldable smartphone era, as you might be able to tell from the explosion of hype surrounding these sci-fi devices. Attending Mobile World Congress this week, I look at the excitement coming from manufacturers, mobile carriers, and eager tech enthusiasts, and I see tremendous, almost universal energy and demand for this category to become a significant part of our shared technological future.
In the past, the market’s waited for Apple to popularize new product categories, as it did with the iPad for tablets, but now the rest of the tech industry is forging ahead. Patience is low, enthusiasm is high, and, judging by the Huawei Mate X unveiled yesterday, product design and development are...

Microsoft’s new open model for Windows and HoloLens 2 impresses Epic’s Tim Sweeney
Microsoft unveiled its latest HoloLens 2 headset at an event at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona yesterday. While the headset has all the tech improvements you might expect, Microsoft surprised the industry with some solid commitments to being open in what it calls “the third era of computing.” Microsoft technical fellow and HoloLens inventor Alex Kipman made three key commitments for the company’s Mixed Reality platform:
- “We believe in an open app store model. Developers will have the freedom to create their own stores.”
- “We believe in an open web browsing model.”
- “We believe in an open API surface area and driver model.”

The latest Android devices now let you log into apps without requiring a password
Here’s a good reason to update to your latest version of Google Play Services: Android devices running version 7.0 and later can now log you into apps and websites without requiring you to type in a password. Using FIDO2, an open standard developed by the FIDO Alliance, the update instead uses your fingerprint or PIN to log you into various services.
While complex passwords can be a secure method to keep your account safe, they are often long, hard to remember, and should be updated periodically (unless you use a password manager.) Two-factor authentication is helpful too, but can be annoying and difficult to access if you’re traveling internationally. With this update and certification, Google and the FIDO Alliance is hoping to move...

BlackBerry’s new Key2 has double the storage and a very red color scheme
Almost nine months after we first saw the original Key2, BlackBerry has announced a new bright red version of its flagship handset. Along with its new color, the phone also comes with 128GB of onboard storage, up from the 64GB in the original.
The spec of the red Key2 version is otherwise very similar. It’s got an unchanged mid-range Snapdragon 660 processor flanked by 6GB of RAM, and a 4.5-inch LCD along with a dual camera setup on its rear. Disappointingly it also keeps the same software, and will launch with last year’s Android 8.1 Oreo.
Getting the Key2 in red will cost you $749 (or £699, or €779, depending on where you are) when it launches, although TCL, who is manufacturing the device, is yet to announce an official release date....

Qualcomm is pushing to make VR and AR headsets work with 5G phones
Chip maker Qualcomm is promoting a platform for smartphone-powered virtual and augmented reality headsets that rely on 5G networks, alongside partners like Acer, LG, and Sprint. The company announced its plans today at Mobile World Congress, saying it would help push phone-powered VR and AR (collectively, “XR”) headsets onto the market in 2019.
Qualcomm will create an “XR-optimized” certification program for phones using its Snapdragon 855 processors, indicating that they’ll work with any headset in that ecosystem. So far, there are two officially supported viewers: the Acer OJO, a virtual reality headset announced last August, and the Nreal Light mixed reality glasses, which were unveiled at CES in January. 1TB microSD cards are now a thing
The inexorable march of increasing storage capacities continues today with the announcement of the world’s first 1-terabyte microSD cards. Micron and Western Digital’s SanDisk brand have both launched UHS-I microSDXC products today at Mobile World Congress, which will be good news for anyone looking at Samsung’s new 1TB Galaxy S10 Plus and thinking “what if that, but doubled?”
Of the two cards, Western Digital is claiming a performance advantage by citing up to 160MB/s read speed versus 100MB/s for Micron’s. The Micron card’s max write performance is 5MB/s faster at up to 95MB/s, however.
The SanDisk card will be available from April for $449.99, which is a pretty high convenience premium considering the new 512GB card in the same line...

