Samsung is reportedly making a budget Bixby-powered smart speaker
Samsung promised a Bixby-powered Galaxy Home smart speaker back in August, a premium device that could potentially compete against Apple’s HomePod and the Amazon Echo Plus. While that speaker still isn’t available and doesn’t have a set release date, the company is reportedly also planning a second Bixby speaker that comes in black and according to SamMobile, citing an anonymous source, may be a more affordable option that can compete with the likes of cheaper smart speakers.
The second Bixby speaker reportedly has the model number SM-V310, while the Galaxy Home is model number SM-V510, suggesting that there could always be more Bixby smart speakers down the line. There aren’t any known specs for the lower-end speaker yet, but it’s...

The Verge 2018 tech report card: Tesla
In 2018, Tesla turned its biggest ever quarterly profit, and its first profit in two years. The company shipped close to some 100,000 Model 3s in the first full year of production of the most affordable vehicle it makes. SpaceX, one of Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s other companies, successfully launched its brand new Falcon Heavy rocket for the first time ever — and Musk used it to send one of the original Tesla Roadsters into space. By those measures, 2018 was a wild success for Tesla.
Of course, there’s more to the story: a failed plan to go private, announced by Musk on Twitter; a beef with the SEC; difficulty retaining top executives not named Elon Musk; and a close call with death. There were questions about the safety of Tesla’s cars, the...

Lady Gaga teases an anime cyborg at her Las Vegas concert
Lady Gaga has been teasing a new animated character on social media as part of her Las Vegas residency show. It looks to be a cyborg with long blue hair and the ability to fly through space, a character that Gaga was also dressed as on Friday. In a short, mysterious clip posted to YouTube and Instagram, the character looks around at a shining star before making contact with it and absorbing its powers.
The anime-like character charges up, while crying, “What’s happening to me?” before hurtling through space with the newfound energy. The video ends with the appearance of “PetGa,” an alien being first seen during the release and promotion of Lady Gaga’s 2013 album ArtPop. PetGa says fondly, “Hello Gaga,” and then the word “Enigma” flashes...

The Verge 2018 tech report card: SpaceX
After a banner 2017, SpaceX decided to one-up itself in 2018 by launching the world’s most powerful rocket, which flung a sports car beyond the orbit of Mars.
Just two months into the year, SpaceX finally made good on its long held promise to launch the coveted Falcon Heavy — an upgraded version of the company’s Falcon 9 rocket. Consisting of three Falcon 9 cores strapped together, the Falcon Heavy is capable of putting more weight into low Earth orbit than any other rocket currently in operation. SpaceX CEO Elon Musk first announced the concept for the rocket in 2011, with the goal of launching it in 2013 or 2014. Obviously, it took longer than that, and Musk even admitted that the program grew so complicated he tried to cancel it a few...

The biggest video games, tech news, and apocalyptic anxieties of 1998
We’re heading into the last days of 2018, and by extension, the last days of our look back at 1998 — where the dot-com bubble was steadily inflating, cyberspace was transforming everything from crime to horoscopes, and the end of the internet (or maybe civilization itself) was just a year away with Y2K. And that means one thing in the media world: time for some retrospectives!
I’ll be deviating slightly from the normal format by accepting a few pieces from both earlier in December and later in January, so I can offer a spread of analysis looking back at the year.

China lifts a freeze on new video games but excludes its biggest player
China just lifted its ban on new video games after nearly a year of keeping games from getting released. Its regulatory arm approved 80 new games today, as first reported by Reuters. But curiously enough, none of them are from the country’s biggest gaming company, Tencent.
Tencent is best known as the company that owns WeChat, China’s pervasive app that can make payments, host mini-apps, and connect people through messages and emojis. But its main source of revenue is video games it owns like Arena of Valor (also known as Honor of Kings), League of Legends, and ones that it’s invested heavily in such as PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and Fortnite. But as China tightened its video game rules this year and Tencent has struggled to adapt,...

Robert Downey Jr. Wishes Sherlock Holmes Co-Star Jude Law A Happy Birthday
To mark the birthday of his old Sherlock Holmes co-star and future MCU inhabitant Jude Law, Robert Downey Jr. took to Twitter with a special message for the man who once played the Watson to his Holmes.
The star of next year’s Avengers: Endgame sent his birthday wishes in the form of a GIF featuring himself and Law gliding across the ballroom floor, with the accompanying message reading:
“To my favorite dance partner… Happy birthday.”
To my favorite dance partner… Happy birthday. pic.twitter.com/OqvzMA16dp
— Robert Downey Jr (@RobertDowneyJr) December 29, 2018
There’s a curious amount of overlap between the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the recent screen adaptations of Arthur Conan Doyle’s works. As well as the main duo from 2009’s Sherlock Holmes and 2011’s Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows both having important roles in the superhero saga, their equivalent characters in the Sherlock TV show are also played by MCU regulars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman. To complicate matters further, Rachel McAdams has even played the love interest of both Downey’s Sherlock in the 2009 film and Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange in the Marvel franchise.
It made for a slightly surreal moment then when Downey and Cumberbatch crossed paths earlier this year in Avengers: Infinity War, but directors Anthony and Joe Russo refrained from including a Sherlock joke for fear of the reference being “too obvious.”
As for when we’ll next see Downey and Law buddy up, the long-awaited Sherlock Holmes 3 is still on its way, with a release date set for December 25th, 2020, and with series regular Guy Ritchie expected to resume directing duties. In the meantime, you can catch Law in Captain Marvel, which hits theaters on March 8th, 2019, before April 26th sees the release of what may well be Downey’s MCU swan song, Avengers: Endgame.

New Captain Marvel Footage To Debut During NCAA National Championship
Having already dropped two full trailers this year that have sent the fans into a frenzy of excitement, the promotion for Captain Marvel could’ve spent these next couple of months recycling its pre-released footage for run-of-the-mill TV spots and the film would’ve still got a huge opening come March. Nonetheless, it seems that Marvel Studios is willing to show us just a little more from Carol Danvers’ solo debut, with ESPN scheduled to broadcast another preview in just over a week’s time.
The “exclusive look” is due to air on Monday, January 7th, during the College Football Playoff National Championship game. The announcement comes to us by way of a 15-second promo, in which the voice of Ben Mendelsohn can be heard posing the question, “Would you like to know what you really are?”
An exclusive look at #CaptainMarvel will air on ESPN during the College Football Playoff National Championship game on January 7 pic.twitter.com/B7PoY8JhLr
— Marvelous Realm (@MarvelousRealm) December 29, 2018
While the villainous Talos isn’t on screen when he asks this question, we can safely assume that it’s directed at Captain Marvel herself. Ever since the film’s first trailer invited us to “discover what makes a hero,” the promotion for the upcoming Brie Larson-led flick has continued to tease a secret that lies in the titular heroine’s past.
With Carol reportedly starting the movie with her superpowers already in place, Captain Marvel won’t follow the conventional origin story formula, but it’s clear that the film will be telling us a lot about her early years as the amnesia-stricken lead attempts to piece together her own backstory. In that sense, you could say that we’ll be getting to know Carol while she gets to know herself, and we’ll find out if she’s worth all the hype when the film hits theaters on March 8th, 2019.
