On Sunday, Huawei got some life-threatening news from Google. Following an executive order that gives the federal government the power to block purchases of foreign-made technology deemed to be a security threat, Google announced that it had pulled Huawei’s license to use Android. Yesterday, Commerce softened the blow by issuing a license allowing Huawei three months to send software updates to existing devices, but even so, Intel, Qualcomm, and a number of other suppliers may be moving to cut the company off immediately.
The company has reportedly stockpiled enough US-made parts to last it anywhere from three months to a year, so it will have some time to prepare for the crisis. But at some point that stockpile will run out, and Huawei...
Vizio has announced that its latest 4K TVs are now available at retailers. The company’s TVs have always stuck a very impressive price to performance balance, and that seems likely to carry on this year with more local dimming zones and improved brightness performance in several models. Plus, Apple’s AirPlay 2 and HomeKit will soon be coming to Vizio TVs new and old.
The TV lineup is led by the P-Series Quantum X, Vizio’s flagship 4K HDR model that comes in 65-inch ($2,199.99) and 75-inch ($3,499.99) sizes. Those are obviously a step up from the prices that most consumers associate with Vizio, but the company believes the P-Series Quantum X can compete with the very best 4K TVs on the market right now. With 384 or 480 local dimming...

Samsung’s Galaxy S10 and S10 Plus could soon be available in a new red color scheme according to a leak from Roland Quandt over at WinFuture.de. The color will reportedly be called “Cardinal Red,” and it will be available for both the Samsung Galaxy S10 and S10 Plus, with no mention of whether it will be available for the budget S10E. There’s no exact date given for when the new color will be released, but Quandt says it’s “coming soon.”
Significantly, there’s also no mention of which countries the new color is expected to launch in. In May last year, Samsung announced that the Galaxy S9 would soon be available in red and gold, but in the end only the gold color actually ended up coming to the US. Last year’s red color remained exclusive...

The momentous news that Google is cutting off its Android relationship with Huawei in response to a US government ban on the Chinese giant wasn’t much of a surprise to Huawei. A fresh report from Bloomberg today adds to the mounting evidence of Huawei preparing for being shunned by the United States. It suggests that Huawei’s App Gallery, which has been present on Huawei and Honor Android devices for a while, is in fact an earnest, albeit somewhat clandestine, effort to build a genuine alternative to Google’s dominant Play Store.
According to Bloomberg, Huawei pitched app makers in 2018 with the offer of helping them make inroads into China, the world’s largest smartphone market, if they built software for its App Gallery. Like all other...

Google Calendar and Google Keep have become the latest Google apps to receive a dark mode on Android, allowing you to save battery life or maybe just enjoy a darker aesthetic at the press of a button. Google Calendar will support the mode on devices running Android Nougat and above, while Keep’s will also be available on Lollipop. Google Keep’s dark mode can be enabled in its settings menu, while for Google Calendar you’ll need to head into the Theme sub-menu in Settings. Sorry Apple users, there’s no news yet of the feature coming to either app on iOS.
The updates have come just in time for Android Q’s system-wide dark mode feature, called Dark Theme. When Google announced the new mode, it said that all its first party apps would be...

Chevrolet introduced a new feature designed to force younger drivers to buckle their seatbelts. Teens are notorious seatbelt scofflaws: in 2017, only 59 percent of high school students reported always wearing seat belts when driving or riding in the front passenger seat, according to the CDC. Chevy’s new feature will actively prevent teens from driving until they fasten their seatbelts.
The new “Buckle to Drive” feature will come standard on all 2020 Chevy Traverse, Malibu, and Colorado vehicles. It works by programing a key fob so that the “teen driver” setting is on by default. That way, when your teen uses their key to start the car, the seatbelt will need to be clicked in order to unlock the gear shift. Moreover, the radio will also...
Sony isn’t holding its usual E3 press conference this year, but the company has been gradually revealing parts of its next-generation PlayStation console. The PlayStation 5 will support 8K graphics, 3D audio, SSD storage, and backwards compatibility with existing PlayStation 4 titles. That SSD storage should boost load times significantly, and Sony offered up some clear demonstrations of exactly that today.
During a Sony investor relations meeting (PDF), the company demonstrated PlayStation 5 load times using Spider-Man to load cities and rapidly navigate throughout them. While the PS4 takes around eight seconds to load a Spider-Man level, the PS5 (identified simply as next-generation) does the same in less than a second. The PS5 can...