The Google Assistant is coming to Android Messages right before Allo dies
Today, Google is announcing that “over the coming months” it is going to roll out Google Assistant integration into Android Messages. If you’re using it to text, a Google Assistant button might appear in the smart replies section of the app. If you tap it, it will ask the Assistant a question and give you an option to put the answer directly into your text message thread. To start, the feature is limited to English.
If you’re worried that this means that Google is going to be reading your text messages, the company says that’s not the case at all. The only information that’s sent to Google’s servers is the text of the Google Assistant button you tap. Those so-called “suggestion chips” are generated by a local analysis of what’s in the...

HTC’s 5G Hub is a 5G hotspot, Android entertainment device, and battery pack

Oppo shows off its own foldable phone
Perhaps spurred on by the hype surrounding Samsung’s Galaxy Fold and Huawei’s Mate X, Oppo VP Brian Shen has revealed images of his company’s own take on a foldable phone. Shen makes it clear in his Weibo post that Oppo isn’t yet planning to ship the prototype device unless it sees a lot of demand, but the pictures show that the company is leaning towards Huawei’s design more than Samsung’s.
That’s to say there’s a single large OLED panel that wraps around both sides of the phone when it’s folded, rather than being folded away on the inside. There’s also a thicker bar on one side that houses cameras and other components.
Whether Oppo decides to ship this phone or not, it’s clear that we’re approaching the point where similar phones...

The hostless Oscars ceremony was all about funny dunks and sweet moments
For the 91st Academy Awards, the producers relied on a series of self-referential dunks to get through the first telecast in 30 years without a host — and the result was solidly entertaining.
The show opened with Queen, led by former American Idol contestant Adam Lambert, giving a somewhat awkward performance that met with a lukewarm response. But the real opening came from comedians Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, and Maya Rudolph, who started the awards segment by presenting Best Supporting Actress. Fey, Poehler, and Rudolph — longtime friends and collaborators since working on Saturday Night Live together — pulled no punches addressing the elephant in the room.
“We are not your hosts, but we’re going to stand here a little too long so that...

The 2019 Oscars ceremony got off to a mildly awkward start, as Maya Rudolph, Tina Fey, and Amy Poehler, presenting the Best Supporting Actress award, did a little comedy routine acknowledging that this year’s presentation has no host, no Most Popular Film award, and no awards given out during commercials. (“And Mexico will not pay for the wall.”) It was a wry little dig at the many embarrassing controversies the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences have faced this year as they attempted to retool the ceremony. The attempts to shorten the ceremony by cutting some awards, while simultaneously adding more crowd-pleasing elements, led to a lot of online backlash.
The producers responded by streamlining the ceremony in quieter ways:...

Google Assistant Oscar ads reimagine classic movies with a helpful AI
A series of new Google Assistant ads aired during the 91st annual Oscars Sunday night, reimagining how some classic and recent films would change with Google’s AI helper.
Movies like 2001: A Space Odyssey, Ladybird, Psycho, and Scream all appeared in short ads that played throughout the award show. The ads reconsidered how crucial scenes from each movie would work with Google Assistant saving time or assisting the characters.
This isn’t the first time Google Assistant has appeared in classic movies; a previous commercial also reimagined Home Alone with an AI-friendly scenario back in December.
A collection of the commercials that aired tonight can be seen below.
Turns out there’s a lot less drama when you have the Google Assistant...

Lenovo’s smallest and best-selling ThinkPad laptops get refreshed for 2019
Lenovo is making some largely incremental updates to its more affordable IdeaPad laptops and its ThinkPad X and T series today. While $1,000 and above laptops might be the more exciting and premium devices, it’s the models under $1,000 that most consumers opt for. Lenovo is now trying to bring some its more premium features to these lower price points.
Lenovo’s updated IdeaPad S540 now includes Intel’s 8th Gen Core i7 processors or AMD’s Ryzen 7 3700U processors and an option for Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 1050 discrete graphics card. Lenovo has also trimmed its bezels by more than 25 percent, and added a privacy guard for the webcam — both are trends that started at the premium end of laptops. The IdeaPad S540 will be available in both 14-...

