On New Year’s Day, a spacecraft will zoom by the most distant object humanity has ever visited
Just after midnight on January 1st, a NASA spacecraft will whiz past the most distant space rock that’s ever been visited in our Solar System. This remote interplanetary flyby will be over in a blink. But if successful, the event could tell us a whole lot about the objects that dominate the far reaches of our cosmic neighborhood.
The robotic spacecraft making this daring visit is called New Horizons, and it’s been traveling through space for the last 13 years. You may remember this famous bot: it was the first human-made object to ever visit Pluto in the summer of 2015. Ever since that flyby, New Horizons has been plunging farther into the Solar System. Three years later, it’s ready to meet up with another faraway target, a rock...

Apple will reportedly start assembling its premium iPhone models in India
Apple is set to start building its high-end iPhone models in India in early 2019, with the company partnering with the local branch of Foxconn (which already handles a huge chunk of Apple’s existing iPhone manufacturing), according to a report from CNBC.
While Apple has been assembling iPhones in India since 2017, beginning with the iPhone SE and followed by the iPhone 6S earlier this year, the newly reported Foxconn partnership would see newer and more expensive iPhones like the iPhone X start to be assembled in India as well.
It’s a move that would make a lot of sense for Apple. In recent years, the Indian government has put in place high tariffs on imported smartphones, while also offering cheaper import rates on smartphone parts in...

Black Mirror: Bandersnatch Arrives This Friday, First Trailer Debuts
There’ve been rumblings of late that Netflix wouldn’t be dropping a full season of Black Mirror as usual this new year, but instead they’d release a special one-off installment that’ll have a unique format. Well, it looks like the rumors have been proven right, as the streaming service has shared a trailer for Bandersnatch today, an episode that looks to be playing around with the Choose Your Own Adventure structure. What’s more, it’s arriving tomorrow, December 28th.
Set in 1984, Bandersnatch stars Dunkirk‘s Fionn Whitehead as a young programmer who’s tasked with adapting a chaotic fantasy novel – the fictional Bandersnatch by Jerome F. Davies, who apparently killed his wife – into a video game, which makes him start questioning his own reality. The trailer promises a really trippy experience that feels recognizably Black Mirror but also like something fresh and different from previous episodes.
The promo runs with the tagline “Change your mind. Change your past… present… future” and teases that Bandersnatch is going to be “A Netflix Event” rather than a regular old episode. There’ve been reports of an interactive installment of the sci-fi anthology series for a while now, and it seems that we’re finally going to see how writer and showrunner Charlie Brooker has realized that tricky but bold concept.
Netflix has yet to reveal the running time for the installment, but it’s thought that it’ll be a feature-length piece. We also know that The Maze Runner‘s Will Poulter and Asim Chaudhry will co-star, but details beyond that remain scarce. Thankfully, though, we don’t have long to go before we learn more, as Black Mirror: Bandersnatch will be with us tomorrow.

Captain Marvel Promo Image Offers New Look At Returning MCU Villain
Decades before the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy entered the fray, Carol Danvers was in a super-powered team of her own, and in this new promotional image from the upcoming Captain Marvel, we get another look at the line-up of Starforce.
Amidst this crew of Kree warriors, we can see Carol herself in the green version of her trademark helmet. Meanwhile, Jude Law’s looking very serious in his undisclosed role. As it stands, the most popular rumor is that he’s playing Yon-Rogg, in which case he’s a character with real villain potential.
Elsewhere, we see Gemma Chan as Minn-Erva, who’s said to have a bit of a rivalry going with her colleague Carol, and for a more familiar face, we have Djimon Hounsou as Korath the Pursuer, who’ll go on to play a villainous part in the first Guardians outing. As for the other two in this picture, their identities are still to be confirmed, but the white-haired figure is generally thought to be Ultimus, a character whose comic book connections range from Thor to The Eternals.
As the merchandising phase for Captain Marvel goes underway, you can expect plenty more promotional material to make the rounds, though this has already proven to be a pretty generous few weeks when it comes to Carol’s big screen debut. The biggest reveal was no doubt the trailer that dropped near the start of the month, which got the internet feeling more pumped than ever for the interplanetary adventure to come, but the shorter TV spot that came out on Christmas Day didn’t hurt matters either.
We’ll find out if Carol and her Kree team can live up to the hype when Captain Marvel hits theaters on March 8th, 2019.

Leaked Avengers: Endgame Promo Images Tease The Heroes’ New Looks
Now that we’re only a few months away from the release of Avengers: Endgame, material from upcoming merchandise is starting to leak, thereby giving us some new hints at the film’s plot, which is otherwise being kept tightly under wraps. And alongside those potentially revealing LEGO set titles, we now have some new promo images that tease a few of the revamped looks we’ll be seeing for our heroes.
The following five pieces of art – likely to be used on T-shirts, posters, etc. – showcase Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow, Chris Evans’ Captain America, Josh Brolin’s Thanos and not one but two separate images of Jeremy Renner’s Clint Barton. These might be of the most interest to fans, as they give us a pretty good look at his new costume that makes clear his transition from Hawkeye to Ronin.
The Black Widow pic is interesting as well, as it’s the latest bit of evidence that tells us Natasha will return to her redheaded appearance, after switching to blonde in Avengers: Infinity War. Likewise, the Cap image features the Sentinel of Liberty in his classic outfit and helmet. Meanwhile, the Thanos piece is particularly impressive as the Mad Titan cuts a mean, intimidating figure in his full golden armor. Which means he must take it off his scarecrow at some point, presumably so he can have a rematch with the Avengers.
Back to the former agent Barton for a moment, though, and Renner’s avenging archer was absent for Infinity War but the first Endgame trailer revealed that he’ll be a very different person when he returns. Complete with a mohawk and newfound prowess with a sword, Clint has become Ronin. Fans are theorizing that he lost his family in the Snap, hence his darker attitude and his return to superhero’ing, but that remains as speculation for now. Regardless, we’ll surely find out for certain when Avengers: Endgame hits theaters on April 26th.