The Carrot Weather app has received a massive update today which introduces a host of new notification options for rain, snow, lightning strikes, storms, and even moon phases. Several of the new features are included as part of the app’s new “Tier 3” subscription, while the existing “Premium” and “Ultrapremium” subscription tiers have been renamed “Tier 1” and “Tier 2” respectively.
Weather app Dark Sky first popularized hyper-localized, granular weather notifications, and it became one of the most popular weather apps as a result. Carrot has long used Dark Sky’s data for its predictions, but until now you’ve needed to use an Apple Watch or a Mac to receive precipitation notifications. Now, though, Carrot is bringing the same level of...

The TV adaptation of A Song of Ice and Fire might be over, but its author George RR Martin says he’s still hard at work on finishing the book series behind HBO’s adaptation. In a blog post published yesterday, the author said “I’m still here, and I’m still busy,” adding that he’s currently hard at work on a number of TV shows, short films, feature projects, a video game, and of course the next entry in the series of books.
After season six of the show overtook his published work, there’s been plenty of speculation about how closely the endings of the TV show and books will match one another. Martin doesn’t go into too many specifics, but suggests that there’ll be both similarities and differences. Not only are the books able to be...

The US Department of Homeland Security has warned of the dangers of Chinese-made drones, according to an alert obtained by CNN. The alert cautions that consumer-level drones, of which the vast majority in North America are sold by Shenzhen-based DJI, could send back sensitive flight information to headquarters on Chinese soil that could subsequently be accessed by the government.
The DHS alert continues:
“The United States government has strong concerns about any technology product that takes American data into the territory of an authoritarian state that permits its intelligence services to have unfettered access to that data or otherwise abuses that access.
Those concerns apply with equal force to certain Chinese-made (unmanned...

Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei has downplayed the impact of the US executive order that could cripple Huawei’s ability to collaborate with American companies like Google and Qualcomm. In comments to Chinese media gathered at the company’s Shenzhen headquarters, reported on by the Global Times state newspaper, Ren says the 90-day extension to normal business relations granted by the US won’t make much difference to Huawei due to the company’s existing contingency plans.
“In such a critical moment, I’m grateful to US companies, as they’ve contributed a lot to Huawei’s development and showed their conscientiousness on the matter,” Ren says. “As far as I know, US companies have been making efforts to persuade the US government to let them...
Artist, fashion designer, and DJ Virgil Abloh has collaborated with Pioneer DJ to create custom off-white and transparent CDJs and a mixer that will be displayed at Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Art in an exhibition called “FIGURES OF SPEECH.”
Abloh first teased the equipment on his Instagram in April, then DJed with it shortly after at Coachella. The CDJ-2000NXS2 and DJM-900NXS2 are Pioneer DJ’s flagship pieces of gear for professional DJs, and Abloh calls his version the “skeleton” models.

A new lawsuit filed against Faze Clan, a popular e-sports organization and YouTube network, by one of the internet’s most popular personalities is shaping up to be a milestone moment for online content creators.
Turner “Tfue” Tenney is one of the most prominent Twitch streamers in the world, having catapulted to the upper echelon of online creators thanks to his prolific Fortnite playing and consistent performance in the game’s competitive circuit. But a new lawsuit filed by Tenney’s lawyers today alleges that his employer, Faze Clan, has taken financial advantage of him by way of an exploitative contract and unlawful behavior on behalf of Faze’s management.