Disney Debuts Stunning New Trailer For The Lion King
“Nants ingonyama bagithi baba.”
That might look like double Deutsch, but it’s actually the iconic opening words to “The Circle of Life,” which literally translates to ‘there comes a lion’ – fitting, really, given that it’s now synonymous with The Lion King, Disney’s timeless classic that tells the story of young cub following in his father’s footsteps.
And now, much like Cinderella and The Jungle Book before it, The Lion King will be receiving a fresh lick of paint this summer thanks to Jon Favreau, who’ll be taking us back to the Pride Lands for a live-action adventure the likes of which we’ve never seen before. That’s mostly because an absolutely incredible ensemble cast has been assembled here, featuring everyone from Donald Glover (Solo: A Star Wars Story) to Beyoncé to the frankly irreplaceable James Earl Jones.
And now, with its release date quickly approaching, Disney has dropped a new trailer online. Though not terribly long, its mix of vibrant cinematography, richly textured CGI, and of course, a few familiar music cues, should hit all the right notes to get fans emotional and maybe even a bit misty-eyed.
Overall, it’s another promising look at the upcoming live-action remake and has us hopeful that Favreau will strike gold again after his success with The Jungle Book. Something tells us we have nothing to worry about though, especially because of that aforementioned cast that Disney’s lined up.
The Lion King is the last of the three remakes that the studio’s releasing this year, after March’s Dumbo and May’s Aladdin. We wouldn’t be surprised if the films pull in more cash as they go along, too, with the Savanna-set epic poised to bring in a ton of money at the box office.

Shazam! Star Zachary Levi Blasts Captain Marvel Trolls
Captain Marvel is arriving in theaters in slightly over a weeks’ time with a whole load of buzz behind it, but with this being the internet and all, it only figures that Carol Danvers’ solo debut has also been the subject of some backlash.
As you may have heard already, the Rotten Tomatoes page for Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck’s film has been flooded with negative comments in a campaign to tank the movie’s audience approval score. And since DC superhero Shazam once went under the Captain Marvel name, that means actor Zachary Levi has also been roped into this online feud, with many commenters on Rotten Tomatoes and elsewhere encouraging filmgoers to check out Shazam! instead.
Not happy to see such trolling committed in his movie’s name, Levi has shared a video condemning what he describes as “inflammatory,” “defamatory,” and “completely fictitious” reviews and comments posted online.
“I just found this out last night, and for anyone out there who thinks you’re doing me a favor, you’re doing Shazam! a favor, or you’re doing Warner Bros.— you’re not,” Levi said. “This is not helping anyone or anything.”
Here’s @ZacharyLevi asking fans to stop piting #CaptainMarvel and #Shazam against each other, because IT ISN’T HELPING ANYONE. He’s also calling out the fake reviews and fabricated/defamatory posts about @brielarson. —It’s time for those people to really listen. pic.twitter.com/SzL0iowj5T

The Chuck star went on to dismiss the rivalry between Shazam! and Captain Marvel, saying that “anyone out there who is holding on to some bone like they need to pick a side and pick a fight is sorely mistaken.” Levi added that he hopes fans can “chill on that,” before reaffirming his low opinion of the ongoing backlash:
“This is really low blow type of stuff to be going and lying, first of all, you know, is just the bottom of the barrel to me. But to be lying in an attempt to discredit or defame somebody, I think is just really sad…”
While the odds are precisely zero that Levi’s words will halt the continuing stream of online negativity towards Captain Marvel, the MCU’s next release has so far received a glowing response from early viewers, and according to Fandango, has already surpassed the likes of Wonder Woman and Aquaman in pre-sales.
In short, the overall situation actually bodes pretty well for Captain Marvel, but the real test comes when the film hits theaters on March 8th, 2019. After that, Levi makes his DCEU debut when Shazam! comes out on April 5th.
