Amazon is now selling Google’s Pixel 3A and 3A XL
For the first time ever, Amazon is directly selling one of Google’s Pixel phones — two of them, actually. The leading online retailer has begun offering the Pixel 3A and 3A XL at their respective $399 and $479 price points. These are “sold by Amazon.com,” not by a third-party Amazon seller, so free shipping for Prime members applies.
It doesn’t seem that Amazon is selling the regular Pixel 3 and 3 XL at this time, however. The end of Verizon’s exclusivity deal with Google led to other US carriers selling both the newer 3A handsets and the midcycle Pixel 3 devices. Maybe Amazon decided that it didn’t make much sense to offer the flagship at a point when most people who would buy it, well, probably already have.

Samsung and Huawei end years-long patent battle
Samsung and Huawei have agreed to settle a long-running legal battle that saw the two companies dueling over smartphone patents in more than 40 lawsuits, according to Nikkei, which says the settlement was reported in local Chinese media. Terms of the settlement haven’t been announced, but the companies appear to have reached a general agreement that’s supposed to move them closer to a cross-licensing deal for their patents. They’ll also be dropping all lawsuits against one another.
The settlement comes as the smartphone industry is facing a number of shifts. Phones will be moving over to 5G in the next year and on, and some smartphone manufacturers have seen declining shipments, as they struggle to sell phones to markets already...

The NYPD uses altered images in its facial recognition system, new documents show
A new report from Georgetown Law’s Center on Privacy and Technology (CPT) has uncovered widespread abuse of the New York Police Department’s facial recognition system, including image alteration and the use of non-suspect images. In one case, officers uploaded a picture of the actor Woody Harrelson, based on a witness description of a suspect who looked like Harrelson. The search produced a match, and the matched suspect was later arrested for petty larceny.
“The stakes are too high in criminal investigations to rely on unreliable—or wrong—inputs,” CPT senior associate Clare Garvie writes in the report. “Unfortunately, police departments’ reliance on questionable probe photos appears all too common.”

How to use Google Maps to save your parking location
We’ve all been there: you park your car on some random street or in a nondescript garage and go about your business. Then, an hour or two later, you find yourself wandering around without the foggiest recollection of where you left your vehicle.
Don’t let yourself get lost again. Your smartphone can help you find your parking spot — or any other location, for that matter. All you need is the mapping app you’re probably already using for navigation.
Open up Google Maps on your iOS or Android device, and get ready to find your way to smarter location saving.
On the iPhone
Saving your parking location is actually quite simple in Google Maps on iOS, though the associated options are somewhat limited compared to Android.

Amazon gives its Fire 7 tablets more storage and speed for the same price
Amazon has announced a new Fire 7 tablet that has a faster processor than the older version. It’s still a 1.3GHz quad-core CPU, though Amazon claims it has more memory bandwidth. This new tablet also has more storage by default — twice as much as before, bringing it up to 16GB. In addition, this tablet can work with 512GB microSD cards, doubling what the last-gen model could support. Everything else about it is the same; it’s even keeping the reasonable $49.99 price.
The new Fire 7 tablet will be released on June 6th, and preorders start today. It will be available in black and in three new colors: sage, plum, and twilight blue. If you purchase one before the release date, you’ll receive a $10 credit that you can redeem on the Amazon...

The Folio Society’s stunning edition of A Game of Thrones is coming in July
The Folio Society is known for putting together some stunning editions of classic works of literature, and in recent years, of some of the best-known science fiction and fantasy novels, like Ursula K. Le Guin’s Left Hand of Darkness and Neil Gaiman’s American Gods and Anansi Boys. Now, the publisher is releasing a new edition of another famous fantasy epic: George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire, with the first installment, A Game of Thrones, to be released on July 16th, 2019.
The Folio Society announced the book earlier this spring, but the exciting bit of news for bookshelf purists is that the publisher revealed that it’s going to be doing the rest of the series as well: A Clash of Kings, A Storm of Swords, A Feast for Crows, and...

Japan is running out of phone numbers, so it’s making longer ones
Japan’s communications ministry plans to create 10 billion 14-digit phone numbers in response to fears that the country’s 11-digit numbers could run out by 2022. Japan Times reports that the proposal has already been approved by the country’s three major mobile operators — NTT Docomo, KDDI, and SoftBank — and the new numbers could be introduced before the end of 2021.
The 10 billion numbers will start with “020,” the prefix that Japan currently uses for Internet of Things devices. Despite only being introduced at the beginning of 2017, 32.6 million out of the country’s 80 million “020” numbers had already been assigned as of the end of March 2019. With Japan’s 5G network due to launch in 2020, the amount of connected devices is likely...

