Trump gives TikTok a new deadline: 90 days instead of 45
President Trump issued an executive order Friday giving ByteDance 90 days to either sell or spin off its TikTok business in the US.
“There is credible evidence that leads me to believe that ByteDance ... might take action that threatens to impair the national security of the United States,” Trump wrote in the order, which references national security concerns. ByteDance is based in China, and the Trump administration has recently suggested that the company could share information about Americans with the Chinese government. The company has denied it does so.
The move gives TikTok a bit of a reprieve from Trump’s August 6th order that would have blocked all US transactions with ByteDance, TikTok’s parent corporation, due to what the...

Facebook begins merging Instagram and Messenger chats in new update
Facebook appears to flipping the switch on integrating the chat systems for Instagram and Messenger. On Friday evening, several editors at The Verge across the country — on both iOS and Android devices — noticed an update screen popped up in Instagram’s mobile app with the message “There’s a New Way to Message on Instagram” with a list of features including a “new colorful look for your chats,” more emoji reactions, swipe-to-reply, and the big one: “chat with friends who use Facebook.”
Once you hit update, the regular DM icon in the top right of Instagram is replaced by the Facebook Messenger logo. Chats on Instagram are indeed more colorful than before, with the sender’s messages shifting between blue and purple as you scroll. However,...

World War Z Star Still Holding Out Hope For A Sequel
One of the great what-ifs in the movie industry is a major studio letting David Fincher make a zombie film. It almost happened. The Social Network director was on board to helm World War Z 2 for Paramount. But the studio backed out at the last minute over budget concerns, which is understandable given the costly production of the first movie.
Mireille Enos, co-star of World War Z, doesn’t care about how much it will cost, though. She just wants to make another one, as does Brad Pitt.
“It seems to have a little curse hanging over it,” Enos told Variety. “We were all lined up to go. We had Fincher, we had a beautiful script and then it just didn’t happen.”
She isn’t wrong about a possible curse on the sequel. Paramount announced plans for a follow-up shortly after the original hit theaters in 2013. J.A. Bayona was the pick to direct with a Steven Knight script, but other commitments forced Bayona to leave the project. Cut to 2017 and the studio is swinging for the fences with Fincher. A later report said WWZ2 was set to begin filming in the summer of 2019, but by February of that year, the sequel was dead.
“It seems like such a shame for it not to be made,” Enos told Variety. “The first one was so good.”
The production of WWZ is the stuff of legend. Initially costing $125 million, the budget ballooned to between $190-$270 million thanks to extensive rewrites resulting in the entire third act needing to be reshot. What was a massive battle between humans and zombies in Russia became a more contained finale involving a small group of people at a clinic fighting off the undead while developing a cure.
The major shift in the ending caused Paramount to delay the film for six months, hence the budget. In the end, the movie was a success, grossing more than $530 million worldwide. To this day, it’s still Pitt’s biggest hit. But it didn’t make that much money, which is why the studio has been reluctant about the sequel, which would have cost upwards of $200 million.
Coming off of an Oscar win for Pitt, one could argue this would be the best time to make World War Z 2. But then again, I don’t think many people would flock to theaters to watch a movie about a global pandemic right now.

Here’s How Lady Gaga Could Look As The Batman’s Poison Ivy
Batman fans, you’ve seen some inspired casting choices over the years, as well as your fair share of dubious ones. Michael Caine as Alfred, utterly perfect. Arnold Schwarzenegger as Mr. Freeze, that was a low point. Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne, yeah, I can see where they were coming from. So, let’s give artist Carlos Gzz a moment to make his case for introducing another famous face onto the streets of Gotham, as his new fan art imagines pop superstar Lady Gaga as Poison Ivy.
We haven’t seen Ivy in a Batman movie since 1997’s thoroughly Schumachered Batman & Robin, where she was hammed up by Uma Thurman. I don’t think we’ll be seeing that kind of nadir for the character again. Does the concept of Lady Gaga as Ivy hold any water, though?
Well, prior to A Star is Born, one wouldn’t have been convinced. Casting pop stars because they’re pop stars and not because they’re actors is a staple Hollywood vanity project. How many times has Madonna tried to establish a film career? Too many. But Gaga’s performance as Ally Maine proved she has acting ability. And, as you can tell from the artwork, she clearly looks the part.
Does she have the range to take on a genre character, though? And would she even want to? I have no idea. Still, it’d have a much better shot at working out than Beyoncé Beyoncing-up The Lion King ever did.
Hope you enjoyed this speculative, purely hypothetical run-through of a fan’s Batman casting fantasy. If not, I hope it didn’t take up too much of your time. Grimace-inducing puns were pleasingly short on this one so that should be conducive to stellar audience appreciation scores (which we totally have by the way). Lady Gaga, Poison Ivy, who knows?

Behind You
There are more than a few noteworthy names to look at here. For one, viewers will get the chance to reappraise Birds of Prey, a film that didn’t find an audience when it released in the winter – or at least, not the kind of audience expected of a comic book movie. Hard to recall the last time anything from DC or Marvel came out with such little fanfare. Anyway, perhaps it’ll experience a better reception when it joins HBO Max this Saturday.
Of course, today brings with it several great titles, too. Netflix Original Project Power is generating all sorts of hype online, while D+ has finally brought Ant-Man and the Wasp over to their service, meaning they now have every single Marvel Studios movie.
Moving on to Sunday, there are two unusual bedfellows coming to Netflix – Rowan Atkinson spy comedy Johnny English, and 2012’s big screen musical Les Misérables. I wouldn’t say either are without merit, but nor are they immediate must-sees. In their defence, I will say that John Malkovich playing a pantomime villain with a pantomime French accent is pure fun, and Russell Crowe singing not just once but for an entire film’s runtime is, well, an experience.
Thinking of catching any of these new additions over the weekend? Drop a comment below if so. For me, it’s going to be Sunday on Netters with Johnny English and Les Misérables. It’ll be an interesting afternoon, that’s for sure.

Epic CEO Tim Sweeney says Apple fight is about ‘basic freedoms of all consumers and developers’
Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has issued a series of public comments on his personal Twitter account regarding the legal fight the Fortnite creator initiated with Apple yesterday, following the iPhone maker’s removal of the game from the App Store. In the four-part thread, Sweeney says the fight isn’t about money. Rather, he says Epic is fighting for “the basic freedoms of all consumers and developers.”
“At the most basic level, we’re fighting for the freedom of people who bought smartphones to install apps from sources of their choosing, the freedom for creators of apps to distribute them as they choose, and the freedom of both groups to do business directly,” Sweeney tweeted. “The primary opposing argument is: ‘Smartphone markers can do...