Huawei had its Android license cut off by Google over the weekend thanks to a US government order. But Chinese users appear to be rallying around the company, with social media posts on Weibo and Douyin showing strong support for Huawei, according to What’s On Weibo.
The debate over Huawei and national security was thrust back into the spotlight over the weekend, when, as part of a US government order, Google revoked Huawei’s Android license, which cuts the company’s phones off entirely from most Google apps and services. It’s less of a problem for users in China, given nearly all Google services don’t function in China anyway, but the move is far more problematic for Huawei’s efforts to expand beyond its Chinese customer base to places...
Over the weekend, news broke that Google revoked Huawei’s Android license for new devices, cutting off the Chinese tech company’s access to critical Google apps. Now, longtime Huawei critics on Capitol Hill are applauding Google’s move and encouraging other tech companies to follow suit.
Lawmakers like Sens. Marco Rubio (R-FL), Tom Cotton (R-AR), and Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) have been sounding the alarm on Chinese companies like Huawei for years, and in statements provided to The Verge today, approved of Google’s decision. Rubio called the action “wise,” and Van Hollen said it sent a “clear message.”

T-Mobile and Sprint started the day with very good news when FCC chairman Ajit Pai said he would urge the commission to approve their industry-transforming merger. Stocks of both companies soared soon after. But only a few hours later, Bloomberg is reporting that the US Department of Justice is leaning toward blocking the merger over antitrust concerns. This isn’t the first time we’ve heard that the Justice Department remains unconvinced that a combined T-Mobile and Sprint would be a positive development for consumers.
Citing a person familiar with the DoJ’s ongoing merger review, Bloomberg says that “the remedies proposed by the companies don’t go far enough to resolve antitrust concerns.” T-Mobile and Sprint agreed to several...

Why did Daenerys Targaryen snap so suddenly in Game of Thrones’ final season? One fan in a New York bar has a theory he’s happy to share: Varys has been slowly poisoning her. “That’s why she looks so terrible,” Michael says of Daenerys in the penultimate episode, referring to a scene in which she looks exhausted and unwashed. “[This poison] makes you go crazy and violent before you’ve had the final dose,” he adds. “So the fan theory is that he succeeded in poisoning her part-way.” Thus, her genocidal spree.
Michael isn’t sure he’s bought into the idea entirely, but all is about to be revealed. Dozens of fans have gathered to watch the final episode of Game of Thrones on a dimly lit patio in north Brooklyn. It’s pleasantly warm, which...

Zoe Saldana’s known for being the queen of the Hollywood franchises after her roles in Avatar, Star Trek and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She could’ve added another one to collection, though, if she’d landed the part of Lois Lane in Man of Steel, which director Zack Snyder has revealed the actress was once up for.
In an interview with Comic Book Debate, the filmmaker spoke about what Amy Adams brought to the table as Supes’ girlfriend, referencing the fact that the star inspired Lois’ subplot in Batman V Superman which saw her investigating African terrorism. Snyder then casually revealed that, before Adams was cast, the choice was between her and Saldana.
“Amy actually inspired that opening scene in Batman v Superman. She mentioned journalists who have been in war zones and we went along with it. At a time, it was between her and Zoe Saldana.”
When questioned about Saldana coming so close to being Lois in the DCEU, Snyder laughed and added: “They’re totally different, but their presence is super strong.”
If Saldana had been cast, she would’ve been the first non-Caucasian actress to portray Lois in live-action media, foreshadowing Snyder’s later casting of the Israeli Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman and the Polynesian Jason Momoa as Aquaman. The Latina might have made a great Lois, but Adams is definitely terrific in the role, so things probably worked out for the best. Besides, her commitments to DC likely would’ve prevented Saldana from signing up as Gamora for 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy.
As for Adams’ Lois Lane, it seems likely that Justice League will prove to be the swansong of her version of The Daily Planet’s best reporter. Apart from all those rumors that Henry Cavill won’t be returning as Superman, Adams herself has said she believes the Last Son of Krypton and his universe is being rebooted by Warner Bros.
Tell us, though, would you’ve liked to see Zoe Saldana as Lois in Man of Steel? Join the conversation in the comments section down below.