Avengers: Endgame Fan Art Teases A Brutal Death For Captain America
In the absence of much concrete information about the plot of the film at present, there are many predictions that Marvel fans have about Avengers: Endgame that are so widely believed that they’re basically expected to come true when April hits. And one of the biggest is that Captain America will reach his end by the time the credits roll on Earth’s Mightiest Heroes’ second battle with Thanos.
We don’t know how it’ll go down, but the general consensus is that Steve Rogers will sacrifice himself in the line of duty. After all, he’s just that sort of a guy. But how could the heartbreaking moment itself turn out? Well, fan artist Boss Logic has imagined a brutal, gut-wrenching scene in which Steve’s left to die in a snowy landscape. A hefty print stained with blood tells us that the Mad Titan’s responsible, and you can also see that Cap’s body forms a sort of star in the snow, reflecting his insignia.
The discussion over Steve’s fate has been going on for a long while, but Chris Evans turned the low-burning rumors into an inferno of fan theories when he wrote a heartfelt message about his time playing the character on social media once Endgame had wrapped filming. This seemed to confirm he was done with the role, but the Russo brothers then made us doubt that as they promised that Evans wasn’t going anywhere. Although, considering that they’d previously told us the movie’s title wasn’t Endgame, we might not be able to trust them.
Alternatively, perhaps Evans really is on his way out of the MCU, but the character of Captain America isn’t, with someone else maybe in line to take on the mantle next. Other theories suggest that the film’s use of time travel will allow Steve to go back to the 1940s and live out the rest of his life with Peggy Carter, finally getting that date with her that he was denied when he became frozen in time at the end of Captain America: The First Avenger.
In any case, all we can do right now is speculate, but we’ll hopefully get the answers we crave when Avengers: Endgame arrives in April.

Zoe Quinn’s Goddess Mode makes cyberpunk magic from the internet
In the words of its writer, Hugo Award nominee Zoe Quinn, the Vertigo comic book Goddess Mode is a “weird neon baby of cyberpunk and magical girls,” a world where Arthur C. Clark’s first law reigns supreme, where any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. Our heroine is Cassandra Price, a brilliant mess of a human being eking out an existence at a megacorporation that her father’s work helped elevate into one of the most lucrative companies in the world.
She is a “code janitor,” a woman who deals in digital trash, desperately working to preserve the mediocre health care coverage that allows her father to stay alive despite the futuristic disease that has consigned him to a coma. “A lot of people need...

What’s wrong with Facebook and how to fix it
At a certain point, all the bad Facebook headlines start to blur together. Earlier this month, a New York Times investigation found that Facebook had carved out exceptions to its data-sharing policies for major companies like Netflix and Spotify, agreements that were still in place as early as last year. In the same week, we learned the company was sucking up more data from third party apps through its login system, had enabled a misinformation campaign in Bangladesh, and keeps logging locations for users who turn off location services. After a while, it’s hard to keep up with all the ways the company is preying on its users.
As complex as each story seems, the broader takeaway is pretty simple: Facebook has an enormous amount of...

The year of deleted tweets
In July, Disney fired Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn. Cause for termination: a series of offensive tweets, in most cases about a decade old, that were circulated by a right-wing media personality. Gunn’s tweets, many of which were about molestation or pedophilia, were indefensible. But the method in which they were dug up, as well as the people who circulated them — bad-faith conspiracy theorists who used old jokes made in poor taste to brand Gunn as a pedophile — are part of a larger trend in which problematic or out-of-context tweets are being ripped from the past to ruin their author in the present.

The first 11 apps to install on your new Mac
Apple’s macOS operating system has matured to the point where, out of the box, your new Mac laptop or desktop pretty much has the bases covered when it comes to email, calendar management, and some basic productivity tools. But there’s a whole world of better and more powerful Mac software out there that can make everything from GIF-making to photo editing to window organization a whole lot easier.
While paying for software might seem like some pre-Google anachronism, many of the best Mac applications out there cost just a few dollars and can drastically improve your workflow or your day-to-day computer use — without any privacy concerns or intrusive advertising. And some are so good that they warrant a monthly or annual subscription —...

The Verge 2018 tech report card: Amazon
At the start of 2018, everyone loved Amazon. The company had very recently announced a Willy Wonka-ish contest that would deliver a brand new headquarter to one special city in the United States. In one act, a mercurial and generous Jeff Bezos would bestow a city with riches beyond their imagination: an all-American tech company, tens of thousands of jobs, and $5 billion in investments.
By the time a winner was actually announced last month, reality had sunk in. Amazon had no plans to revitalize a struggling metropolitan area in the next great tale of the American Dream, as many believed it would. Instead, its presence would reshape the very character of wherever it moved, likely driving out longtime residents and replacing them with...