John Wick is officially in Fortnite
One of gaming’s worst-kept secrets is finally official: you can now play as John Wick in Fortnite. Today, developer Epic announced the latest crossover event for the battle royale game, which includes a number of features based on the slick assassin just ahead of the debut of John Wick: Chapter 3 this weekend.
The crossover event is essentially split into two parts. For one, you can buy a John Wick skin and assorted gear. (It looks much more like Keanu Reeves than the previous, unofficial skin fans dubbed “John Wick.”) There’s also a new limited time mode called “Wick’s Bounty,” which also includes a number of unlockable goodies. Here’s how Epic describes it:
The High Table has opened a new contract. It’s up to you to collect the bounty....

Rage 2 is a big, dumb shooter that’s a lot of fun
Of all the blockbuster games in need of a sequel, 2011’s Rage has to be near the bottom of the list. The id-developed post-apocalyptic shooter was a stunning technical showcase, but an entirely forgettable game, set in a drab brown world that did little to distinguish itself. It’s hard to imagine many came away from the game dying to know what happened next. But alas, here we are, and Rage 2 is a video game you can play right now. It’s not an especially original one, either. It’s like a grab bag of existing open-world concepts, fused with some excellent Doom-style gunplay and a set in a slightly more colorful take on Mad Max.
That doesn’t sound like a recipe for success — and yet, strangely, Rage 2 succeeds. What it lacks in originality...

OnePlus is paying for Robert Downey Jr. ads instead of waterproof certification
Fresh off breaking box office records with Avengers: Endgame, Robert Downey Jr. has returned to his hobby of endorsing smartphones, this time agreeing a deal with OnePlus. The Chinese company tells The Verge that it intends to use the famous actor’s visage across Asia, with its home country and India being the focal points. Downey Jr. has signaled his enthusiasm with a photo on his Weibo page, featuring a sky-blue McLaren, the OnePlus 7 Pro, and a suit-plus-sneakers combo.
OnePlus has always touted its commitment to getting its users and fans the highest possible specs at the lowest conceivable price. That’s why, the company claims, it’s not wasting money on getting its phones IP certification for water resistance. And yet, with every...

Watch an autonomous drone dodge, duck, dip, dive, and dodge a football
Drones are agile things, but they’re not exactly known for their quick reactions. If you want to knock one out of the sky, a well-thrown ball or even a spear should do the trick. Not for much longer, though, as researchers from the University of Zurich have created a drone that can autonomously dodge objects thrown at it — even at close range.
You can see the quadcopter showing off these skills in the video above (though no-one tested it with a wrench). And okay, some of those throws are pretty easy, but the drone is still reacting completely autonomously. And although we’ve seen quadcopters that can maneuver around static objects like trees, avoiding moving items mid-air is much trickier.

Kevin Feige Teases The Return Of The Mandarin To The MCU
Did you really think that we’d heard the last of the Mandarin, Ben Kingsley’s not-so-villainous villain from Iron Man 3? Well, if you did, you were wrong. Kind of.
While it’s unlikely we’ll ever see Kingsley’s character again, who was simply an actor playing a part and not actually the true Mandarin, it seems that Marvel Studios still has plans to bring the real deal to the MCU. But first, let’s rewind a bit.
For those that don’t recall, the Mandarin was the supposed villain of Iron Man 3, right up until he was revealed to be nothing more than a down and out actor named Trevor Slattery. You see, Slattery was hired to play the part of a dangerous terrorist by the real baddie Aldrich Killian (Guy Pearce). And though Kingsley’s entertaining turn was one of the film’s highlights, the twist itself was pretty controversial with the fans, and understandably so.
So, it’s nice to hear that Marvel plans to bring us the real Mandarin at some point. Studio president Kevin Feige confirmed as much during a Reddit AMA this week, when someone asked him if they ever planned to follow up on the tease in the All Hail the King short, which first clued us in that the real Mandarin is indeed out there. In fact, the user asked if there were any further plans for the Mandarin or The Ten Rings, and with Feige simply replying “yes,” it’s a bit unclear if he was referring to both or just one.
Regardless, it’s exciting to hear nonetheless but as for where and when the character could appear, well, that’s tough to say. With Tony Stark now gone, Iron Man 4 obviously isn’t happening, and though it’s a shame the two of them won’t be able to face-off, there are still a number of other projects that the Mandarin would be a good fit for.
Some fans have suggested Shang-Chi, but wherever it is in the MCU that he turns up, we’re just glad to learn that Kevin Feige and co. still have plans for the popular villain.
