Fujifilm’s macOS webcam tool is out now

Photo by Dan Seifert / The Verge

Fujifilm has released its software that lets you use X-series mirrorless cameras as a webcam for your Mac. The Fujifilm X Webcam tool was initially released for Windows computers in May; Fujifilm later said a Mac version would follow in mid-July.

Fujifilm X Webcam works with the X-T200, X-A7, X-H1, X-Pro2, X-Pro3, X-T2, X-T3, and the X-T4 X-series APS-C mirrorless models, as well as all three GFX medium format cameras. One note for Mac users is that Fujifilm only lists it as working with Zoom, Teams, Skype, and Meet through Chrome or Microsoft’s new Chromium-based version of Edge, so you might not be able to use it with Safari.

The software is available to download for free from Fujifilm’s website right now.

Halloween Kills Teaser Featured An Easter Egg To The Original Halloween II

Today brought some crushing news for horror fans, as Halloween Kills was delayed by a whole year. Instead of arriving this October, we’ll instead have to wait until fall 2021 for the next rematch between Jamie Lee Curtis’ Laurie Strode and Michael Myers. To soften the blow, though, Blumhouse did release a teaser for the sequel to their 2018 reboot, which has given us a lot to chew on.

It seems likely that this clip is actually the start of the film, as it follows on directly from where we left the Strode women at the end of the last one – recuperating from their attack on the back of a truck. This is supported by the opening shot of the teaser, which appears to be a reference to the opening of the original Halloween sequel, 1981’s Halloween II.

This clip begins with a jack-o-lantern on the side of the road. It’s not an exact match, but the style of the carving is similar enough to the one featured in the opening credits of the 1981 movie that it must be a deliberate easter egg.

See for yourself with the comparison images below:

Blumhouse’s films have already continued the franchise’s tradition of beginning with pumpkins, as the 2018 flick started with a direct homage to the opening credits of the 1978 classic, except the familiar jack-o-lantern was initially rotting before it returned to life. This obviously represented the series being relaunched after years of laying dormant.

The HII references won’t stop there, either, as the behind-the-scenes reel we got during filming last year revealed that the characters will take a trip to Haddonfield Memorial Hospital, which was the main setting of the first sequel. As painful as it is to have to wait a lot longer, maybe it’s for the best that Halloween Kills has been pushed back until 2021. Now it’ll arrive on the 40th anniversary of Halloween II. That’s pretty fitting, no?

Hamilton Fans Debating What Eliza’s Gasp At The End Means

Over five years after it first premiered, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton hit Disney Plus on July 3rd and tons of fans have been reliving the epic tale of Alexander Hamilton, one of the Founding Fathers of the United States.

With Lin-Manuel’s critically acclaimed and Tony award-winning musical now on the streaming platform, though, many people who weren’t able to catch the Broadway production are finally able to see what all the fuss is about as well. And it seems that everyone has been checking it out lately, with Hamilton topping the trending chart on Disney Plus and bringing in a ton of new subscribers.

As is the case with most things that gain traction on the internet, though, Hamilton has sparked a lot of debate recently, especially regarding its portrayal of slavery. But there’s something else that folks are debating about, too, and that’s the meaning of Eliza’s gasp at the end of the play, with it unclear exactly what it’s supposed to represent. The fans certainly have their theories, though, and below, you can see just a few of them.

Hamilton

So, what does Eliza’s gasp really mean at the end of Hamilton? Well, actress Phillipa Soo spoke about it a while ago and explained it as so:

“People are like, ‘Is it Eliza going into heaven? Is she seeing Alexander? Is she seeing God? What is it?’ And it’s kind of all of those things. Sometimes, it’s literally, I look out and I see the audience, and that’s what it is, but I think, that idea of ‘transcendence’ is present in all of that. Whether it’s in Eliza’s mind, or in Phillipa’s mind, they’re both one and the same, which is beautiful about that moment.”

Of course, that’s still pretty vague and clearly, it’s going to be up to each individual audience member to make up their own mind on what exactly this hotly-debated gasp might mean and what Lin-Manuel Miranda is trying to say with it.

But tell us, do you have any interesting Hamilton theories of your own? Even if they aren’t necessarily related to this particular moment? If so, be sure to leave them via a comment in the usual place down below.

Quibi reportedly lost 90 percent of early users after their free trials expired

Illustration by Grayson Blackmon / The Verge

Streaming service Quibi only managed to convert a little under 10 percent of its early wave of users into paying subscribers, says mobile analytics firm Sensor Tower. According to the firm’s new report on Quibi’s early growth, the short-form video platform signed up about 910,000 users in its first few days back in April. Of those users, only about 72,000 stuck around after the three-month free trial, indicating the app had about an 8 percent conversion rate.

That’s not too bad. But compare that to the streaming video industry’s most successful debut of the last few years, Disney Plus, and the resulting picture is a grim one for Quibi, which has struggled both to find a hit among its mobile-centric shows and gain traction with its...

Ford employees ask the company to stop making police cars

Employees inside Ford have asked the company’s leadership to stop making and selling police vehicles, according to Jalopnik. In response, Ford CEO Jim Hackett has told employees in a letter that he doesn’t think it’s “controversial that the Ford Police Interceptor helps officers do their job” and that Ford will continue the business.

The internal discussion, which Ford confirmed to The Verge, comes as the country is gripped by national movements for racial justice and against police brutality that were sparked by the killing of George Floyd.

Ford is far and away the leading automaker in the US when it comes to making and selling specially-designed vehicles for law enforcement, making up some two-thirds of the market. While it’s not a...
